Have you ever walked into a house and instantly felt at home? Has it ever happened to you when you first sat in a car? It can, and it does. There is something familiar, like a comfortable seat or the way the steering wheel feels in your hands. Something that moves you, that you are immediately receptive to, and that doesn’t feel foreign. For me, that is what driving a Volkswagen car is like, and of all the models I’ve driven, the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas is the most welcoming.

Soothing Vibes Inside and Out

For a few years, it seemed like gray and monotone interiors were all the rage for homes and cars. But we’ve matured past that, and we’re all looking for warmth. Volkswagen’s soft ivory interior, trimmed with warm woods and a little chrome, reminds me of the soft, relaxing vibes I feel when I walk into a spa. All I’m missing is that amazing scent of essential oils. And heck, with a car diffuser like this one, I could probably have that too!

And it’s not just the finishes that make me feel relaxed; it’s the attention to detail and the placement of everything from the buttons on the steering wheel to just the right amount of tactile buttons and knobs on the dash. The 2024 Volkswagen Atlas is not cluttered. But it’s not cold, minimalistic, or sci-fi futuristic, either.

Sophisticated and Capable

The Volkswagen Atlas is refreshing on the outside, too. I like the departure from the mom-car look, with a higher stance and more SUV than crossover shape. Depending on the color and trim level, the Atlas can look sophisticated urban, ready for a night on the town, or off-road ready and equipped for camping or kayaking. Example? Roof rails are standard on every model.

I have yet to see the Atlas Peak Edition in person, but I think I’d really like the more rugged front-facia and knowing it has underbody cladding to protect the car when I’m driving out here in the country. I think this car’s versatility is what draws me to it.

The model we drove had a gorgeous panoramic sunroof, easy-open tailgate, all-season tires, and a beautiful Platinum Gray paint job that I loved.

Practically Speaking, the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas has it All

The Atlas has a third row with impressive legroom, which makes it a great choice for families, but that’s not all there is to love. Behind that third row is a large cargo space, and roof rails offer the ability to have a cargo carrier on top as well. This makes the Atlas one of our top choices when it comes to a good travel vehicle for our crew.

The turbocharged 2.0 engine produces 269 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque for a punchy drive and plenty of strength – the Atlas has a 5,000 lb. towing capacity! With this kind of muscle, you can tow a small camper, boat, or utility vehicle on a small trailer.

Let’s Break it Down

The starting price for the Volkswagen Atlas SE is $37,995. This is the base model and the model we drove. There are five other models to choose from, and the starting prices are as follows:

The SE with Technology starts at $42,100. This car looks just like the Atlas we drove but comes with some extras, like larger wheels, a hands-free liftgate, sun shades, two extra USB ports (for a total of 6), and a 115v power outlet.

The Peak Edition SE with Technology has all of that, plus unique bumper and grille, panoramic moonroof, multi-color adjustable ambient lighting, and nicer leatherette seats. This starts at $46,990.

Then you have the SEL, which starts at $48,880 and offers real leather seats, an 8-way power driver’s seat and a power passenger seat, a heads-up display, a 12” multimedia screen, and adaptive cruise control. On top of the SEL trim, you can add the Peak Edition package (starting price $50,870) and then finally the Premium R-Line, which starts at $52,890 and gives you even more extras like 21” wheels, R-line exterior styling, premium leather seats, Harmon Kardon audio, overhead camera view, heated first and second-row seats, and stainless steal pedal caps.

Who Is the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas For?

I really enjoyed my time with the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas SE. I think family roadtrippers and people who want or need lots of space will enjoy this SUV. Those who appreciate the most modern technology will be pleased with the high-resolution screens and many other features. And let’s not forget the rest of us who feel right at home in the inviting interior. The warm welcome this SUV offers isn’t just for me; it’s for everyone.

The 2025 Mini JCW Countryman: Bigger, Bolder, and Built for Family Adventures https://agirlsguidetocars.com/2025-mini-jcw-countryman-built-for-family/ Thu, 25 Apr 2024 11:00:00 +0000 https://agirlsguidetocars.com/?p=633323 This is the Mini-est Fun You Can Have in a Compact SUV

For 2025, the Mini JCW Countryman gets a major upgrade, transforming it into the ultimate family adventure machine. It’s got the all-wheel-drive power you need for road trips, room for the whole crew (and all their gear), and, of course, that classic Mini fun factor turned up a notch. And this beloved compact SUV has a whopping 25% more space than its predecessor, starting at $38,900 and stuffing 312 horsepower into this new but fondly familiar package.

Family Feedback Fueled the Redesign

Mini didn’t just make these changes on a whim. They listened to their biggest Countryman fans – families. The feedback was clear: they love the car but needed more cargo space. So, for 2025, the Countryman gets a bit taller and longer, finally solving that trunk-size dilemma. Even Mini’s design team is celebrating, especially the lead designer, Oliver Heilmer, who can now comfortably squeeze his three kids, a dog, and a week’s worth of luggage inside. Speaking of which, A Girl’s Guide to Cars founder, Scotty Reiss, got a personal tour of the 2025 Mini JCW Countryman with Oliver. You can catch the whole conversation here.

Infused with Racing Legacy

This particular Countryman is the JCW (John Cooper Works) model, infused with the automaker’s rich racing legacy. The JCW logo is a badge of honor, and the design reflects that. It’s solid, powerful, undeniably Mini, and perfect for precious cargo.

Minis are known for their roofs, and the JCW Countryman is no exception. Its “surfboard” roof is pure style but also serves a purpose—making your Countryman instantly recognizable, even from a distance. In fact, many of the design accents aim to simplify and show features from afar, like the side scuttles that were previously placed along the body, which are now raised up top so anyone can look at them and see exactly what trim this vehicle is.

The 2025 Mini JCW Countryman is Bold but Simple

For the 2025 Mini JCW Countryman, the designers simplified the rear with a single surface bumper, a subtle logo, and Countryman text. Taller, vertical, matrix tail lights catch the eye and can be customized to any of 3 different options:

  • Classic: full circle and Union Jack-inspired taillight
  • Favoured: arch style with a block design taillight
  • JCW: horizontal bars with a minimalistic taillight

Details That Delight, Inside and Out

Hopping inside, you are immediately greeted with an incredibly simplistic yet warm and welcoming interior. A long, flat dash is broken only by the simplified round screen that harkens to the Mini’s origins.

The Mini’s original designer, Sir Alec Issigonis, said his goal was to really focus on what was necessary and to have no waste, so the design team decided to push a reset button and do just that—a task made so much easier by the incredible technology that can elevate simplicity.

Though the dash is clean, a head-up display puts pertinent info right in the driver’s gaze. Though the Mini Interaction Unit appears to be a simplistic circle, it’s jam-packed with functionality and fun and even comes with Spike, Mini’s Intelligent Personal Assistant. Love a little whimsy? Press and hold the navigation arrow on the map to turn it into a mini-car. Passengers stay safe, too, thanks to the display showing who’s buckled up.

Not Your Normal Knitting in the Mini JCW Countryman

The rest of the cabin in the 2025 Mini JCW Countryman is coated with custom textiles for a truly elevated finish. Dual-layer knitted surfaces were an intentional choice to create texture, depth, and a beautiful two-tone effect. In between the knit, vegan leather stretches luxuriously over curves. Subtle red accents trick the eye into thinking that they’re one tone, but they’re actually two and delight in various embellishments like a fabric strap from the center to the base of the steering wheel, adding a tiny pop of color.

The carmaker plans to make features like that strap customizable so you can show off your own color scheme.

Nestled neatly in the center of the middle console, a completely unexpected and magical surprise awaits. A knit fabric encased jewelry box that is easily opened by an orange/red textured loop. Loops like this are such great features since they’re a more considered and accessible way to open something, even for individuals with dexterity challenges. It’s something you may more expect in a home, not a car, which is part of their goal, to make you feel at home. You can even detach your plush little jewelry box and place it in your home instead.

Which Toyota SUV is the Right One For You? https://agirlsguidetocars.com/which-toyota-suv-is-the-right-one-for-you/ Sun, 21 Apr 2024 16:59:59 +0000 https://agirlsguidetocars.com/?p=633524 When Reliable, Stylish, Rugged and Comfy Is a Must-Have

With the introduction of the 2025 Toyota 4Runner, Toyota has (probably) completed its robust lineup of SUVs. And increasingly, these SUVs are hybrid or have a hybrid option.

There are a lot of choices, so no matter what you need—seating for 7, all wheel drive, 4 wheel drive, room for lots of gear or a fuel-efficient SUV, Toyota offers an option.

Here’s how Toyota’s SUVs break down and what you need to know about each, from  passenger capacity to how well kids car seats will fit, cargo space, fuel efficiency and how well each fares in challenging weather and terrain—plus a link to our coverage and a look at its competitors.

Toyota SUVs that are Adventure-Focused and Off-Road Worthy

These SUVs are designed for off-roading and while they have a hybrid or offer one, here, hybrid is more about power than fuel efficiency: the battery-electric system adds to the overall HP and boosts fuel economy a bit, but not to the level we might expect from a hybrid.

2024 Toyota Land Cruiser

This is the newest in the Toyota family and it’s starting to roll out to dealerships this Spring. Priced from $55k-$75K, this is a full-fledged off-roading SUV with all the capabilities of top 4-wheelers. The Toyota Land Cruiser has evolved to the 4-wheeling elite world from a 3-row family SUV, which it was previously known for; it no longer has a 3rd row option (and even if it did, it would be tight, as this is a smaller SUV than it’s predecessor).

It’s good for small families, even those with kids in car seats; it’ll fit one or possibly two rear-facing car seats, and forward facing seats or boosters will easily fit. Three slim child car seats will fit across the rear bench seat.

The Land Cruiser comes in 3 flavors: 1958 (base model), Land Cruiser (the middle of the line) and First Edition and each has the same engine, a 4-cylinder i-Force Max hybrid engine that generates 326 HP—and keep in mind that this hybrid is designed for power more than MPG; it is estimated to get about 23MPG.

Land Cruiser’s new look harkens to the brand’s heritage with an iconic 1950’s-style logo and a crisp, boxy shape. This will no doubt appeal to adventurers looking for the ultimate hill and dale climber.

2025 Toyota 4Runner

She’s back and she’s awesome. We can’t be more excited to see one of the most popular off-roaders finally—finally!—get a makeover. The Toyota 4Runner is designed for trail riding and hill climbing, and its model lineup, which includes two new models and new engines, reflect that.

In addition to the SR5, Limited and TRD Pro models, Toyota has added a Platinum top of the line model, a Trailhunter edition for off-road trail riding and expanded the TRD line to include TRD Sport, TRD Sport Premium, TRD Off Road and TRD Off-Road Premium. Each has a 4-cylinder turbo that generates 278 HP or the option of the i-Force Max hybrid engine that generates 326 HP.

This 5 passenger SUV has a 3rd row option in the SR5 and the Limited gas-powered models, but it’s not offered in any of the other models. This would not be our first choice for kids car seats, as the rear seat is the smallest of Toyota’s SUVs and installing a rear-facing child car seat may not be possible to do safely.

Inside, buyers will find a fresh but rugged interior with many details carried over from the Toyota Tacoma, including the center console, grab bars and multimedia system. That’s not a bad thing at all; the 4Runner still feels modern and adventure-ready.

See our full Toyota 4Runner story here. Shopping the whole category? Look at the Jeep Wrangler, Subaru Outback, Ford Bronco, Honda Passport.

2023 Toyota Sequoia

2024 Toyota Sequoia

We were thrilled that the first off-road capable Toyota SUV to be redesigned was the Toyota Sequoia, which made its debut in 2022 just after the introduction of its fraternal twin sister, the Toyota Tundra pickup truck.

The Sequoia, priced from about $61K-$81K, is lovable for all the space and capability it offers: it has seating for up to 8, it can tow up to 9,520 lbs. and it has a full-fledged 4WD system for true off-roading, which is enhanced in the TRD Pro version. The redesign gave it a fresh, modern interior with Toyota’s revamped multimedia system and even more passenger comforts such as “hey Toyota” voice activation and a panoramic sunroof.

The Sequoia carries Toyota’s i-Force Max V6 turbo hybrid engine which generates 437 HP and gets about 22 MPG. Most models come standard with rear wheel drive and can be upgraded to 4WD for about $3,000.

While the Toyota Sequoia has 3 rows standard and plenty of interior space, configuring kids car seats can be a challenge. First, center row seats are the tumble forward type, so to access the 3rd row a child car seat can’t be installed in that seat. Then, there are only two full LATCH sets in the center row and none in the 3rd row, which only has one upper tether in the center seat.

Captains chairs, which create a pass-through for 3rd row access, are an option but not in the lower trim models. However, rear facing car seats should fit and this wide SUV should easily accommodate 3 seats across the center bench (but again, slender seats are best for this).

These Toyota SUVs are Comfortable, Capable, and Seat 7 or 8

Toyota has long offered the only family-focused SUV with stellar MPG — the Highlander Hybrid which gets about 35 MPG. For 2024 Toyota took it a step further with the larger and more capable Grand Highlander, offering buyers a better and best option in a family car.

The new face of the 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander

Toyota Grand Highlander

If you’d asked me us Toyota needed to add a new SUV to its lineup we’d have said no. The brand produces so many great SUVs. But once we experienced the Grand Highlander, we were convinced. This was what was missing in the Toyota family and what so many families would be glad to have in their driveway.

The Grand Highlander, priced from $43K-$58K, offers some fantastic basics, such as a spacious cabin for 7 or 8 passengers, slide and tilt center row seats and great capacity for kids car seats. They’ll all fit, even rear facing seats.

Toyota also offers some nice options in the Grand Highlander. To keep prices approachable, it offers a 4-cylinder turbo gas-powered engine that generates 265 HP, for buyers who want true hybrid efficiency there is a 4-cylinder hybrid that puts out 245HP and for those who want power, there is an i-Force Max hybrid that produces 362 HP. All models are available in all wheel drive with multiple drive modes including sport, eco, normal and snow; AWD models add sand/mud/rock drive modes, too.

Grand Highlander’s interior options span from the basics and to opulence, with leather seating, a panoramic sun roof and more. But the seating space is primo: The 3rd row, which has 3 seats, is big enough for adults or for maneuvering to install kids car seats. And it has features such as air vents, cup holders and USB ports so everyone will be happy back there.

The one to buy? The mid-trim XLE Hybrid model is our pick for fuel efficiency — about 35 MPG— leatherette seating and a nice mix of luxuries and conveniences, all at about $45K. It’s hard to beat.

2023 Toyota Highlander AWD Review
2023 Toyota Highlander AWD. Photo: Erica Mueller

Toyota Highlander

This SUV is the OG Toyota family SUV, especially for its 4-cylinder hybrid powertrain which gets 35 MPG, generates 243 HP and is available in all models. The Highlander, priced from $39K, is offered in front or all wheel drive with multi-terrain drive modes, has two engine options (the non-hybrid is a 4-cylinder hybrid that generates 265HP and gets 25 MPG) and seats 5, 7 or 8 passengers.

We love this mid-size SUV for its flexibility; it’s great for 4 or 5 passengers on the daily, and with the 3rd row down has a great cargo space. But the 3rd row, which seats 3, is there when you need it, so you can go to dinner in one car when family visits or bring an extra friend or two to the movies.

Kids car seats fit nicely, though there are only two full sets of LATCHes in the center row and none in the 3rd row, which has one upper tether in the middle seat. Most models feature center row captains chairs for easy 3rd row access, but those who want a center row bench will find it in the entry level LE and XLE models. This is not an overly large SUV, but the center bench should still be able to accommodate 3 slim child car seats.

Then, the Highlander is filled with all the spoilers: Toyota has updated the 2024 model with its new multimedia system—an option in most trims and standard on top Limited and Platinum trims—which as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and “Hey Toyota” voice assistance. Buyers can outfit it with other details too: leatherette or leather upholstery, head up display, premium JBL sound and more.

Popular 5-Passenger Toyota SUVs

Toyota’s smaller SUVs, which range from basic to luxe, from front wheel drive to off-road capable, are a very popular option for many buyers and Toyota has taken the hint. There are now SUV versions of popular sedans and more versions of popular SUVs.

I still miss my Toyota RAV4 Photo Erica Mueller
I still miss my Toyota RAV4. Photo: Erica Mueller

Toyota RAV4

This is the most popular girl in Toyotaland and for good reason: She’s good at everything she does and is a total people pleaser. The RAV4, priced from about $28K to about $47K, has seating for 5 and offers 3 engine options: A gas-powered 4-cylinder that generates 203 HP and gets 30 MPG; a 4-cylinder Prime hybrid that puts out 219 HP and that gets 37MPG and a plug-in hybrid with an all electric range of 42 miles, 302 HP and hybrid fuel economy of 38 MPG.

And then, there are a wide variety of trim options from simple to sporty: entry-level LE, XLE, Premium, Adventure, TRD Off-Road, Limited and Woodland Edition (the RAV4 Prime plug-in is only available in SE and XSE trims). Most trims offer the choice of front wheel drive or AWD, and sport, normal and eco drive modes for all; AWD models have multi-terrain select drive modes for off-roading or trail driving.

The RAV4 got a nice makeover in 2019 which was just before the introduction of much of the brand’s new in-car tech. However, Toyota has updated the RAV4 with the new multimedia system, including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, features like wireless charging, and of course, voice activation.

The RAV4 is perfect for small families, even those who need rear facing child car seats. With up to 37” of rear seat legroom, a seat should easily fit behind the passenger’s seat and and possibly behind the driver. Keep in mind that the rear seats are fixed and do not move forward and back, so its up to front seat passengers to ensure there’s enough space for car seats to fit. The RAV4 has two full sets of LATCHes for installing car seats.

For many buyers, the magic of the RAV4 is its versatility for adventure. Its AWD system takes its inspiration from Toyota’s TRD racing division, which is where the other SUVs an pickups in the family get their capability. While the RAV4 probably isn’t the one you’d take to climb rocks on the Rubicon Trail, it’s completely capable for most trails and many challenges.

2025 Crown Signia

A brand new crossover SUV model from Toyota, the Crown Signia plays to Toyota fans who love the conveniences and reliability of the brand but want more space and luxury. Taking a cue from its sibling the Crown sedan, Toyota incorporated many of its features in order to offer an SUV version of the sedan.

The introduction of the Crown Signia, though, means that we’re seeing the Venza crossover disappear. While we loved the elegance and style of the Venza, the Crown Signia is promising; it carries a lot of those features over.

The result is a compact crossover with a lot of beautiful and luxe features in one beautiful package: a 4-cylinder hybrid engine that delivers 243 HP and is estimated to get 36 MPG, Toyota’s 12” multimedia system and options like leather seating and a panoramic sunroof.

The Crown Signia will be available in two versions: XLE and Limited. It will make its debut—and be available for us to test drive—soon. Pricing also hasn’t been announced, but taking a cue from the Crown, which is priced from $41K -$53K, it will likely be priced in the the low $40k-$50K range.

2024 Corolla Cross

This might be the sassiest in the lineup: The Corolla Cross wins huge kudos for taking the ease of ownership and driving that the Corolla offers into the crossover space. There are two engine options to choose from: The gas-powered 4-cylinder that generates 169 HP and gets 33MPG, and a 4-cylinder hybrid that generates 196 HP and gets about 45 MPG. Priced from $23K- $31K, there are 7 models to choose from, 4 of them with the hybrid engine and all of them with AWD, which is standard.

A compact SUV, the Corolla Cross will best fit forward facing child car seats and is equipped with two full sets of child car seat LATCHes. rear facing seats might fit with front seats pushed forward quite a bit—the rear seat isn’t huge. But there are air vents for rear seat passengers, which puts this in the ‘possibility’ category for buyers who need a small SUV and have kids or dogs.

We loved the drive experience of the Corolla Cross Hybrid; the added HP simply gives you much more confidence on the road. And, the multimedia system, the smart cabin layout and conveniences make this a winner, especially at this price point.

A Stellar Toyota SUV Lineup Offers Lots to Ponder

While ‘something for everyone’ is cliché, here, it’s simply true, from price to capability to seating capacity.

Add the fact that Toyota has updated its multimedia tech in every model, includes Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 driver assist and safety features standard, and each model has good-to-great fuel economy, and it can be a matter of simply finding the model that is the best fit for you. I’ve owned a Toyota for years and get it: There’s nothing like the confidence of power, reliability and interior conveniences to make a car feel like part of the family. Perhaps the only inconvenience is deciding which one to pick.

2024 Hyundai Santa Fe First Drive: The Best Things Come in Large, Classically Shaped Boxes https://agirlsguidetocars.com/2024-hyundai-santa-fe-first-drive/ Tue, 19 Mar 2024 13:00:09 +0000 https://agirlsguidetocars.com/?p=632749 More Space, Function, Convenience and Capability in this Completely Re-tooled SUV

When it was time to redesign the Hyundai Santa Fe, the company first did some deep listening: What did customers really want? What features do they use the most? How do they live in their SUVs? And I have this to say:  Thank you for asking—seriously.

So many SUVs are designed based on research—focusing on features that customers want and need, but it’s actually less common for automakers to study how we use those features.

After conducting extensive customer research and asking a lot of questions, Hyundai even built scale models of the Santa Fe in various lifestyle modes—school runs, tailgate picnics, shopping, the places we go. Then, they considered all the stuff we put in our cars, how SUVs are used and even what trash accumulates in them to find better ways to keep our cars clean.

But the biggest thing that Hyundai’s designers considered is what we want in an SUV: something large, roomy and classically designed. An SUV that looks like an SUV rather than a beefed-up hatchback (not that there’s anything wrong with that).

Taking a cue from some popular boxy SUVs, including recent designs of the Land Rover Defender and the Kia Telluride, the 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe, priced from $34K to about $47K, delivers interior function, a reasonably sized and comfortable 3rd row. Then, it offers off-road capability and two engine options so you can pick your power and efficiency, in a larger, roomier, more classic-looking SUV that is a huge departure—and to many a surprise—from the prior model year. There is almost no resemblance.

This one stunned me. I was sure the 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe was gobs bigger in length and height. But, nope. The 2024 Santa Fe is only about 2” longer than the prior design, about 2.5” taller, and has an 4 additional cubic feet.

What is different is how the interior space is configured, with flexible seating and lots of storage spaces, a cleverly versatile center console, a wider and taller rear cargo area and the fact that the 3rd row is roomy and now, standard.

Organization Fans, Rejoice

One of the biggest frustrations we have with our cars is keeping everything organized. Said by a mom who never, ever had a handbag that didn’t have at least a few muddy footprints on it after it fell on the floor and *other people* thought it was fine to step all over it.

All I needed was a good handbag hook and I’d be set. Well, the Hyundai Santa Fe has a good handbag hook. 4, in fact. On the backs of the front seats; they are brilliant for hanging grocery bags, trash bags, backpacks or even a jacket or two.

Then, it has a cleverly inventive center console designed to store all sorts of stuff, even trash. The arm rest console opens both to the front and back, so anyone in either seat can reach what’s inside. Under the console there’s a drawer that pulls out for rear seat passengers to stow things. You could easily stow a garbage bag here for passengers to use.

For front seat passengers, the center console has two cup holders and a dual phone pad with a wireless phone charger; the top of the line Calligraphy edition has two phone chargers.

And underneath the center console? MORE storage. Enough for a small handbag, a tablet or other items.

Great Tech, and Finally, Wireless Apple CarPlay

Hyundai fans know this: The company is very tech-forward, often the first to offer new technology and things like digital phone-as-key, Bluelink connected car services and a solid suite of driver assist features.

The 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe takes that whole idea further. Hyundai has finally made Apple CarPlay and Android Auto wireless and it’s standard in all models. There are some nice phone cubbies in the front center console and in some trims those are either one or both of those is a wireless phone charger.

Then, in the top trims customers can opt in for Hyundai Pay, which allows you to create an account and seamlessly pay for parking and gas, and soon, other things too.

And, Santa Fe buyers will get bio metric start and drive — once you’ve set up your system you can tap the biometric button and it’ll recognize your fingerprint so you can start the car and drive it; just lock and unlock with your phone and you never need your key. How great is that???

Rear passenger amenities include air vents, fan speed control, two USB-C ports and household outlet

2nd and 3rd Rows Are Equipped With All the Comforts

Center row passengers have a lot of places to put things: the pull out drawer, the bag hooks, dual cup holders (square ones that will also hold a phone!) and a bottle pocket in the door panels, and map pockets and USB ports on the backs of the front seats.

Center seat passengers also have air vents on the pillars between the front and rear doors (but not control over fan speed or temperature), which is a nice detail. And, in the Calligraphy edition, the center row captains chairs are heated and there are window shades for the rear door windows. These are great for dogs; raise the shade and lower the window for lots of air on the face without risking a head sticking out the window.

Third row passengers have dual cupholders, USB ports and air vents (in all but the base model) and fan speed control in the two top models.

Cargo space behind the 3rd row in the 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe

Cargo Options Are Impressive for a Mid-Size SUV

The cargo area is nice and wide. Hyundai designed the rear tail lights to span the lower bumper so they could expand the width of the cargo area. There result of this change, plus the taller height and added length is about 4 more cubic feet of space.

The space behind the third row is shallow but wide; enough for a foldable stroller or an array of backpacks but not a lot. To fit significant luggage you’ll need to put down one or both 3rd row seats, or add a roof rack. This is a mid-size SUV after all.

Passenger Space is the Priority In this SUV

What the Santa Fe doesn’t offer in cargo space it makes up for in passenger space. There is plenty.

The second row has a bench seat — the top of the line Calligraphy is the only one with captains chairs — that moves forward for more legroom in the 3rd row or back for more center legroom. The seats also recline, slide and tilt for 3rd row access and fold flat for additional cargo space.

The 3rd row has plenty of leg room — good behind the center seat when pushed fully back and great when it’s positioned at the middle of its range — but the seat sits pretty close to the floor so I found my knees were elevated. Because of this the seat is probably better for shorter passengers who will be able to stretch out a bit more.

I sat in the 3rd row and found that when I pulled the center seat back into place and let it settle in the middle position, so not fully pushed back, I had plenty of legroom and I’m 5’8”. I also had plenty of head room and loved all the features — air vents, USB ports, the large square rear windows and cupholders that I could put my phone in.

One caveat about the center row captains chairs: they have a power fold function (though the slide function is a mechanical release). I found that when I pushed the power button on the seat shoulder, the seat powered forward with a good amount of force but it did stop when I pushed back against the seat back. In most cars this feature is disabled when there is weight in the seat, such as a passenger or a kids car seat. That is not the case in the Hyundai Santa Fe, at least at this writing.

Access to the 3rd row is pretty good

How Do Kids Car Seats Fit in the 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe?

This is pretty good news: Lots of legroom and four full LATCH sets means lots of ways to configure car seats.

Rear facing car seats should be able to fit comfortably in the center row, even though this is a mid-size SUV (Hyundai actually calls it ‘compact’), behind the driver or the passenger without compromising front seat occupants. Hyundai says the center row has 42” of legroom, and that’s more than enough for rear facing car seats (in most cases).

And while you might be able to fit three across if your car seats are are on the slender side, the middle bench seat is very slim and seat belts may be hard to reach for that occupant. I didn’t test drive a model with a center row bench seat, but The Car Mom did and you can see how she installed her seats here.

To access the 3rd row, seats slide and tilt; in our Calligraphy edition test model, these have a mechanical slide and power tilt; the bench models have a tab on the seat shoulder to slide and tilt the seats.

It may be difficult to access the 3rd row with a car seat installed; even with the seats fully pushed forward, the access space is not huge. However, if the outboard seat is empty or you can move a car seat (or booster), accessing the 3rd row is pretty easy. I found it easy enough to climb into the 3rd row and it’ll be even easier for someone who is, uh, not old enough to vote.

Power, Engine Options and Key Details

The 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe has two engine options: the standard 4-cylinder turbo and a hybrid.

The turbo generates 277 HP, which in my opinion, is about the minimum you’ll want and need if you have people in all 3 seats. If you have a light load and do a lot of around-town driving, the hybrid, which generates 231 HP could be a worthwhile upgrade; it’s only a $500 more than the standard engine. The hybrid is only available on the SEL, Limited and Calligraphy models. The base model and the XRT off road model only have the gas turbo engine option.

Driving the Hyundai Santa Fe — We Even Went Off Road!

Tooling around the backroads of Tennessee was fun and comfortable. We had easy conversation between the front and rear seats and despite the hills and curves, everyone felt comfortable and no one got car sick. The ride height of about 7” and all the windows have a lot to do with that, as does the comfortable suspension.

The Santa Fe offers several drive modes; mostly we drove in comfort, the best setting for our drive. But later I shifted into sport mode and can’t say it was dramatically different, though I didn’t have enough time with it to really say.

What I can say is that it was surprisingly comfortable and confident on the off-road course. We took the XRT out on a trail and kept speeds of about 25 MPH before putting hitting the challenges of hills and turns. In downhill descent mode, the Santa Fe regulated its speed comfortably. The car’s all wheel drive was capable even on the steep, gravelly hills, and with the addition of 4 wheel lock, the most challenging trails we drove were not an issue; it ambled right over them.

The XRT comes standard with AWD which is an option on all the other trims for an additional $1,800.

What You Get For the Money

Yes, the 2024 Santa Fe is a big departure in style and features, and it got a bit of a price hike, too: The Calligraphy edition is $3,900 more and the entry level SE is $5,200 more. Though there are more features and premium details at every level. Here’s how each of the 5 trim levels break down:

  • The entry level SE edition includes a 2.5L 4 cylinder turbo engine that generates 277 HP and gets 24 MPG. Standard features include the wide curved glass touchscreen with a  4.2” driver display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, leather wrapped steering wheel, handsfree lift gate, cloth seats, second row bench seat with power fold, standard 3rd row (total seating for 7) 4 USB ports, Sirius XM, 3,500 lbs. tow capacity, 18” wheels, Bluelink connected car service and driver assist and safety features including forward collision avoidance, rear cross traffic assist, blind spot monitor, rear occupant alert, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane keep assist, safe exit assist, lane follow assist; pricing starts at $33,950
  • SEL edition adds puddle lamps, roof rails, 3rd row air vents, digital key, heated power front seats, leatherette seating, wireless phone charge pad, advanced rear occupant alert and starts at $36,450
  • The XRT edition adds Hyundai Pay, a conventional sun roof, an assist handle on the exterior pillar, navigation, adaptive cruise control with navigation-based guidance and curve control, a household outlet, additional 1” ground clearance and 4,500 lbs. of tow capacity; pricing starts at $40,600
  • The Limited edition includes 20” wheels, leather seating, power lumbar support, heated and vented front seats, front seat memory function, heated rear seats, Bose premium sound, two 3rd row USB ports, surround view monitor and blind spot monitor, heated steering wheel, 12” driver display, rear sunshades, dual pane sunroof, UV sanitizer box, surround view monitor, and remote park assist; pricing starts at $43,350
  • The Calligraphy edition includes 21” wheels, assist handle on the exterior pillar, center row captains chairs, Nappa leather seating, microsuede ceiling headliner, head up display, dual wireless charge pad and digital rear view mirror; pricing starts at $46,500

The price of our test model with AWD, white pearl paint ($470) floor mats ($210) and destination fee ($1,395): $50,375.

In all, the 2024 Hyundai is both a huge surprise, and then, not a surprise at all. Hyundai did everything they should have with the framework of the Santa Fe, creating an SUV with classic proportions and design that will serve it, and its owners, well.

The 2025 Lincoln Aviator: More Luxury for the Money https://agirlsguidetocars.com/2025-lincoln-aviator/ Mon, 05 Feb 2024 11:00:29 +0000 https://agirlsguidetocars.com/?p=632040 All the Luxuries You Love? Now They’re (Mostly) Standard

There are certain cars in our lives we’ll never forget. The one that I drove to bury my mom, the Lincoln Aviator, resonates especially in my mind, and in my heart.

Not because my vision was blurry from the tears and grief, and the car’s safety systems let me know if I veered too close to the center line.

Or because I had enough seats for my family and room for flower arrangements and other assorted necessities in the cargo space.

I could have simply been grateful for all wheel drive when we walked out of the funeral home to discover a snowfall — no doubt, my mom having a last laugh; she hated show — that would make the streets slick.

But, it was the comfortable haven of the Lincoln Aviator that made a tough time less difficult.

The front cabin of the 2025 Lincoln Aviator

We Loved Original Aviator; Would This One Disappoint?

That was 2020, a year most of us will never forget, for all the reasons. Thinking back just a few months earlier, in late 2019, the glory of seeing and driving the Aviator for the first time was still fresh: the luscious leather interior, the fantastic sound system, the clever interior design and innovative technology. We’d never seen anything like it and over the coming years, would see many of the Aviator’s features “inspired” in its competitors.

So as I headed to Detroit for a sneak peek the 2025 model, I had to wonder, with a little fear, what would be different? Would I have to adjust to new features and design? Would the Aviator’s strong stature be softened (which would make me sad; I really love its looks)?

The good news is, all the things we love have been preserved. Mostly the update extends to technology, a few interior details that could stand to be modified, and a simplified new lineup with more standard features that add more luxury to the Aviator at the base price.

The Aviator’s technology and how each edition is packaged is the biggest news for 2025.

The new front grille of the 2025 Lincoln Aviator

Subtle New Details Define the 2025 Aviator

On the exterior, the front grille has been updated from the first model; it’s larger and has slim new headlights that are framed by daytime running lights. The new grille offsets the Lincoln badge in what may be its most demure look yet; back in the pre-Aviator day, the Lincoln logo was so large it almost dominated the front of all its cars and SUVs. Now, the logo is more like an anchor point that brings all the elements together.

Another notable design change is that the start button has moved; in prior models, the start button was behind the steering wheel on the dash, next to the multimedia touch screen. Now, it’s part of the “piano key” panel, where you’ll also find the park, drive, and reverse buttons. It’s a nice change.

Which leads to the most notable design: the new, large multimedia screen. By moving the start button, Lincoln was able to expand the size of the screen to incorporate new technology — which is actually the biggest change: it now has a 13” center screen with lots of new functions.

The multimedia touch screen grew to 13"

“Hey Google” Adds a True Luxury Touch

The new multimedia screen incorporates the Google operating system, which Ford and Lincoln are moving to. Don’t be put off by this; Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are still part of the package. Additionally, Lincoln has added video games to the selections, as well as a suite of apps, though the car has to be in park in order to use the video games.

The Google system allows you to select your destination and see turn-by-turn directions in the head-up display, which is also now larger and features more information.

And, you can see it all on the driver display screen, which has also been updated.

The panoramic sunroof is now standard in the 2025 Lincoln Aviator

A Simplified Lineup, But One of Our Favorite Features is No More

Lincoln added more standard features but reduced the number of trims in the Aviator family. This means that every model comes with a V6 400 HP engine, but the hybrid is no longer an option; it’s been phased out (if you really want the hybrid, you may find a 2024 model on a dealer’s lot right now, though).

I have mixed feelings about the hybrid: A plug-in hybrid electric with about 21 miles of all-electric driving range, really, it was designed as a power boost with an additional 94 HP for a phenomenal power experience for those who really want it. But in a 6 or 7-passenger SUV? See the conundrum? Not many customers really wanted (or needed) that amount of power which, in the wrong hands, could toss rear seat passengers to car sickness in minutes flat.

The start button is now part of the gear selector panel

The New Lineup is Simplified With Lots of Great Standard Features

For 2025 all models also come with an upgraded list of standard features. These include:

  • The new multimedia system with Google operating system
  • Blue Cruise hands-free highway driving (complimentary for 4 years, subscription after that)
  • Lincoln Co-Pilot 360 driver assist and safety features
  • 360-degree surround view camera
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Heated and vented front seats
  • Wireless phone charging
  • Digital key (phone as key)
  • Adaptive suspension
  • Trailer tow package with up to 5,000 lbs. towing

And then, the lineup: The three editions are Premium, Reserve and Black Label.

Both Premium and Reserve are rear-wheel drive, but all-wheel drive is available for about $2,000. Black Label comes with AWD standard. All are available in Jet, which adds a black grille and gloss black details, including the roof rails, side mirror caps, and wheels. It’s particularly sharp against the white pearl color we saw. It looks so chic.

Buyers can add packages such as Co-Pilot 360 Plus with road sign recognition, more sensors, and features; there’s also a lighting package, massaging front seats, an enhanced suspension, more luxuries for rear seat passengers, captain chairs, and, of course, upgraded leather.

Me in the 3rd row of the 2025 Lincoln Aviator

Are There Changes to the Rear Seats?

Not really, which is good news: Captain chairs are an option, and Lincoln offers two center-row consoles to go between them: One larger one that has illuminated cupholders and storage or a smaller one that is easy to step over, making the pass-through more accessible for 3rd-row passengers.

The 3rd row is on the small side, better suited for smaller people, though I fit just fine with the center row seat pushed forward slightly (I’m 5’8”).

For families who need space for 2 rear-facing kids’ car seats, the center-row bench is the way to go. With seats pushed all the way back, you should be able to fit two seats in the middle and passenger-side seats (if the car seats are slim enough). This will also leave the seat behind the driver available for slide-and-fold access to the 3rd row, and it’ll push forward a bit for 3rd-row passenger comfort.

For those only installing forward-facing seats, the outboard center seats push forward with the touch of a button on the center row seat shoulder. It’s quick and easy and gives you enough for an average-sized person to climb into the 3rd row. I did it, and it’s fine.

I will say, once there, the seats sit relatively close to the floor, making legroom a consideration, which is why I’d recommend smaller passengers taking a seat in the 3rd row. This is because the Aviator shares its platform with the Ford Explorer; these SUVs are large enough for daily use 3rd row, but just barely.

The center console is mostly unchanged and includes a wireless phone charger which is a standard feature

What’s The Price of All These Luxury Upgrades?

That, too, is a consideration: You get a lot more for the money, but more money. The addition of Blue Cruise, the upgraded 400 HP engine, the new multimedia system, and other standard features adds between $5K and $8K to the price of the Aviator. When the 2025 Aviator hits dealers in mid-2024, pricing will look like this:

  • Premium: $58,495
  • Reserve: $67,495
  • Black Label $86,995

Lest you think prices simply went up, keep in mind that this is close to what most buyers were actually spending; Lincoln simply eliminated the models and trims that were less popular and standardized the features people were opting for.

The 2025 Lincoln Aviators steering wheel keeps many things we love including a press to talk button under the drivers left thumb

The Essence of Luxury is Not Compromising

They’ve also standardized the idea of sanctuary. This is a quiet car with refined details, an elegant choice of interior colors and finishes, and conveniences at your fingertips that mean you can close the door on the outside world and pay attention to what matters most.

Sometimes, that’s singing along to Frozen with your kids; sometimes, that’s paying attention to a snowy road. Sometimes, it’s getting lost in the memory of your mom and knowing your car will keep you safe as you do.

The Lexus GX 550 Cradles You in Luxury, On or Off-Road https://agirlsguidetocars.com/lexus-gx-550-luxury-on-off-road/ Fri, 02 Feb 2024 15:14:02 +0000 https://agirlsguidetocars.com/?p=631960 Attention Thrillseekers and Carpoolers: Your Lexus GX 550 Has Arrived

It’s long been a powerful favorite among off-roaders who want a luxury ride for the daily drive: The Lexus GX, which competes in off-road rallies around the globe, is the go-to for drivers who tow boats, race cars and snowmobiles – as well as those who merely haul kids to school, sports and family vacations. With 13 years since its last major redesign, it was exciting to see what Lexus added to this popular 3-row SUV and what the company improved for its off-roading fan base.

To get the full experience, we took the 2024 Lexus GX 550 on and off the pavement in beautiful Tucson, Arizona. Since I had not driven the previous iteration of this luxury 2 or 3-row SUV, I went in without expectations. I brought only the reputation and my own memories with this luxury carmaker’s other offerings. I was excited to develop a fresh opinion with no preconceptions.

My verdict? I’m taken aback at how one car, a luxury family SUV, can feel so abundantly luxurious and cocoon-like and yet perform off-road the way it does.

For the much needed redesign, and it’s a beautiful one, Lexus added new technology. A new multilmedis system includes “Hey Lexus” voice activation, a fully redesigned touchscreen and cloud-based navigation (which requires a subscription). Overall, the Lexus GX is an upscale 2 or 3-row SUV for buyers who may also want to venture off the pavement from time to time.

There are three trim levels – Premium, Luxury and Overtrail – and each has a “+” level that adds even more features, such as power folding seats on the Premium + or a cool box in the Luxury + model. And even if you’re just driving to the cabin, you can tow your boat, tackle gravel roads, and fit everyone’s gear inside, too.

Lexus GX 550

Improved Visibility From the Driver’s Seat

One of the biggest areas of focus in the GX is visibitily: This is a large SUV and visibility can be an issue, so Lexus’s engineers focused on making visibility easier. Not only are the dashboard and multimedia screen now a long, flat horizontal dashboard with no screen peeking up above, but there is a surround view camera system on all but the base-level Premium model.

And then, for off-roaders, Lexus added a lower hood for better visibility and creased hood lines that act as guidelines that line up with the front wheels so you can place your wheels on your target trail – something Ford Bronco added much to the joy of its drivers.

What’s Powering this Luxurious Beauty

The Lexus GX 550 is powered by a 3.4L twin turbo V6 with 349 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque, which is more powerful than the outgoing model. It feels really substantial, and I had the opportunity to drive it on highways, in residential areas, hills, mountains, and off-road conditions.

Lexus says the new 10-speed transmission is its smoothest yet, and while I haven’t driven the previous GX, it delivered a very smooth ride.

The GX can tow quite a bit based on which trim you’re looking at. Keep in mind that the Premium through Luxury+ trims are three rows, and the Overtrail and Overtrail+ trims are 5-seat configurations.

  • Premium: 9,063 lb
  • Premium+: 9,041 – 9,063* lbs
  • Luxury: 7,844 – 8,020* lbs
  • Luxury+: 7,601 – 7,800* lbs
  • Overtrail: 9,096 lbs
  • Overtrail+: 9,063 lbs

These towing capacities mean all the toys are coming with you wherever you’d like to go.

Lexus GX 550

The Premium+ Trim is One to Get

If you’re not planning to do any true hardcore off-roading, the Premium+ is all-around the perfect choice. With all of the interior luxury you want and excellent towing capacity (just as much as the Overtrail), a bench seat in the second row makes it a 7-seater and, of course, includes a fantastic interior.

That visibility I talked about earlier is the same in all trims, with a clear digital driver display and a huge 14” media touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Something to keep in mind is that having two child car seats in the second row may mean the third row is almost inaccessible, however, as the second row seats fold and flip forward and are not on rails, so getting in to the third row with kids in the second seems difficult. If you go up to the Luxury trim, you’ll get second-row captain chairs allowing access to the third row through the pass-through in between the two seats, however, over a console.

The third row is power folding, so you could fold one seat down to get into the other through the back liftgate door.

The seats are NuLuxe trimmed, which is Lexus’ faux leather but feels like real leather to me. The front driver and passenger have climate-friendly heated and ventilated seats. In the second row, two outboard seats get heating, as well as their own climate control.

There are six USB ports throughout the GX, two in each row, in all trims.

Some additional cost options we had on our tester include the Cold Package with windshield wiper de-icer, headlamp washers, fast-response interior heat, head-up display, digital key (requires subscription), tonneau cover (a privacy shade for cargo area) and Traffic Jam Assist (read more about Safety features below).

What Makes the Luxury+ Trim So Luxe

Take a step up to the Luxury+ trim, and you get power running boards, a rearview camera mirror, semi-aniline leather seats, captain chairs in the second row, and a Mark Levinson sound system that is amazing. Sound systems mean a lot to me, as driving for sheer joy while listening to my favorite songs is one of my favorite things to do.

The fixed glass panoramic roof in the Luxury+ also has a button to change it from clear to fogged or smoked glass and also a sun shade to close it completely.

You also get massaging front seats in the Luxury trims, which may be reason alone to step up to the highest grade.

Lexus GX 550

Taking the Lexus GX 550 Off-Road in the Overtrail Edition

If you want even more adventure and more mud than gravel, the Overtrail is for you, though you’ll need to stick to 5 passengers in that trim; it is not offered in a 3-row configuration (at least not right now). The Overtrail and Overtrail+ are buyers who want to do serious off-roading. It has a standard skid plate (available on other trims), off-road tuned suspension, beefy 33″ all-terrain tires surrounding 18″ alloy wheels, locking rear and center differentials, Multi-Terrain Select off-road drive modes and Crawl Control for off-road cruise control.

We put the Overtrail trim to the test on a course and trails at the White Stallion Ranch in Tucson, and the GX did not disappoint.

Watch some of our articulation and hill climb and descent in our video.

Lexus GX 550

Safety is a Standard Feature

All trims of the Lexus GX 550 come with Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 with:

  • Pre-collision system with pedestrian detection and intersection support
  • Road sign assist (displays traffic signs)
  • Lane-keeping
  • Adaptive cruise control by radar, including curve speed management
  • Lane departure warning and steering assist
  • Intelligent high beams
  • Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert

Available for $620 USD, city folks might appreciate the optional Traffic Jam Assist, which includes front cross-traffic alert, lane change assist, and driver attention monitoring.

Lexus GX 550

Which Lexus GX 550 Will You Choose?

So now the only question is: Are you going to go for the Luxury package, or do you need Lexus off-road chops? Pricing for the Lexus GX 550 starts at $64,250 for the Premium Trim, $69,250 for the Premium+ and Overtrail trims, and $81,250 for the Luxury+ trim package. Both the Luxury and the Overtrail+ trims we drove are priced at $77,250.

I believe most buyers will go for the Premium+ trim, which offers a lot of features and, yes, value, at $69,250. And I believe there will be a lot of buyers. There are many choices in the luxury 3-row SUV category, but Lexus shines bright with this one, especially in the versatility department.

Nearly 35 years ago families met the delight of a 3-row SUV: Ford Explorer, the original. Suddenly, there was an answer to the minivan; we could carpool, tow our boats and trailers and road trip all in one capable SUV.

Life hasn’t been the same since.

So it was fun to get a peek at the 2025 Ford Explorer, which goes on sale in mid-2024 (prices have not yet been announced). It was re-tooled in just the right places with just the right details, but still keeping the things that we know and love about this mid-size — yes, it’s not overly large — 3-row SUV.

What’s New for 2025?

On first glance, Explorer fans may not see a lot of differences. Like the perfect facelift, it looks like itself, though just a bit fresher.

The front end still features sleek headlights and a mesh grille, though the Explorer name is spelled out across the hood. The rear end is framed by new tail lights, and the Explorer name is spelled out across the gate, matching the hood.

Bigger changes are found inside with a new interior, new materials, and new technology. Ford kept some things the same; the interior space and seating configurations are the same, and the engines are the same. But the company added to the list of standard features and, most importantly, simplified the lineup to make decisions much easier.

A New Simplified Lineup

The Explorer now comes in 4 trims — down from 8. Adventure is the base model; ST Line is the next step up; ST is the more powerful sport trim, and Platinum is top of the line.

The Adventure and ST Line models come with unique grilles, leatherette and cloth interiors, and a 2.3L 4-cylinder turbo engine that generates 300 horsepower, a good amount of power for an SUV this size. The ST comes with a performance interior, a distinct grille, and a 3.5-cylinder turbo engine that puts out 400 HP. Platinum buyers have their choice of either engine and a choice of Luxury or Sanctuary leather upholstery. All models are rear-wheel drive with the option of AWD.

From there, standard features include:

  • Heated power front seats
  • 13” multimedia touchscreen
  • Google operating system
  • 12” driver display
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • 8 USB ports, including 2 in 3rd row
  • 3 12V outlets, including a household outlet
  • Ford CoPilot 360 driver assist and safety system
  • Trailer tow package
  • Rear-wheel drive is standard, and 4WD is available
  • Blue Cruise hands-free driving (all but Adventure trim) with a free 3-month subscription

The view from the drivers seat in the 2025 Ford Explorer

A New Approach to Tech

The multimedia screen seemed huge when the Ford rolled out the current Explorer. Then, all screens grew in size and function. For 2025, Ford added a lot of new features to the system, including a Google operating system with voice activation; just say “Hey Google,” and the assistant is there to set navigation, change the cabin temperature, or turn on your heated seats. Isn’t that nice?

Of course, you can still use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Alexa is built in, and additional apps, including video games and YouTube streaming, can be viewed when the car is parked.

The new driver display is crisp and easy to use, too, and it’s all surrounded by new materials, including a cloth cover that spans the dashboard. I liked how this detail softens the cabin, but it’s even more interesting: the cloth-covered dash is a sound bar that hides B&O speakers behind it.

The touch screen features a fixed toolbar at the bottom for climate controls, and under that are air vents and quick access buttons for radio volume, auto start/stop, and the exterior camera system.

The drop zone in the 2025 Ford Explorer

I Really Love This: A Drop Zone!

Ford calls the center console and phone cubby the ‘drop zone,’ where you can drop your phone, keys, lip balm, and more. Below the phone cubby— which fits two phones and charges one — is a retractable cover with two USB ports and a 12V outlet. The center console also features the dial gear selector, cup holders, and the parking brake. This ‘zone’ has a lot of space and function.

Me in the 3rd row of the 2025 Ford Explorer

Same Good Passenger Space

This is what Explorer fans have loved through all these 35 years: Flexible seating for 6 or 7 passengers. The Explorer still has 2 or 3 seats in the center row and 2 seats in the 3rd row. There are 4 full LATCH sets— lower anchors in all the outboard seats and upper tethers in all rear seats. A rear-facing child car seat will easily fit behind the front passenger seat and in the middle seat in the center row; drivers with two rear-facing car seats in the two center-row outboard seats, however, won’t be able to access the 3rd row without taking those seats out.

Will 3 car seats fit across the center bench? Yes, they will if they are slender enough. This is a car seat question, not a car question, in this case.

While this SUV does seat 6 or 7, keep in mind that the 3rd row is on the small side, and it’s low, with seats only a few inches from the floor. Ford says it has 32” of legroom, but that would be with center seats pushed forward quite a bit. I climbed into the 3rd row and needed to push the center seat forward to fit my knees behind it. However, with the captains chairs pass-through, I could get comfortable. I would consider this a convenience row more than a full-time use 3rd row.

A rendering of the Ford Explorer on the windshield is a nice touch

Style and Function Without Sacrifice

Explorer has always been a family favorite, and it’s clear why; with ample power, even from the smaller engine, 5,000 lbs. of towing, and now for 2025, more elegant interior details, and top-notch tech, it has a modern look, feel, and function. Add the options of all-wheel drive and a panoramic sunroof, and it becomes the chic, capable SUV that preserves our sense of self while letting us haul our kids around, too.

First Look: Mazda CX-70 Elevates Your 2-Row SUV Adventures https://agirlsguidetocars.com/mazda-cx-70-elevates-your-suv-adventures/ Wed, 31 Jan 2024 12:00:40 +0000 https://agirlsguidetocars.com/?p=631876 The 2-row Mazda CX-70 is Bigger than You Think, and for Good Reason

Just when you thought you had seen all the sleek and sporty midsize SUVs designed with modern families in mind — here comes Mazda with the first ever Mazda CX-70. Athletic but  spacious, with smooth edges and a discerning touch, the first-ever Mazda CX-70 fills a void in the brand’s lineup; it’s been missing a larger 5-passenger SUV.

This a two-row, five-seat SUV is similar in size – and in looks, dimensions, and power, but I digress – to the CX-90 we saw revealed a year ago and have all come to love. Mazda isn’t the first to turn its popular 3-row SUV into a more spacious and capable 5-seater; the Honda Passport is a 5 passenger version of the Pilot and the VW Atlas Cross  Sport is a 2-row version of the Atlas.

And then, it’s all that Mazda fans love: performance, comfort, and an elevated style that cater to active car buyers. With two powerful yet fuel-efficient engine options, the Mazda CX-70 is fit for city streets and rugged terrains alike.

Oh, What Big Cargo Space You Have

The CX-70 is a sporty, powerful, and spacious five-seat SUV that is bigger than the CX-50 and but with fewer seats than the CX-90. However, it’s almost identical in size to the CX-90 at first glance. We weren’t given specific numbers, but it appears almost identical, minus that third row and with the addition of some new elements.

The rear cargo area is massive. It is optimized for storage and even has a sub-trunk and power buttons to fold the back seat from the cargo area. This makes perfect sense, knowing which model the CX-70 is based on. And for all the space hogs out there who love to haul gear around, it’s a luxurious amount of room.

Also new is Amazon Alexa integration, so you can control your world from your car.

The Mazda CX-70

Power and Towing So You Can Bring All The Toys

The new CX-70 will come in the same two engine options that are offered on the CX-90: an inline turbo six-cylinder mild hybrid and a plug-in hybrid. Mazda hasn’t released all the official numbers yet, but the power numbers should be the similar to the the CX-90. The turbo six cylinder will be offered in two versions: a 280 HP option and an upgraded 340 horsepower version; the PHEV generates 323 horsepower.

The CX-70 has an optional towing enhancement feature: the Mazda hitch, which includes trailer hitch view to help align a trailer, and towing mode to facilitate alignment of the hitch and the trailer. And, the CX-70 has a 5,000 lb. towing capacity.

Convenient charging for the Mazda CX-70 PHEV.

Plug-and-Play For the Win

The plug-in hybrid model has an electric motor that helps with efficiency and power, and the battery charges when driving and when plugged in. A full charge (estimated based on CX-90) should offer about 25 miles in pure electric range – typically enough to get most people  through the day. I love the fact that you still have your full fuel range to get you up to the mountains for a getaway or on longer commute days.

Mazda CX-70

The Modern Dash is Here to Stay

The dashboard, driver display, touchscreen, and console all look almost identical to the CX-90’s, which means it’s sleek, subtle, and finished in beautiful materials that are soft to the touch everywhere they should be.

The CX-70 also features wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and though the media screen is conrolled via a dial on the center console, when CarPlay is in use it’s a touchscreen.

The red Nappa leather seen on the Turbo inline 6-Cylinder spec we saw looks so amazing; I’m going to guess this will be a ‘Carbon Turbo’ or top trim.

Wondering if there’s a Vast Suite of Safety Features?

The CX-70 will also feature a similar suite of advanced driver assistance features that the CX-90 has, which include i-Activsense and:

  • Lane Keep Assist
  • Hill Launch Assist
  • Vehicle Exit Warning
  • Driver Attention Alert
  • Blind Spot Monitoring
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System
  • Lane Departure Warning System
  • Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go

The new dark grille on the Mazda CX-70 is substantial.

Now the Hard Choice: Mild Hybrid or PHEV

The difference is distinct with Mazda’s engine options: one is more powerful, the other offers pure electric driving.

With the Plug-In Hybrid, you’ll need a charge cord to take advantage of the electric driving range. The PHEV models feature larger batteries and more powerful electric motors compared to hybrids, which are assisted by gas engines.

The mild hybrid has the benefit of power and efficiency from an electric motor that you never have to charge (driving does that), but no pure electric driving. It’s gas-powered engine is assisted by a smaller electric motor and battery, but the batteries are too small to power the vehicle bu themselves. Despite that, you may see better fuel efficiency in mild hybrid compared to vehicles with similarly sized engines.

If it were my choice, I would choose the PHEV and hope that I can get it with that beautiful red interior.

Mazda hasn’t announced pricing yet, but we’re guessing it’ll fall into the high $40,000 range to start and top out at about $60,000. But, that’s a guess. What we do know is that equipped with cutting-edge safety features, advanced technology and a user-friendly media system, the new CX-70 is a welcome addition to the Mazda lineup. And with all that extra cargo space and tow capacity, when it arrives this summer it’ll be a welcome addition to many driveways, too.

The 2025 Chevy Equinox Dazzles with Looks, Tech and Trim https://agirlsguidetocars.com/the-2025-chevy-equinox-dazzles-with-looks-tech-and-trim/ Wed, 24 Jan 2024 12:00:38 +0000 https://agirlsguidetocars.com/?p=631698 Chevy Freshens the Game with the Redesign of their Best-Selling SUV, the 2025 Chevy Equinox

This week, Chevrolet continued their streak of redesigns with the unveiling of the 2025 Chevrolet Equinox.  In the past 18 months Chevy has refreshed their entire SUV lineup. All of which have been met with positive reviews. Especially the 2024 Traverse – which consumers are still waiting for.

I was skeptical about how “refreshed” the Equinox would look.  The previous gen isn’t my favorite in exterior styling, and the interior seemed a bit out of date for my taste, especially compared to some of the competitors in this segment, like the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Hyundai Santa Fe that offer vehicles with more power and fuel economy.

Imagine my surprise when I walked into a staged space and saw a “Baby Traverse” with a bold new look that immediately caught the eye.

It’s safe to say this two-row SUV has received a major glow-up for the 2025 model year. At this point, it’s unknown if the price will be comparable to the 2024 Equinox.  (Chevrolet will release pricing as they get closer to production.)

The redesign has new tech, a fresh new design, AND an all-new trim level called Activ, and I’m going to tell you all about it.

2025 Chevy Equinox

Let’s Start with the Trim

The first-ever Equinox Activ trim level is inspired by drivers whose journeys don’t stop just because the pavement ends.  The Activ trim has a unique front end with styling that has an “off-road look.”  The 2025 Equinox Activ comes with all-terrain tires on 17” aluminum wheels. The interior is sporty and comfortable, with seats covered in Evotex and sueded microfiber, which feels more comfortable than expected. Notably, drivers will have the option to upgrade to a two-tone finish with an available white roof.

There will also be two additional trim levels offered: LT (entry-level trim with mainstream comfort and convenience) and RS (featuring sportier mirrors and badging, 19” wheels with the option to upgrade to 20” wheels, and two-tone red and blue interior stitching.)

Equinox Will Have More Standard Safety Features than Ever Before

This (4th) generation of Equinox will have more standard safety tech with Chevy Safety Assist, Teen Driver, and Intersection Automatic Emergency Braking across ALL trim levels. (Teen Driver3 is a technology that allows parents to activate customizable vehicle settings and view their teen’s driving performance through a new Connected Teen Driver feature in the myChevrolet mobile app.)

Additional standard safety features include a side bicyclist alert, a rear vision camera, a rear cross-traffic alert with braking, a rear seat reminder, park assist, and enhanced lane keep assistance.  It also included adaptive cruise control and a lane change alert with a blind-spot monitor.

Refreshed tech feels more current to competitor’s standards.

There’s an upgraded 11-inch driver information center (the place where you see your gauges and MPH) and an 11.3-inch color touchscreen (also known as the multimedia area) that offers wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto.

Chevy emphasized that the new screen is very intuitive and easy to use.

No more clunky gear shifter.

2025 Chevy Equinox

One thing I’m excited about in the 2025 Chevy Equinox is the electronic gear shifter that has been placed on the column (like a turn signal stick.) Moving it here really opens things up and gives the feeling of having more legroom and front cabin space.  The best part is that you get a pass-through (a little hidey hole in the console to put something valuable like a tablet or hide a small purse out of sight.)

2025 Chevrolet Equinox

Toasty Buns Will Be Trending

For the first time ever, every 2025 Chevy Equinox will have heated seats and a heated steering wheel! This is HUGE. Chevy listened to consumer feedback and studied the features that were most often ordered or requested. So, they’ve included it as a standard for everyone in the 2025 Equinox.

Enough Power for Everyday in the 2025 Chevy Equinox

Under the hood, the 2025 Chevy Equinox will have a refreshed 1.5 L turbo with CVT (a continuously variable transmission) in front-wheel drive versions or an 8-speed automatic transmission with available all-wheel drive vehicles. It will offer 175 horsepower and 203 lb.-ft of torque with AWD.

For both RS and Activ trims, drivers get selectable drive modes (by using this dial in the center), so you will be able to toggle between normal and snow drive modes on front-wheel drive vehicles.

It wouldn’t be considered an SUV (sport utility vehicle) if it couldn’t tow. The new Equinox FWD versions are trailering-capable up to 800 lbs, and AWD versions can accommodate up to 1500 lbs.

2025 Chevy Equinox

Bolder Design from Chevy

The new design is inspired by ever-popular Chevy trucks. The SUV is both wider and taller. Borrowing from Chevy truck DNA, you also have squared wheel wells.

Equinox also sports a new bold grille that also feels wider and more substantial. The RS grille has attractive dark chrome accents to complete the look. As a matter of fact, each trim level (LT, Activ, and RS each has a unique front-end design.)

There are full LED headlights and taillights which stand out with their sleek design.

In the back, you have a boxier shape, which looks impressive and gives you more function in the cargo space. Speaking of cargo space, you have tons of it and a hidden subfloor that allows for additional storage out of sight. If that’s not enough, you can fold down your 60/40 split-bench second-row seats to have a total of 63.5 cubic feet of storage.

With its new bold look, the 2025 Chevy Equinox is sure to appeal to new buyers who may not have had this particular vehicle on their shortlist.  Pricing is expected to be released closer to production starting, which should be later this year.

Why I Bought the Acura MDX Advance https://agirlsguidetocars.com/why-i-bought-the-acura-mdx-advance/ Fri, 19 Jan 2024 12:00:25 +0000 https://agirlsguidetocars.com/?p=631488 Size Matters When Peace of Mind is Priceless; that’s why I Purchased the 2024 Acura MDX

Leaving you on a cliffhanger about my next car decision, I finally made a choice. While my love for the Acura RDX is undeniable, practicality led me to the 2024 Acura MDX with the Advance package. This premium three-row SUV, wrapped in Liquid Carbon metallic exterior paint and adorned with espresso-colored premium leather inside, signifies a significant upgrade for my family.

This larger 3-row SUV, with seating that accommodates up to 7 passengers, isn’t just a step up in size; it’s a leap towards more technology, peace of mind during family drives, and a touch of added luxury. The cost of this upgrade, with an MSRP of $64,100, may seem steep, but it’s a move I made willingly for the enhanced driving experience and the perks of a premium SUV. And yes, this is the first time I’ve ever been brand loyal – a testament to my experience with the brand.

The Evolution of My Family’s Needs, and Mine

Before getting my 2021 RDX, the idea of a larger, three-row SUV like the MDX seemed unnecessary. Our family of three didn’t immediately require the extra space, and trips with extended family members were sporadic. The RDX served its purpose well during those initial years, but as our family dynamics shifted, it became apparent that a more spacious vehicle was needed.

The arrival of our second child after a nine-year journey through secondary infertility marked a turning point. Sibling squabbles in the car became a norm, and the limitations of the RDX’s two-row configuration were increasingly evident. The quest for a larger SUV was set in motion. While I did test-drive a pretty capable minivan, it didn’t suit my style. A test drive in the MDX Type S Advance provided a clear answer: I had to have it.

Choosing the Acura MDX: A Blend of Power and Practicality

Opting for the MDX, despite its larger size, didn’t mean sacrificing the driving experience. In fact, the MDX managed to retain the sedan-like driving feel thanks to its SH-AWD (Super Handling All Wheel Drive). It also provides more power with its 10-speed automatic V6 engine. My 2024 MDX has more technology and convenience features than my 2021 RDX, making it a seamless transition. While the allure of the Type S Advance’s 355 horsepower, massaging seats, and adaptive air was tempting, the MDX Advance package struck the perfect balance, providing all the necessary upgrades I was looking for.

Picking the Perfect Color: Sticking With What’s Familiar

Despite initially wanting the Phantom Violet Pearl, logistical challenges (like it being 200 miles away) prompted me to reconsider. Staying true to my exterior paint preference, I chose Liquid Carbon Metallic, a dark metallic gray that gives the MDX a menacing appearance. With a full-time job, mom duties, and side ventures keeping me busy, regular car washes are a luxury. While mobile car washes offer convenience, the associated expenses can add up quickly. The Liquid Carbon Metallic shade became my preference for its forgiving quality amid the inevitable dirt of daily life. In contrast, the leather interior showcases a captivating espresso hue, deviating from my usual choice of black or dark gray. For me, this combination emanates a luxurious appeal.

Must-Have Upgrades in the Acura MDX

The decision to upgrade went beyond just seeking a larger vehicle; it aimed to address the deficiencies of my RDX. While my RDX, equipped with the Technology package, heated leather seats, a panoramic sunroof, and a backup camera, it fell short in providing certain conveniences I knew I couldn’t do without in my next car. The MDX emerged as the perfect solution, seamlessly rectifying these gaps with lots of specific features that conveniently enhance my driving experience in my family SUV:

  • Heated steering wheel – not having this made me realize I hate touching a cold steering wheel while driving
  • The 360-degree surround-view camera offers a view of my surroundings
  • Remote start from the key fob versus the AcuraLink App
  • Power folding mirrors

2024 Acura MDX

Acura MDX Advanced Features

The MDX Advance package boasts a range of features that not only enhance my driving experience, but also the comfort of my passengers from young to old. These are the features in my Acura MDX that I find particularly appealing:

  • A 10.5-inch head-up display provides clear visibility of navigation, speed limit, and the speedometer, enhancing my overall driving experience.
  • The ELS Studio 3D premium audio system with 16 speakers offers an unparalleled audio experience. My husband was amazed by the sound and the number of speakers. It’s worth noting that newer models are transitioning to the Bang & Olufsen system.
  • Tri-climate controls are a practical addition, catering to my preferences as a woman of a certain age while also addressing the varying temperature preferences of my husband and oldest daughter, thus minimizing debates over car temperature.
  • Second-row heated outboard seats contribute to passenger comfort, which is especially appreciated by my older daughter, who tends to run cold.
  • The MDX Advance provides multiple charging options, including a wireless charging pad, USB-A and USB-C ports in the first row, additional USB-A ports in the second row, and even an AC outlet in the second row for added convenience.
  • The 16-way power seats with power lumbar, thigh extension, and side bolsters offer superior comfort during longer drives, providing unexpected relief. The support is akin to a comforting hug, a welcome relief, especially needed for moms after a long and demanding day.
  • Ventilated seats, which I experienced in the Type S Advance, are anticipated to be a welcome feature during the upcoming summer, enhancing overall driving comfort.
  • The three-position front passenger seat memory, a feature my husband appreciates, is a notable addition he wishes his Volvo XC90 had.
  • Iconic drive ambient LED cabin lighting, available in 27 color themes, creates a visually delightful atmosphere, adding an element of surprise for my youngest daughter during pickups from daycare.
  • The power lift tailgate with hands-free access and walk-away close proves convenient, especially when juggling my (soon to be) four year old, purse, and other items.
  • The LED outer door handle lights and interior lights automatically illuminate when the car is approached, enhancing both security and aesthetics.

2024 Acura MDX

Storage Solutions and Family Comfort in the Acura MDX

Storage has always been a standout feature in my RDX, and the MDX lived up to expectations. The MDX’s thoughtful storage solutions contribute to maintaining an organized and clutter-free interior, enhancing the overall driving experience for my family. Drawing from my experience with the RDX, where storage was a notable highlight:

  • The familiar hidden storage in the cargo area, cherished in my RDX, made a welcome return in my new MDX. This space serves as a discreet hideaway for gifts, ensuring my family remains unaware of their surprises.
  • The large center console is impressive. Within this spacious compartment, I stow away an extra pair of shades, a clean microfiber cloth for impromptu fingerprint cleanups, and a secret storage tray. Ingeniously, my kids are yet to crack the code to open it, making it an ideal spot to conceal my favorite candies.
  • Despite the MDX lacking the floating console that was a notable feature in my RDX, previously utilized for my wallet on purse-free outings, I’ve adjusted by placing my purse strategically on the floor, either in front of the passenger or behind when my husband occupies the front seat.

Acura MDX

Dealership Experience: A Hassle-Free Approach

Dealership experiences had tested my patience in the past, leading me to discover the ease and efficiency of using a broker. Going this route had proven to be a breeze, ensuring not only a stress-free transaction but also a high likelihood of securing a favorable deal. I was able to get the 2024 Acura MDX Advance at 9% off of the MSRP. Add to that loyalty incentives and trade-in of my low-mileage 2021 RDX, and it was a sweet deal.

All the controls in the Acura MDX

This Just Might Be My Forever Car

With a little over 1,000 miles on my 2024 Acura MDX, I find myself content and surprisingly contemplating this as my “forever” car. Despite a monthly payment increase of nearly $200 and a slightly lower fuel economy compared to my RDX, the peace of mind, premium features, and the joy of driving a sporty SUV that mirrors a sedan have made the investment worthwhile.

The MDX stands as a testament to Acura’s commitment to blending luxury, practicality, and performance, ensuring it meets not just my preferences but also the evolving needs of my growing family.
