Ever been to a fancy car show? It’s a great place to dress up, browse classic and exotic cars and do a bit of people watching.

It is certainly exciting to walk onto the grounds of any grand car event, such as ModaMiami, which took place at the end of February. There were lots of beautiful cars to look at, and there was plenty of commotion between the auctions and people buzzing around. And no matter which section you explored, there were people excited about all of the vehicles.

As events like this one, The Amelia Concours d`Elegance, and Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance grow in popularity, more people are bound to attend. What once seemed like a high-end boys-only club has evolved into a fun, leisurely-paced social foused around cars. And with that, there is plenty of fashion to be seen. You’ll want to be seen but not stand out – if that makes sense.

Concours d'Elegance

What Will You See at a Car Show Like This?

A Concours event such as Amelia Island, the Greenwich Concours or Pebble Beach is hosted to showcase cars of all types, usually at a high-end hotel like the Ritz Carlton or other golf-focused establishments. At these events, you’ll see historically significant cars, expensive sports cars, and other awe-inspiring vehicles that you might not see anywhere else.

Like any event, people want to dress up for the occasion. There are always a few people dressed to the nines in stilettos on various golf courses, but there are many more people in upscale outfits with more comfortable shoes. If you’ve ever worn stilettos on a golf course, you know that isn’t the move.

Two Critical Things to Know Before You Go

Please learn from my mistakes. There are two things you can’t forget, no matter which event you plan to attend: suntan lotion and comfortable shoes. The sun is hot, and there often isn’t much protection since you are on the golf course. Hit the store before you go and grab a few cans or bottles of your favorite SPF. And we all know that if your feet hurt, you won’t want to walk the whole show.

Chic Choices Across the Board at the Concours d’Elegance

For women, you’ll see many sundresses with fashion-forward flats or sneakers. You’ll also see plenty of flowy two-piece outfits and cute suits made from lightweight materials. Tailored shorts and designer flip-flops are always in, even if they aren’t worn together.

For the men, you’ll see a lot of very fancy suits and shoes. These are not the heavy-weight suits you’d wear to a meeting, but more of a suit you’d wear to a summer wedding. There are plenty of Dior and Versace shoes with a bit of flair and many cool hats (again, the sun!).

It also depends on what you are doing at the event. Those who are simply spectating are usually more casual in dress. Shorts, tank tops, and sundresses are acceptable. Those with a vehicle in the show vying for a trophy will likely be more dressed up. Similarly, if you are involved in an auction, you will probably need a little more elegance for your Concours experience.

The Cars Are a Fortune, But Your Outfit Needn’t Be

On the more budget-friendly side of things, Amazon has some great sundress options that work well for such events. This Ribbed Knit Maxi dress by ARTFREE comes in 15 different colors and is only $49.99. It’s made of a stretchy and breathable fabric that can work for day or night. Full disclosure: I bought this and washed it to get the wrinkles out before wearing it. It came a little crumpled in the package.

Similarly, this Crew Neck Sleeveless High-Waisted dress from Pink Queen is only $39 and comes in 10 colors. It was long enough to keep my legs out of the sun, and the crew neck made it modest enough for day or night. I also washed it right out of the package to remove some of the wrinkles, and it looked much more expensive than it was.

Stylish Cars Call for Stylish Tailoring

Alice + Olivia is a popular midrange brand with matching sets seen on hotel lawns all over the country. The Alice + Olivia Donald High-Rise Linen-Blend Shorts look great and the matching Macey Linen Blend Blazer makes for a nice tailored outfit. You don’t need a blazer, though. A crisp, white tank top might work as well. Pair that with some clean white sneakers, and you will have a comfortable but fashionable outfit for a nice day walking around looking at cars.

Anthropologie is another great source for clothing, like this Tommie Cap-Sleeve Smocked Front-Zip Shirt Dress. At $170, it comes in four colors and is made of light cotton. It’s also machine washable for versatility. I prefer a midi dress to a mini for events like this because the wind can kick up on the golf course without much notice.

Emphasizing the Significance of Footwear: Shoes

I logged about 10,000 steps each day, walking around and checking out the cars during ModaMiami. One thing that can’t be understated is having comfortable shoes. This isn’t the time to wear a fresh pair of sneakers or uncomfortable flats. You can wear them at night if you can’t live without them. Otherwise, I would highly suggest your most comfortable or favorite shoes. I wore my favorite Celine trainers, the low-lace up version because they are comfortable and go with everything.

If you already have some, a pair of Birkenstock Arizona EVA Sandals might also work. These come in cute colors and are comfortable. These yellow Guilhermina Slingback Flats from Anthropologie have good reviews and are reportedly easy to walk in. The strap on the back is always appreciated to keep them on while walking around. If you are looking for a bit of height, these Soda Topic Open Toe Buckle Ankle Strap Espadrilles are only $34 from Amazon and would match many outfits.

Luxury Car Shows Are Fun For all the Reasons

I really enjoyed seeing older cars that you don’t see many of these days, such as classic Porsche and Mercedes-Benz models. And there is no shortage of new supercars on the lawns of these events; they tend to draw a crowd.

People-watching is good, too; it’s the perfect way to take a break from walking around. It’s always intriguing to see how people interpret fashion for an event like this. Some even match their cars in the show.

And if you are looking for a specific vehicle, that is on the menu, too. Many of these events allow all attendees to bid on the cars and not all are over the top; some are very affordable. You can usually scope out the attendance list ahead of time

There are more Concours events than ever, thanks to companies like classic car insurance seller Hagerty investing in them, and the popularity of Pebble Beach. These events take place throughout the year, so find one near you, plan time to shop and make an event of it!

Here’s What To See At The Car Show This Year

We used to love car shows for the fun, fancy concept vehicles (which would never come to market), and for the chance to get into the practical, affordable off-shoots to decide what to buy next.

But these days, there are fewer concepts and more cars you can buy, from practical to drool-worthy. Just like us, carmakers have become more pragmatic and less frivolous.

So when you see something new and impressive at a car show, pay attention; you’ll likely see it on the road and maybe even in your driveway.

At this year’s New York Auto Sh,ow, there was a lot of news, new debut models, and more than a few blinker lights pointing to the future. Here’s what’s to keep an eye out for in the future.

The Best Cars Of the Year: World Car Awards Winners Announced

The show kicked off with the reveal of the World Car Awards winners for 2024, and there were some surprises — and some sure bets.

It was not surprising that Kia walked away with the World Car of the Year award for the Kia EV9; this electric 3-row SUV has won many awards for its innovative approach and for delivering just what people want and need in a full-size SUV.

It was a surprise, however, that the Kia EV9 also won World Electric Car for the EV9, beating out the Volvo EX30 and BMW i5.

Neither BMW nor Volvo was ignored, however. BMW won for World Luxury Car for the 5 series, which includes the all-electric i5, and Volvo took the top prize for World Urban Car for the EX30.

But there were surprises: Toyota Prius was recognized as the World Car Design of the Year for the redesign that smoothed out its rear and roof lines, creating an elegant, flowing look.

And the World Performance Car award went to Hyundai for the Ioniq 5 N. The all-electric Ioniq 5 added not only more power but a drive mode option that creates a distinctly gas-powered sports car feeling, complete with paddle shifters, engine sounds, and rev-matching. It’s pretty incredible and a lot of fun and proves that computers replicate the gas-fed machine in a way that will generate a lot of delight.

Two New Lines, Shown in Concepts From Genesis

The only concept cars at this year’s show are from Genesis, but to call them a concept is a bit deceiving; Genesis usually builds their concept cars, eventually.

For this year’s New York Auto Show, the brand rolled out 3 concepts under the “Magma” name. Each is painted bright magma-inspired orange and infused with more power and performance capabilities such as enhanced suspension, steering, and power. The three models include the G80 sedan called Genesis X, the GV60 all-electric (taking a cue from the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, perhaps?), and the Berlinetta, a two-seat sports coupe. This one was built for video games but the designers liked it so much they decided to build a concept. Based on the reaction, we may have just seen the first sports coupe from Genesis. We hope so.

Then, Genesis rolled out the NeoLun SUV concept. A smooth-surfaced body without creases or protrusions, this may be the sleekest SUV ever. Think Rolls Royce or Maybach-level poshness, but modern and all Genesis. The concept had Eames-style seats, purple suede, and ambient lights. It featured coach doors that open outward from the center and a running board that pops out to serve as a step-up into the car. When it comes to market (and we’re assuming it will, based on past Genesis concepts), it’ll be slightly different, but expect it to be large, posh, and pricey.

Oh, and the Magma GV80 Coupe that Genesis revealed at last year’s New York Auto Show? It’s here this year, too… as a GV80 Coupe (though not Magma) that is available for order.

Ford Showed a New Super Car: The Mustang GTD

GTD stands for Grand Touring Daytona, and the newest GT from Ford is exclusive, with a V8 engine that produces 800 HP and a price tag of about $300,000. But is not just any GT: it’s the ultimate Mustang. It carries the classic Mustang silhouette, has a rear spoiler that functions like those on F1 cars, adjusting to direct airflow and downforce, and beefier tires. Production is limited, and prospective buyers will need to get in line and make a case for their purchase (so no flippers allowed).

Ford also introduced a two-of-a-kind Mustang GT designed by actress and mechanic Sydney Sweeney. After partnering with Sweeney, who has restored her own Mustang and Bronco in projects in the past, the company asked her to custom design her own version. The company built two: One for Sweeney and one to give away. The winner, Brittley C, was introduced at the show and allowed to drive the car away, so it’s not on display, but it’s never far from our hearts, and it’s on our Instagram.

Infiniti Brings Out the Newest Infiniti QX80

We love this full-size, 3-row 7 or 8 passenger SUV for the sense of safety and security it exudes — exactly what you expect from a full-size SUV.  But for 2025, the QX80 gets even more luxe: The Autograph edition, with a price tag of $110,000+, has front and rear massaging seats, Klipsch premium sound with surround speakers in the front seat headrests, and screens to control just about everything, including an expansive flat multimedia screen, driver display, and a lower climate control screen.

The exterior has been subtly redesigned with a bold new front face capped with a dash-pattern light bar. Daytime running lights span the front and are replicated across the rear light bar. Inside, center seats slide, lift, and tilt for third-row access, and there are comforts for everyone in all seats. With a starting price of $82,500, the QX80 also has a new V6 turbo engine that generates 450 HP and 516 lb-ft. of torque, offering more power and better fuel economy than the prior V8 engine.

Chevrolet Blazer Pursuit at the Auto Show

The Blazer, which hit a few speed bumps along the road this winter, is back. The company fixed the issues and returned it to the market. At the auto show, Chevrolet displayed it alongside the Blazer EV Pursuit, their first EV designed for high-speed driving and marketed to law enforcement. Imagine how nice it will be for towns to be able to recharge their police cars overnight, to have that instant torque when an officer needs to get someplace quickly and be able to drive in near silence all day long.

Polestar’s Lineup Grows

This company, formerly Volvo’s performance arm, has evolved into Volvo’s performance-focused electric sibling. Designed in Sweden and mostly built in China, the company focused on two new models at the New York Show: Polestar 3, a classically styled SUV, and Polestar 4, a coupe-shaped SUV.

The 3, with seating for 5 and a price tag starting at $73,400, will be built in South Carolina starting in 2025, and when it is, a purchase will qualify for federal tax incentives. Cool features include a LiDAR pod for advanced driver assistance capabilities (and eventually some self-driving features…?), a spoiler on the front hood for enhanced aerodynamics, up to 315 miles of driving range, and very good power: 517 HP.

The Polestar 4 blends the SUV shape with that of a coupe; its rear roofline dips toward the rear bumper, creating a sportier look. Giving in to the idea that a rear window in a coupe is useless, the company eliminated it, adding a digital rearview mirror instead for full visibility. This model, priced from $54,900, has seating for 5, a 300-mile driving range, and up to 544 HP.

To entice customers, Polestar offers federal tax incentives on all leased models, so consider that $7,500 discount yours if you lease.

Farewell Forte, Hello Kia K4

In taking the brand more toward the premium end of the car spectrum, Kia replaced the Forte with the now fancier K4. On the outside you’ll see distinct design details similar to its siblings such as the Sorento, Sportage and K5: heartbeat daytime running lights, a wide new grille, a light bar across the rear.

Inside, it’ll feature wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an advanced digital key “Hey Kia” voice assistance —the first Kia to get this! — and over-the-air updates that will allow owners to download custom graphics for their favorite NBA team. There will be two power options: Standard, with 147 HP, and the GT line Turbo, with 195 HP. Oh, and there’ll be a 5-door hatchback version (though I thought it looked more like a wagon), which will no doubt find fans.

Nissan Kicks Up Design in the New Kicks

Much sportier than the first model, this compact SUV is the first to show off a new design language from Nissan: Vertical daytime running lights and a gloss black grille that spans the front of the SUV, and a similar approach with the rear tail lights. The look is sharp and modern. For Kicks, Nissan has a “sneaker-inspired design” with tread-like details on the lower bumpers and rocker panels. The 2025 model will sport 141 HP, the option of AWD, a contrast roof, a new flatscreen multimedia system, and sportier interior details.

New Power Options and an Off-Road Edition for Hyundai Tucson and Santa Fe

Hyundai introduced new powertrains and an XRT edition for the Tucson and Santa Fe, which also have a slightly new look. The big news is that you can now have a plug-in hybrid for either, as well as a hybrid or gas version.

And then, both will be available in the XRT off-road-capable trim, with side cladding to avoid damaging the exterior, side steps, and all-terrain tires. Santa Fe’s front face is now more distinct from the Tucson, which also had its look tweaked a bit. Inside, Hyundai updated the user interface, adding dials for the radio and a few more buttons for quick access to key functions. But those who love the wide-spanning multimedia screen won’t be disappointed; Hyundai left this intact.

The New York Auto Show runs through April 7th at New York’s Javits Center. Bring your comfy shoes and get ready for a ride or two, too; you can hop into the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N and experience what it’s like to go 0-60 MPH in 3 seconds. Or you can take a spin in one of the electric cars on the lower level. And be sure to stop by and see my friend Seth at Green Living Guy and ask all your electric car questions. He has answers! Happy car shopping!

It’s Women’s History Month: Grab a Friend and Celebrate at an Auto Show https://agirlsguidetocars.com/womens-history-month-grab-friend-auto-show/ Thu, 07 Mar 2024 12:00:37 +0000 https://agirlsguidetocars.com/?p=632558 Girls Night Out at the New York Auto Show Is a Great Place to See Your Power At Work

I’ll confess: I’m not a Hallmark Holiday kind of girl. I am bad at remembering dates; I am more sentimental about important moments in life than the dates on which they occurred, and find the whole calendar of “celebration days” to be overwhelming.

Celebrating women in the automotive space is a year-round endeavor in our world. We do this daily, weekly, monthly. We LOVE sharing stories about women who are changing the auto world from the inside. We even have a podcast about it!

However, Women’s History Month is one I should probably not overlook when it comes to cars. Women have had a huge but often unseen impact on automotive since its start; women continue to impact the science and business of automotive in a major way, and women are the major buyers of cars.

Just to refresh, we buy 65% of all cars and influence the purchase of another 20%. That’s a lot of financial firepower and a lot of cars.

Women’s Impact on Automotive is On Display at the Auto Show

The auto show is more than just a great place to shop for a car — though it’s a great place to shop for a car. It’s where you’ll see female power in the auto industry clearly on display. This is one of the things I truly love when I go to an auto show.

As you tour your local car show this year, here are some things you should stop and look at: the hidden stories and those that are very clear, that show how much impact women have on the auto industry.

Here are just a few you’ll see very clearly.

Buh-bye to the “Booth Babe” Era

If you attended car shows in the ’70s and ‘80s, you might remember scantily clad women standing next to the cars. Those days are gone, thankfully, and the credit goes to Margery Krevsky Dosey, founder of Productions Plus. Across all auto shows, you’ll see professionally dressed, on-brand product specialists, more women than men, who are knowledgeable about the cars on display and ready to answer your questions. She proved to automakers that smart, approachable people who could answer questions would actually send potential buyers to dealerships.

Imagine that: Smart people are better at selling a product than a demeaned, objectified woman.

The Impact of DEI

This is more of a behind-the-scenes story, but as you look around, especially at General Motors displays—Buick, Chevrolet, Cadillac, and GMC—you’ll see how the roots of diversity, equity, and inclusion have blossomed. From GM’s CEO, Mary Barra, to the legions of women and people of color who make up the company’s 160K employees, DEI has been a cornerstone of this company’s operations and success.

And the results show it. GM, which is #25 on the Fortune 500, commands 18% of the US car market and generated more than $178 billion in global sales last year. That’s quite the case for DEI.

The Best and Brightest Women Are Plotting the Path Forward

Hyundai has had some exciting announcements recently: You’ll be able to buy a Hyundai on Amazon; you’ll be able to pay for parking and other things through the multimedia system; Hyundai’s electric car portfolio, which has some of the fastest charging, most reliable and furthest driving EVs —  is developing quickly. To accomplish this, the company had to hire some incredibly talented people. Olabisi Boyle is indicative of this effort; Hyundai was able to lure her from Visa, where she ran mobile payment systems.

The company was also able to lure Claudia Marquez from Nissan and, before that, Infiniti, to lead Genesis. The highest-ranking Latina executive in the US, Claudia oversees an exciting collection of some of the most beautiful and innovative cars on the market. She is building a dealership network from the ground up.

Detroit Auto Show Lexus F1 concept

Lexus Has YOU to Thank

I love this story: when Lexus rolled out the first RX SUV, women flocked to its dealers to buy one. It struck a huge chord: An SUV with great ground clearance and visibility, a comfortable car-like ride, the luxury of Lexus, and the reliability of Toyota. Fast forward to 2024 and thanks to its female customers, the company is bringing more SUVs to the market — the redesigned GX with a real 3rd row, the brand new 7 or 8 passenger TX, and new versions of the RX and NX. Check out the company’s designs and know they were designed with you in mind.

Subaru Loves You

Subaru has long recognized the importance of its female owners. Sensible women love the fact that these cars are reliable and capable and give us the muscle to do what we need to do. The company recognizes what we do in and with our Subarus: we visit our National Parks, get outdoors, and spend time with those we love most — including our pets. To show they really understand us, you’ll see a novel approach to Subaru’s exhibit, focusing on the outdoors, adventure, and, yes, puppies.

Toyota Sienna minivan

Minivans Are Cool

When you have four kids, a carpool to manage or a family that loves to road trip, a minivan is cool. WAY cool. In fact, they are now so cool that there are some that have a waiting list: it takes months to get a Toyota Sienna, popular for its all-wheel drive and hybrid fuel economy. The Honda  Odyssey, with sliding center row seats and a removable middle seat, as well as interior cameras so you can see those angles fighting, er, sleeping, in their car seats, also has a waitlist.

The Kia Caravan has been redesigned with more features and technology, and Volkswagen is coming back to the world of the 7-passenger van with sliding doors. This time, though, it’s with the all-electric ID Buzz, which is sure to add a huge wallop of whimsy and fun to your daily commute.

Millennials and Gen Z drivers alike are looking for more family-friendly SUVs

Women Buying SUVs Changed Everything

You know this. I know this. Finally, everyone else accepted the fact: women like SUVs. Now, there are more choices than ever: small SUVs, large SUVs, electric, hybrid, turbo, even diesel SUVs. SUVs make up more than half of all passenger vehicle sales, with cars only comprising 20 percent (vans and trucks make up the rest).

The tipping point came about a decade ago when SUV and crossover sales started to surpass sedan sales, and it hasn’t stopped. We’re even seeing popular sedans becoming SUV-ified (looking at you Toyota Corolla Cross!) and some companies abandoning sedans altogether — with a few sports car or EV exceptions (hello, Ford).

But really, why should the auto industry build cars you don’t want?

I Need New Tires. Should I Buy the Same Ones My Car Came With? https://agirlsguidetocars.com/need-new-tires-should-i-buy-same-ones-my-car/ Wed, 28 Feb 2024 12:00:35 +0000 https://agirlsguidetocars.com/?p=632441 Not Necessarily. The Right Tires for Your Car Are the Goal

The phrase no one ever wants to hear: “You need new tires.” When the tread depth on your wheels reaches 4/32nds of an inch, or even if the treads look fine, but your tires are more than 6 years old, it’s time to think about replacing your tires. However, technology has come a long way in the last few years, including with tire shopping.

Selecting new tires can seem like a daunting task at first, but it doesn’t have to be. There are a lot of tires on the market, but we can help you find the right ones for your vehicle. And you don’t have to buy the same tires that are currently on your car, especially if your vehicle is out of warranty. The freedom!

Here’s how to find the right tires for your vehicle and how to potentially find a good deal at the same time. We can think of it like shopping for shoes but shoes for your car: still more fun than it used to be.

new tires

What Are OEM Tires, and What Advantages Do They Have?

When you are tire shopping, you might run across the term “OE” or “OEM.” This means Original Equipment or Original Equipment Manufacturer and means the parts came from the factory. For instance, an OEM windshield wiper on your Toyota Highlander came from Toyota’s factory. Same with the tires, but you’ll find brands like Michelin or Goodyear. If you think about it like this, these are like the Nordstrom of tires. And who doesn’t love Nordstrom, right?

If your car is still under warranty and you take it to the dealership where you purchased it, you can get a good deal on such tires. You can ask your service advisor or call the dealership to get information. Otherwise, some stores worth considering, like Costco Tires and Tire Rack, might offer a better deal.

There are a few tips to get the most out of your new tires:

  • Always replace in pairs, if possible. Replace two tires or all four, but not just one.
  • Make sure you buy the correct type of tires for your vehicle. For instance, truck tires won’t fit on a sedan, and sedan tires aren’t always enough for larger vehicles.
  • There are different types of tires, depending on the season. There are run-flat tires, tires for heavy-duty trucks, and tires made specifically for EVs.

One benefit to buying OEM tires from your dealership is that they will likely be there already or can be shipped directly to the dealership. Then, you can install the new tires right there without much fuss. Sometimes, these tires are more expensive, but they can reduce the hassle slightly.

Another advantage is that sometimes, these tires have been designed specifically for the vehicle. Specialty trucks, sports cars, and even regular vehicles might see better tire life with tires specifically made for the vehicle type.

The Benefits of Non-OEM Tires

One of the benefits of purchasing from Costco Tires or Tire Rack is that you can often find good deals. These would be like a more universal tire situation, perhaps the Target equivalent. Get a good deal, and be on your way.

Buying four new tires is usually a good way to save money, as there are frequent discounts. Costco Tires come with a five-year road hazard warranty, and they will replace or repair tires damaged during standard legal vehicle operation.

Tire Rack has a similar situation called Tire Road Hazard Protection. The company will replace the current tire up to $599 and offer protection for 24 months from the date of purchase. They will also reimburse you up to $40 for flat tire repairs. I’ve used Tire Rack’s Road Hazard Protection program, which was really easy.

With both of these stores, you can have the new tires shipped directly to your home or a shop. There are suggested shops on the website that make installation easy. For those who want this process to be quick and painless, this is usually a good route. Mounting the tires doesn’t take long, and you can be in and out on your lunch break. Plus, you might make a new friend in the process. Having a trusted mechanic is always a bonus.

If you are replacing tires on your vehicle, you can use those to find the right ones. Every tire will have important information on the side that you can reference. For instance, a typical tire might read P215/65 R15. Your new tires will need to be the same.

You’ll find the tire type, which is most likely for a passenger vehicle, so you will see the letter P. The next set of numbers, 215, indicates the tire width in millimeters. After that, the 65 indicates the aspect ratio. R is for Radial, which means the layers run radially across the tire. And finally, the 15 stands for how large your wheels are. In this case, these wheels are 15”. You’ll want to jot this information down or take a photo of it to get similar tires.

On Costco Tires and Tire Rack, you can search by tire size or vehicle type to find the correct set for you. If you are only replacing two tires, you’ll want to find the same tires, if possible. Replacing the full set gives you more wiggle room, but you’ll still need the same specs for the tires you remove.

Pro Tip: Don’t Be Afraid to Shop Around

We compare prices on a lot of everyday items before making a purchase; why not new tires, too? If you have time, shopping around is always a good idea. Compare the prices of OEM tires from your dealership to the ones available on Costco Tires or Tire Rack. Sign up for emails to get discounts, especially around holidays. You can often get a discount buying four tires at a time versus just two but don’t wait too long to replace your tires.

Tires are integral to keeping you and your vehicle safe on the road, so be sure to check them out periodically. It is a good idea to check the life of your new tires when you do routine maintenance, like oil changes and coolant flushes. That way, if you need to replace your current set, you have some time to shop around and have them shipped.

How Important Are Your Tires? How to Make the Right Tire Choice https://agirlsguidetocars.com/make-the-right-tire-choice/ Thu, 15 Feb 2024 12:00:57 +0000 https://agirlsguidetocars.com/?p=632216

Here’s How to Know You Know

Just imagine… you’re driving with your baby sitter in the front seat, your kids tucked tightly into their car seats and you approach an intersection and … slide right into the middle of it. Oncoming cars fly by you like a chase scene in an action movie. Luckily, none of them hits you and you’re able to go on with your day, save the spooky feeling left ringing in your bones. You could have all been seriously hurt, or worse.

For me, that was a snowy day many years ago. The crazy thing is, I didn’t even think to have my tires checked. It was snowing and I chalked it up to ice on the road. But I was the only one sliding; every other car on the road was just fine. Luckily, not long afterward my mechanic recommended I get new tires. I quickly agreed and bought them on the spot.

My first mistake was that I didn’t know the condition of my tires. My second mistake was that I should have been in control of the situation. Even though I got new tires, did I get the right ones for my driving style and conditions? Did I pay too much? Would they wear too quickly? All questions I didn’t think about because … I didn’t know.

Well, now I do, and if you keep reading, so will you.

Understanding What You Need to Make the Right Tire Choice

I’m sure the service technician at the car dealer meant well when he sold me a set of tires. I’m also sure he made a nice commission and probably didn’t care much about what mattered to me in a new set of tires. What I should have done was a bit of research and then look at independent retailers such as those listed with eBay Motors. From there, you can look for what you need, as you would when buying a pair of sneakers or a vacuum cleaner.

Some things to consider include:

  • Size recommended by the manufacturer
  • Type of tire — all season, touring, winter, run flat
  • Speed and load rating — if you do a lot of highway driving with a car full of kids, or if you tow heavy equipment, this is important
  • Length of wear/warranty — how long do you want your tires to last?
  • Location of installer — you can buy tires and have them shipped to an installer near you or in some cases, have an installer come to you

The service technician at my dealership didn’t ask me any of these questions, which is why I’m pretty sure I didn’t get the right tires for my car.

Next: Choose the Right Tires for Your Driving Situation(s)

When buying tires, ask yourself: What conditions do you mostly drive in, and which conditions are most challenging or possibly even dangerous?Cold, snowy, perhaps icy weather? Rainy, slick pavement? Seasonal mud and gravel that spill onto the road? A gravel driveway or trails? Steep hills? Occasional floods and standing water on the street?

Where I lived in Connecticut it was all of the above for a lot of the year. Now that I live in Texas I don’t need to worry so much about snowy or icy conditions, but rain-slick streets, mud, gravel and floods are common.

All Wheel Drive Vs Front Wheel Drive

If you ask me, everyone needs AWD. Though that’s not necessarily true and AWD can mean an extra $2,000 on the price of a new car. For most driving situations, FWD is fine, even in snow and mud. Typically front wheels get a good amount of traction with the weight of the engine and the vehicle.

But for drivers who face hilly, slick, icy, snowy or gravely surfaces, all wheel drive offers added capability. It ensures that the rear wheels are turning along with the front wheels so you have as much traction on the rear wheels as you do the front wheels.

Winter Tires Vs All Season Tires

All season tires are sort of like a perfect barn jacket: great for most seasons, but probably too much or too little in extreme hot or cold weather. All season tires on an AWD vehicle, however, are probably good even in very snowy climates. But with FWD or RWD alone, you probably need winter tires.

I was able to try out all season tires and compare them to winter tires in a front wheel drive Toyota Camry and in a rear wheel drive Porsche 911. The Camry actually did OK with the all seasons as long as I went slow, picked spots where I thought the snow wasn’t too deep and I was likely to get stuck, and kept my momentum steady. But with winter tires, I was able to drive through anything, which of course, was more fun. It made me think of slow-going on the highway when a storm has just rolled in but the plows are not out yet.

Rear Wheel Drive with Winter Tires

Even more fun was the Porsche 911 with winter tires. I think of a 911 like I do a great piece of David Yurman jewelry: If you make the investment, you should wear it; don’t simply save it for fancy events. If you buy a Porsche (or, Miata, or Supra, or BMW 3 series) and live in a snowy climate, invest in winter tires. You’ll never have to leave your baby home because of the weather and you’ll be completely capable on snowy roads.

All Wheel Drive with a Heavy Load

This one surprised me. We took a lap in a Ford F-150 equipped with all season tires and with a heavy load in the bed. It was fine, but slow going; I could feel the load pull the weight of the rear end of the truck, even though all four wheels were gripping the snow quite well. For occasional winter driving, it was capable.

All Wheel Drive with Winter Tires

But for more challenging climates, such as regular ski weekends, frequent storms and those days when you have to run errands as the snow piles up, I’d feel much more secure and comfortable with winter tires. On the  winter tires lap I was able to drive much faster and with much more control.

When Winter Tires are the Right Choice

Learning that drivers in Quebec are required by law to swap their all season tires for winter tires was an eye-opener. The idea that risking your safety and that of others isn’t an option just makes sense. But, Quebec gets a lot of snow and winter is a long season. But do winter tires make sense for everyone who lives in a snowy climate? Maybe, and maybe not. You should consider them if:

  • Winter temperatures, October to March, are typically at or below 40 F
  • Snow, sleet and ice are a regular occurrence
  • Terrain is hilly or uneven
  • You don’t always have the choice to stay off the road in bad weather
  • You are responsible for the safety of others

Winter tires should not be driven in warmer temperatures; they’ll wear quickly and end up just as unsafe in warm weather as all season tires are in winter weather.

The good news is that most drivers buy a set of winter tires and swap them in the fall and spring, meaning each set of tires lasts twice as long.

You can buy tires online and have them shipped to an installer

Don’t Be Like Me. Get the Right Tires

Back in the day buying tires was not easy or fun. Now, you can buy on line and have them shipped to your installer or to your home. You can pick exactly what you want and need and you can shop price. And you can be sure you get exactly what you need so you and your precious cargo are safe on the road. You’re welcome.

Disclosure: I was a guest of eBay Motors for a winter driving event. Travel and accommodations were provided but I own all my opinions and scary situations.

What Drives Her… to Buy a Car. Or To Walk Away? https://agirlsguidetocars.com/what-drives-her-to-buy-a-car-or-to-walk-away/ Wed, 14 Feb 2024 12:00:38 +0000 https://agirlsguidetocars.com/?p=632198 You Know, and Now, So Does the Auto Industry

Do your palms sweat when you walk into a car dealership? Have you been driving the same tin box on wheels since the early ‘90s because you dread the thought of buying a new car? And if you are set on buying a car, do you feel completely overwhelmed by all the options out there?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you’re in good company with a lot of women.

Women influence 85% of car-buying decisions, so the automotive industry knows just how important we are when it comes to selling cars. That’s why they’ve spent the last several years striving to understand what women are looking for. (Ever noticed how many female product specialists there are at auto shows? That’s on purpose.)

More than anything, they want to know: What drives women to buy cars?

A group of female executives recently met for a  discussion moderate by Kathy Gilbert of CDK Global to share data and research on female car buyers at the 2024 Chicago Auto Show. And the answers were pretty eye-opening.

Women Don’t Want to Be Pressured to Buy a Car

If you’ve ever wondered why auto shows are important, panelist Amy Emmatty, the Chief Revenue Officer of Productions Plus, shed some light on this subject. Emmatty’s company surveyed over 2,700 attendees from the 2023 Chicago Auto Show, and when it came to listing their favorite part of the experience, seeing the latest/greatest vehicles was the top choice.

But 28% of men and 34% of women said that “no pressure salespeople” was the second-highest draw. That’s the beauty of an auto show — you can’t buy a car directly from any of the brand representatives, so you don’t have to worry about any pushy sales tactics.

But They Appreciate Experts Who Can Answer Questions

This next one might be slightly more surprising. When the survey asked how women preferred to learn about new automotive technology, the answer wasn’t what Emmatty expected. Just 29% of women said they preferred to learn online while 55% said they wanted to learn in-person at the auto show. That says something about the importance of face-to-face interaction when it comes to buying a car.

“Clearly online information is a resource, but it can’t just be online,” Emmatty says. “It’s about that interaction, that experience here at the show.”

Being Able to See Multiple Brands in One Place Helps

There are only so many Saturdays in a year, and nobody’s got time to run around to every different dealership in the city to compare the top brands and models — least of all, busy women. So it’s not surprising that one of the main reasons people come to auto shows is to shop with multiple brands in one place. 70% of the survey respondents said this was true for them.)

In one section of the convention center you can climb inside a Kia EV9 and then 30 steps later, you might be scoping out a Grand Highlander in the Toyota zone. Ah, but maybe you want to compare those interiors with the Chevrolet Suburban? No worries! That’s just on the other side of the room.

The way to a woman’s heart? Convenience.

Knowledge Can Curb Anxiety

Buying a car is no small purchase, and that’s probably why there are a lot of emotions tied to the process. Emmatty shared that 40% of survey respondents planned to buy a car within the next year, but a majority of the female respondents were apprehensive, nervous or anxious about it. If you fall into that category yourself, Emmatty has a suggestion.

“If you’re a little anxious, you’re a little apprehensive, maybe you need to learn more about the product you’re buying and that can help ease some of those feelings,” she said.

For example, panelist Trisha Jung, Senior Director for EV Strategy and Transformation at Nissan, shared that only a third of women (33%) are considering an EV for their next vehicle. But that may be due to a knowledge gap about the product. 34% of women said they weren’t confident in their knowledge of EVs, more than half (53%) had never been inside an EV and almost half (47%) said that they thought EV charging sounded difficult.

Jung’s advice for women who fall into any of these categories? Do your research.

“We as women, we really value information from outside sources,” she said. “We’re going to do everything we can as a company to give you information, but I also think there’s a lot of great reputable sources through social media — other people that you can see that represent your lifestyle.”

If something appears to work for someone with a similar lifestyle, maybe it will work for you, too, Jung says. And sometimes you just have to give something a try before you know if it’s the right fit.

“That’s been a big thing with electric vehicles all along. Once somebody experiences it…they love it.”

And, of course, auto shows are another valuable resource for gaining information.

“As you walk around the show, ask questions,” Kathy Gilbert advised. “Take a moment to really look at what’s there, even if it’s not (a car) that’s on your bucket list.”

Times Are Changing — Hopefully For the Better

Rest assured that the automotive industry has and will continue to make improvements to ease your car-buying stresses. In everything they do, they’re keeping you — their key influencers — in mind.

“Even the way that we integrate our female product geniuses at an auto show, the way that we employ women at an auto show, has changed substantially,” panelist Trudy Hardy, Vice President and Region Americas Head of BMW Motorrad explained.

“We (as women) research differently, we shop differently, we expect different experiences… and it’s important that we deliver on those and that we make a woman feel comfortable along the entire purchase path.”

Nissan, in particular, is a good example of a brand that’s leading the charge to make trying, buying and owning an EV easier. Recognizing that women were anxious about how and where to charge these vehicles, they partnered with public charging networks to increase access to charging stations. They also hired women designers to help create a lounge-like feeling on the inside of an EV, complete with big windows, an open/airy interior, a moonroof, warm colors and soft-touch surfaces to enhance the cabin experience.

“We want to make sure that the customer is getting everything they’re looking for in their purchase,” Jung said.

So, as you venture out to buy a car this year or sometime in the future, take comfort in the fact that you’re not the only one learning as you go. Over time, you can expect even more female retailers and product specialists to crop up, and they’ll be ready to assist you with whatever questions and needs you may have.

“Education is key for shoppers and also for us as leaders with where we are in automotive,” Hardy said.

Who knows? Maybe one day you will be the one answering all the questions and pointing others in the right direction.

Save Money in the Long Run With the Most Reliable Cars https://agirlsguidetocars.com/most-reliable-cars-save-money/ Tue, 13 Feb 2024 12:00:53 +0000 https://agirlsguidetocars.com/?p=632074 Spend More Now For Fewer Costs (and Headaches) Later

Reliability is a buzzword you often hear when car shopping. And it makes sense: buying a reliable car is one of the more important factors to consider. There are a number of brands that are are known for reliability, such as Toyota, Lexus, Acura, Honda, and Subaru, and many others that are pretty good as long as they are well maintained. But reliability isn’t all about the magic of the brand; there are some other important pieces of the reliability puzzle to ensure your new car lasts through the miles.

Consumer Reports compiles much of the data used to determine the most reliable cars from actual drivers of new and used vehicles. Drivers of the brands previously mentioned report fewer problems throughout the first few years of ownership. Regardless of brand, hybrid vehicles and sedans have also earned a reputation for reliability.

And, even the most reliable cars can end up leaving you stranded if they are not properly maintained with regular oil changes, tire rotations and following the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule.

The calculations can be complicated, but finding a good car or SUV is actually pretty easy. Below are some good vehicles that have a history of reliability, reasonable ownership costs, and solid resale value.

The rugged, yet sleek Toyota 4Runner

Renowned Brands Known for Their Reliability

Vehicles like the Toyota 4Runner and Highlander have a pretty stellar history of reliability, cost of ownership, and resale value. Toyota’s midsize SUVs are known for lasting 200,000 miles or more without too many issues. Maintenance is pretty routine and cheap, especially since it is a Toyota. On top of that, the resale value remains high for Toyota SUVs, thanks to that reputation for reliability. The Highlander is a more family-focused vehicle with plenty of new technology, helping it score an IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus award. The 4Runner is more rugged and earned good safety scores from the NHTSA. Both have plenty of space and check all of the important factors listed here.

This year, Toyota also launched the 2024 Grand Highlander. Utilizing the familiar name of the dependable two-row Highlander, this family SUV has more space and a third row. Even though it is new to the market, Toyota is banking on that long history the smaller  model has with drivers already.

Subaru is another brand with many models that excel in reliability and safety. When it comes to the IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus and NHTSA five-star safety rating, you’ll often see a few Subaru models. The Subaru Crosstrek is one of the more reliable new models, along with the well-loved Forester model. The Forester and some other models like the Outback and Ascent also landed on Kelley Blue Book’s list of lowest cost-to-own vehicles for a few years. Drivers tend to hold on to Subaru vehicles for a long time, which is another testament to the quality of the brand.

Honda, and its luxury division, Acura, both earned high scores from owners for reliability. Honda has a lot of popular cars and SUVs that are known to run for a long time without much fuss. In fact, the company states in its warranty that owners can drive 100,000 miles before any major maintenance is necessary. The compact Honda CR-V and smaller HR-V have been on the market for many years and have proved to be dependable models. Maintenance is a little more expensive on Acura vehicles, but you’ll find most Honda models have affordable ownership costs.

The XSE Hybrid badge

The Reliability of Hybrid Vehicles and Sedans Makes Them a Compelling Choice

There are also plenty of hybrid vehicles to choose from that come from these reliable brands. Hybrid powertrains have actually had 26% less problems than gasoline vehicles over the last few years. The Toyota Camry Hybrid, RAV4 Prime, RAV4 Hybrid, Corolla Hybrid, and Highlander Hybrid all have high scores of reliability and low ownership costs. These cars and SUVs tend to offer the best of both worlds when it comes to fuel economy, using electric when possible and gasoline for the other times. That helps makes a tank of gas go further, saving money in the long run. These models tend to cost a little more upfront, but make up for it down the line.

It’s worth noting that this does not apply to plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles. Over the past few years, these powertrains have proven to have more issues than traditional gasoline vehicles, though they run on newer technology and there are fewer of them on the road than hybrids.

Sedans like the Toyota Camry, Corolla, and Honda Civic are everywhere for a reason. These best sellers are good on gas, spacious enough for most situations, and are just generally easy to own. Whether you buy new or used, these models should serve you well past 100,000 miles without much fuss. Just make sure you get those oil changes!

Lexus GX 550.

Toyota and Lexus are Trusted Starting Points for Quality Vehicles

Realistically, Toyota and Lexus have the most models to offer that are also dependable. Some of the highest-scoring Lexus models include the UX SUV, ES sedan (in both hybrid and gasoline) along with the ever-reliable Lexus RX and NX, which both come in hybrid and gasoline models. Lexus managed to have many vehicles with high reliability scores, proving to be a top brand for new cars in 2023.

For reliable Toyota vehicles, you really can’t go wrong with any of the models that have been around the block a few times. The Camry, Prius, 4Runner, and RAV4 come with reasonable price points and inexpensive maintenance, which makes for drivers who tend to be satisfied with these vehicles. Plus, resale value tends to be better on vehicles with proven reliability histories.

Reliability and the Cost Of Ownership

The great thing about a highly reliable car is that it should have a higher resale value, But But before counting those chickens (or buying a car that is considered reliable), you’ll need to consider the cost of ownership and how it impacts its value.

The cost of ownership includes things like maintenance, repairs, and even fuel. Basically, the money you are putting into the vehicle while it’s in your care. It can even include insurance, fees, and insurance. There are many reliable cars in the luxury segment that check all of the boxes, but come with higher maintenance and insurance costs. For the resale value, you’ll want to consider what you might get for it in the future. You might find a great vehicle that fits all of your needs but the brand is notorious for having poor resale value. So it can end up costing you in the long run.

If Reliability Matters to You, Don’t Get Swayed By a Pretty Face

Our heads can be turned by sexy sports car or the power players on the road, but those can be the ones that don’t last as long or cost more to maintain. So, taking reliability factors into consideration now might net you a better deal in the long run.

Also, avoiding a car that’s known to have problems in the first few years of ownership is a good idea, and skipping a vehicle with high maintenance costs is just a smart move.

But the good news is, there are many models to choose from that check all of these boxes. And, they can be pretty and powerful too, as long as you take care of them.

It’s that time of year: The days are long, dark, and cold; indoor activities are the perfect way to bide our time until Spring. It’s also the perfect time to head to the auto show and shop for a new car.

The Chicago Auto Show, which runs from February 10-19, or one of more than 40 shows around the country, provide the ideal place to shop, compare and learn.

Going to the Car Show? What You Need to Know – And What to Wear

The multimedia system includes a 12.4-inch touch screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Photo Allison BellWhat Can You Learn at an Auto Show?

Technology in new cars is increasingly important and does a lot more. At any exhibit, you’ll be able to ask the product specialists to demonstrate how something works, from connecting your Apple iPhone to CarPlay to using voice assistance to turning off the screen beeps in a car.

You can also get a look at the head-up display, rear seat entertainment, and vehicle settings.

I particularly like being able to try putting the second and third-row seats up and down, climbing into the 3rd row and trying it out for size, and seeing how comfortable a car is for my passengers. I can see if I like the position of the air vents, USB ports, and cup holders — which are not all created equal.

And I can see paint colors in person — which is so helpful when it comes to deciding what I really want.

Here is a rundown of what you should see at the 2024 Chicago Auto Show— or an auto show in your town this year.

Nissan Ariya “Pole to Pole”

Nissan and brave souls Julie and Chris Ramsey just put more than 18,000 miles on the electric Ariya on a “Pole to Pole” trek in which the Ramseys drove from the North Pole to the South Pole. In an all-electric car.

I know you have questions — I did. How did they get through it, especially in places with no civilization, not to mention, electrical outlets? They brought their own coffee maker that they plugged into the Ariya, which gave me confidence in their sanity. Then, they brought diesel and solar generators to power their systems and the car when electricity wasn’t available. They worked with people along the way, and they carefully monitored the health and capability of the Ariya. It was a champ, they said, and honestly, it looked amazing for having just survived such a trip. I’m not sure I would look as good.

Ford Mustang Mach-E Rally and Bronze Edition

Just when you thought the Ford Mustang Mach-E couldn’t get any cooler, Ford introduced an off-road edition and a Bronze package. The Rally edition was inspired by Ford’s stellar performance in the Rebelle Rally, the 1,500-mile off-road rally that takes place each fall in California. It’s modified for off-roading with a beefier rear spoiler, all-terrain tires and wheels, and more power — 480 HP and AWD from a dual motor power setup. The Bronze package showcased a new color palette with an iridescent bronze-hued green paint and bronze details. Shown with the extended range battery and all-wheel drive, it’s the prettiest Mustang Mach-E on the road.

Kia Carnival

Visitors to the Chicago Auto Show will be the first to see the new Kia Carnival, which is now a hybrid! We love this large, luxe, comfortable minivan— they call it a multipurpose vehicle — with reclining seats, rear seat entertainment, and more. And we really like the look and feel of this van; it’s long, tall, and square with a more elegant rear end than we’re used to with minivans. Just across the space from the Carnival is the Kia EV9, the brand’s all-electric 3-row SUV. Climb in and try it on for size.

Honda Prologue

One of my must-sees at the show was the Honda Prologue. This new electric car from Honda is a collab with General Motors, which provides the battery and power train. Inside, it’s all Honda: the new Honda multimedia system, vegan leather upholstery, and, thanks to the battery pack under the car’s floor, a nice wide rear seat with tons of legroom. It’s said to get about 300 miles to a charge and have about 340 HP, so it should be fun and go far.

If you’re looking for a dream-worthy, drool-worthy SUV, head to Lexus to see the GX. We just took a test drive and are so impressed; it’s like having a 5-star sherpa to get you up the mountain, with all the comforts and capability.

BMW X2

We’re thrilled to see BMW at the Chicago Auto Show this year. Several of their top models are on display, including the re-designed X5 and 5 Series sedan. And, you can get a glimpse of the X2, the fully redesigned compact sport-back SUV. We haven’t seen much on this one yet as it’s still in the prototype stage, but it’s on our top list of cars we are really excited to drive this year.

Mazda CX-90

Mazda crushed the competition this year with the brand new CX-90 3-row SUV that, with 6, 7, or 8-passenger options and several power train options, lets buyers pick the amount of luxury or capability they want. It’s a fun and easy-to-drive SUV with an elevated sense of modern elegance, so it’s no surprise it’s so popular.

There Are Puppies at Subaru

And, of course, Subaru is turning the show over to the dogs again this year. You can leave your information and head into the paddock to pet the puppies and, if you’d like to, adopt one. They are simply adorable, so you may want to double-check your willpower before heading over.

Also Worth A Look

Outside the convention center, there are actual test drives, so you can get behind the wheel of your dream car and take it for a spin. And when you get tired and hungry, around the corner is Pizanos, Woven & Bound in the Marriott Marquis, or the Arc Bar at the Hyatt, which is attached to the convention center. I can recommend all 3— I tried them all.

And then, start your actual shopping for a new car this spring. Think about taking the plunge on an electric car, or go for a gas-powered car that’ll create the ideal environment for you to stay warm and cozy the rest of the winter; then let the sunshine in and the fresh air rustle through your hair in the Spring. It’ll be here before you know it.

The 2025 Chevy Equinox Dazzles with Looks, Tech and Trim https://agirlsguidetocars.com/the-2025-chevy-equinox-dazzles-with-looks-tech-and-trim/ Wed, 24 Jan 2024 12:00:38 +0000 https://agirlsguidetocars.com/?p=631698 Chevy Freshens the Game with the Redesign of their Best-Selling SUV, the 2025 Chevy Equinox

This week, Chevrolet continued their streak of redesigns with the unveiling of the 2025 Chevrolet Equinox.  In the past 18 months Chevy has refreshed their entire SUV lineup. All of which have been met with positive reviews. Especially the 2024 Traverse – which consumers are still waiting for.

I was skeptical about how “refreshed” the Equinox would look.  The previous gen isn’t my favorite in exterior styling, and the interior seemed a bit out of date for my taste, especially compared to some of the competitors in this segment, like the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Hyundai Santa Fe that offer vehicles with more power and fuel economy.

Imagine my surprise when I walked into a staged space and saw a “Baby Traverse” with a bold new look that immediately caught the eye.

It’s safe to say this two-row SUV has received a major glow-up for the 2025 model year. At this point, it’s unknown if the price will be comparable to the 2024 Equinox.  (Chevrolet will release pricing as they get closer to production.)

The redesign has new tech, a fresh new design, AND an all-new trim level called Activ, and I’m going to tell you all about it.

The first-ever Equinox Activ trim level is inspired by drivers whose journeys don’t stop just because the pavement ends.  The Activ trim has a unique front end with styling that has an “off-road look.”  The 2025 Equinox Activ comes with all-terrain tires on 17” aluminum wheels. The interior is sporty and comfortable, with seats covered in Evotex and sueded microfiber, which feels more comfortable than expected. Notably, drivers will have the option to upgrade to a two-tone finish with an available white roof.

There will also be two additional trim levels offered: LT (entry-level trim with mainstream comfort and convenience) and RS (featuring sportier mirrors and badging, 19” wheels with the option to upgrade to 20” wheels, and two-tone red and blue interior stitching.)

Equinox Will Have More Standard Safety Features than Ever Before

This (4th) generation of Equinox will have more standard safety tech with Chevy Safety Assist, Teen Driver, and Intersection Automatic Emergency Braking across ALL trim levels. (Teen Driver3 is a technology that allows parents to activate customizable vehicle settings and view their teen’s driving performance through a new Connected Teen Driver feature in the myChevrolet mobile app.)

Additional standard safety features include a side bicyclist alert, a rear vision camera, a rear cross-traffic alert with braking, a rear seat reminder, park assist, and enhanced lane keep assistance.  It also included adaptive cruise control and a lane change alert with a blind-spot monitor.

Refreshed tech feels more current to competitor’s standards.

There’s an upgraded 11-inch driver information center (the place where you see your gauges and MPH) and an 11.3-inch color touchscreen (also known as the multimedia area) that offers wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto.

Chevy emphasized that the new screen is very intuitive and easy to use.

No more clunky gear shifter.

2025 Chevy Equinox

One thing I’m excited about in the 2025 Chevy Equinox is the electronic gear shifter that has been placed on the column (like a turn signal stick.) Moving it here really opens things up and gives the feeling of having more legroom and front cabin space.  The best part is that you get a pass-through (a little hidey hole in the console to put something valuable like a tablet or hide a small purse out of sight.)

Toasty Buns Will Be Trending

For the first time ever, every 2025 Chevy Equinox will have heated seats and a heated steering wheel! This is HUGE. Chevy listened to consumer feedback and studied the features that were most often ordered or requested. So, they’ve included it as a standard for everyone in the 2025 Equinox.

Enough Power for Everyday in the 2025 Chevy Equinox

Under the hood, the 2025 Chevy Equinox will have a refreshed 1.5 L turbo with CVT (a continuously variable transmission) in front-wheel drive versions or an 8-speed automatic transmission with available all-wheel drive vehicles. It will offer 175 horsepower and 203 lb.-ft of torque with AWD.

For both RS and Activ trims, drivers get selectable drive modes (by using this dial in the center), so you will be able to toggle between normal and snow drive modes on front-wheel drive vehicles.

It wouldn’t be considered an SUV (sport utility vehicle) if it couldn’t tow. The new Equinox FWD versions are trailering-capable up to 800 lbs, and AWD versions can accommodate up to 1500 lbs.

Bolder Design from Chevy

The new design is inspired by ever-popular Chevy trucks. The SUV is both wider and taller. Borrowing from Chevy truck DNA, you also have squared wheel wells.

Equinox also sports a new bold grille that also feels wider and more substantial. The RS grille has attractive dark chrome accents to complete the look. As a matter of fact, each trim level (LT, Activ, and RS each has a unique front-end design.)

There are full LED headlights and taillights which stand out with their sleek design.

In the back, you have a boxier shape, which looks impressive and gives you more function in the cargo space. Speaking of cargo space, you have tons of it and a hidden subfloor that allows for additional storage out of sight. If that’s not enough, you can fold down your 60/40 split-bench second-row seats to have a total of 63.5 cubic feet of storage.

With its new bold look, the 2025 Chevy Equinox is sure to appeal to new buyers who may not have had this particular vehicle on their shortlist.  Pricing is expected to be released closer to production starting, which should be later this year.

Why I Bought the Acura MDX Advance https://agirlsguidetocars.com/why-i-bought-the-acura-mdx-advance/ Fri, 19 Jan 2024 12:00:25 +0000 https://agirlsguidetocars.com/?p=631488 Size Matters When Peace of Mind is Priceless; that’s why I Purchased the 2024 Acura MDX

Leaving you on a cliffhanger about my next car decision, I finally made a choice. While my love for the Acura RDX is undeniable, practicality led me to the 2024 Acura MDX with the Advance package. This premium three-row SUV, wrapped in Liquid Carbon metallic exterior paint and adorned with espresso-colored premium leather inside, signifies a significant upgrade for my family.

This larger 3-row SUV, with seating that accommodates up to 7 passengers, isn’t just a step up in size; it’s a leap towards more technology, peace of mind during family drives, and a touch of added luxury. The cost of this upgrade, with an MSRP of $64,100, may seem steep, but it’s a move I made willingly for the enhanced driving experience and the perks of a premium SUV. And yes, this is the first time I’ve ever been brand loyal – a testament to my experience with the brand.

The Evolution of My Family’s Needs, and Mine

Before getting my 2021 RDX, the idea of a larger, three-row SUV like the MDX seemed unnecessary. Our family of three didn’t immediately require the extra space, and trips with extended family members were sporadic. The RDX served its purpose well during those initial years, but as our family dynamics shifted, it became apparent that a more spacious vehicle was needed.

The arrival of our second child after a nine-year journey through secondary infertility marked a turning point. Sibling squabbles in the car became a norm, and the limitations of the RDX’s two-row configuration were increasingly evident. The quest for a larger SUV was set in motion. While I did test-drive a pretty capable minivan, it didn’t suit my style. A test drive in the MDX Type S Advance provided a clear answer: I had to have it.

Choosing the Acura MDX: A Blend of Power and Practicality

Opting for the MDX, despite its larger size, didn’t mean sacrificing the driving experience. In fact, the MDX managed to retain the sedan-like driving feel thanks to its SH-AWD (Super Handling All Wheel Drive). It also provides more power with its 10-speed automatic V6 engine. My 2024 MDX has more technology and convenience features than my 2021 RDX, making it a seamless transition. While the allure of the Type S Advance’s 355 horsepower, massaging seats, and adaptive air was tempting, the MDX Advance package struck the perfect balance, providing all the necessary upgrades I was looking for.

Picking the Perfect Color: Sticking With What’s Familiar

Despite initially wanting the Phantom Violet Pearl, logistical challenges (like it being 200 miles away) prompted me to reconsider. Staying true to my exterior paint preference, I chose Liquid Carbon Metallic, a dark metallic gray that gives the MDX a menacing appearance. With a full-time job, mom duties, and side ventures keeping me busy, regular car washes are a luxury. While mobile car washes offer convenience, the associated expenses can add up quickly. The Liquid Carbon Metallic shade became my preference for its forgiving quality amid the inevitable dirt of daily life. In contrast, the leather interior showcases a captivating espresso hue, deviating from my usual choice of black or dark gray. For me, this combination emanates a luxurious appeal.

Must-Have Upgrades in the Acura MDX

The decision to upgrade went beyond just seeking a larger vehicle; it aimed to address the deficiencies of my RDX. While my RDX, equipped with the Technology package, heated leather seats, a panoramic sunroof, and a backup camera, it fell short in providing certain conveniences I knew I couldn’t do without in my next car. The MDX emerged as the perfect solution, seamlessly rectifying these gaps with lots of specific features that conveniently enhance my driving experience in my family SUV:

  • Heated steering wheel – not having this made me realize I hate touching a cold steering wheel while driving
  • The 360-degree surround-view camera offers a view of my surroundings
  • Remote start from the key fob versus the AcuraLink App
  • Power folding mirrors

Acura MDX Advanced Features

The MDX Advance package boasts a range of features that not only enhance my driving experience, but also the comfort of my passengers from young to old. These are the features in my Acura MDX that I find particularly appealing:

  • A 10.5-inch head-up display provides clear visibility of navigation, speed limit, and the speedometer, enhancing my overall driving experience.
  • The ELS Studio 3D premium audio system with 16 speakers offers an unparalleled audio experience. My husband was amazed by the sound and the number of speakers. It’s worth noting that newer models are transitioning to the Bang & Olufsen system.
  • Tri-climate controls are a practical addition, catering to my preferences as a woman of a certain age while also addressing the varying temperature preferences of my husband and oldest daughter, thus minimizing debates over car temperature.
  • Second-row heated outboard seats contribute to passenger comfort, which is especially appreciated by my older daughter, who tends to run cold.
  • The MDX Advance provides multiple charging options, including a wireless charging pad, USB-A and USB-C ports in the first row, additional USB-A ports in the second row, and even an AC outlet in the second row for added convenience.
  • The 16-way power seats with power lumbar, thigh extension, and side bolsters offer superior comfort during longer drives, providing unexpected relief. The support is akin to a comforting hug, a welcome relief, especially needed for moms after a long and demanding day.
  • Ventilated seats, which I experienced in the Type S Advance, are anticipated to be a welcome feature during the upcoming summer, enhancing overall driving comfort.
  • The three-position front passenger seat memory, a feature my husband appreciates, is a notable addition he wishes his Volvo XC90 had.
  • Iconic drive ambient LED cabin lighting, available in 27 color themes, creates a visually delightful atmosphere, adding an element of surprise for my youngest daughter during pickups from daycare.
  • The power lift tailgate with hands-free access and walk-away close proves convenient, especially when juggling my (soon to be) four year old, purse, and other items.
  • The LED outer door handle lights and interior lights automatically illuminate when the car is approached, enhancing both security and aesthetics.

Storage Solutions and Family Comfort in the Acura MDX

Storage has always been a standout feature in my RDX, and the MDX lived up to expectations. The MDX’s thoughtful storage solutions contribute to maintaining an organized and clutter-free interior, enhancing the overall driving experience for my family. Drawing from my experience with the RDX, where storage was a notable highlight:

  • The familiar hidden storage in the cargo area, cherished in my RDX, made a welcome return in my new MDX. This space serves as a discreet hideaway for gifts, ensuring my family remains unaware of their surprises.
  • The large center console is impressive. Within this spacious compartment, I stow away an extra pair of shades, a clean microfiber cloth for impromptu fingerprint cleanups, and a secret storage tray. Ingeniously, my kids are yet to crack the code to open it, making it an ideal spot to conceal my favorite candies.
  • Despite the MDX lacking the floating console that was a notable feature in my RDX, previously utilized for my wallet on purse-free outings, I’ve adjusted by placing my purse strategically on the floor, either in front of the passenger or behind when my husband occupies the front seat.

Dealership Experience: A Hassle-Free Approach

Dealership experiences had tested my patience in the past, leading me to discover the ease and efficiency of using a broker. Going this route had proven to be a breeze, ensuring not only a stress-free transaction but also a high likelihood of securing a favorable deal. I was able to get the 2024 Acura MDX Advance at 9% off of the MSRP. Add to that loyalty incentives and trade-in of my low-mileage 2021 RDX, and it was a sweet deal.

This Just Might Be My Forever Car

With a little over 1,000 miles on my 2024 Acura MDX, I find myself content and surprisingly contemplating this as my “forever” car. Despite a monthly payment increase of nearly $200 and a slightly lower fuel economy compared to my RDX, the peace of mind, premium features, and the joy of driving a sporty SUV that mirrors a sedan have made the investment worthwhile.

The MDX stands as a testament to Acura’s commitment to blending luxury, practicality, and performance, ensuring it meets not just my preferences but also the evolving needs of my growing family.
