We live in the northernmost part of the state of Texas with the Red River’s treeline visible from our driveway in the winter months. To say our little community is rural would be an understatement – in this part of the country, there are more tractors and ORVs on the road than trucks and cars most days.

While cattle ranches and hay pastures surround us, our little slice of heaven is just under 4 acres. We raise chickens, garden, and dream of planting an orchard. Of everyone in our neighborhood, we’re probably the only ones who don’t own an ORV or ATV of some kind, so when my kids heard we’d get to experience one for a while, they were ecstatic. And so was I as I imagined how useful a 2023 Polaris Ranger Crew XP 1000 Texas Edition could be on a mini-farm like ours.

Toy, Workhorse, or Both?

At first glance, the 2023 Polaris Ranger Crew XP 1000 Texas Edition looks like a rancher’s dream. It has a mini truck bed that dumps (perfect for hauling bags of buckets of feed, mineral blocks, or fencing tools) and a winch for pulling calves or getting one’s lawnmower out of the pond. (Don’t ask.) Powered by a 999cc ProStar engine, which produces 82 horsepower, plus a ground clearance of 14 inches, the RANGER XP 1000 is capable of towing 2,500 lb or hauling 1600lb over uneven terrain or through low water crossings with water up to the floorboards.

But is it fun? Our family says yes, yes, yes! While we don’t have a ton of land here to go rip-roaring around on, we did get to take the RANGER out to some family land that has been vacant for 20 years. It’s overgrown with weeds, saplings, and decent-sized cedar trees.

The Ranger XP 1000 let us explore safely thanks to the seat belts and mesh doors, and we had no trouble at all with the rough ground and tall weeds. Around our fields at home, we got to experience the Ranger’s exhilarating speed and engine noise and were able to use the ORV to talk to our kids about ORV and ATV safety – something we hadn’t really taught them or discussed but should have, considering many of their friends have these vehicles on their farms.

One of the safety features I really appreciated was the regulator that keeps the Ranger from operating at high speeds if seatbelts aren’t buckled. One of my sons was only allowed to drive the ORV in low gear, which kept the speed down, but my oldest could drive it fast IF seatbelts were worn and all safety measures were taken.

The best part? The XP 1000 is a six-seater, so everyone could come along for the fun!

How We Used the ORV on Our Mini-Farm

Our first job for the Ranger XP 1000 was hauling over 500 square feet of vinyl plank flooring I had purchased for a home renovation project. Because we weren’t quite ready to use it, we needed to move it from our truck in the driveway to a climate-controlled shop on the back of our property for storage. My boys moved an entire pallet of boxes of flooring in just two short trips, and they were completely sold on the usefulness of an ORV.

After that, we used the Ranger multiple times to haul bags of feed and woodchips from the driveway to the barn, used the bed to clean up branches and haul cardboard to the bonfire. I had hoped to use it to haul bales of straw for garden mulch, but we ran into some really wet weather toward the end of our loan, so I decided not to tear up our lawn by driving over it. I’m sure the Ranger could have handled it just fine, but the ground was so soft we worried we’d leave ruts everywhere.

Comfort in an ORV?

The 10 inches of suspension travel and adjustable shocks make for an exceptionally smooth ride, even when bumping around the field. And the seats are really comfortable too. We were impressed with how well they were made and how they dried quickly after a rain. We also loved the multitude of drink holders, storage cubbies under every seat, seat belts for safety, USB port for charging your phone, 4” digital driver display, and a hard roof for safety. (Ask my kid who forgot we’d just installed a clothesline how important that roof can be.)

The Ranger we drove did not have the optional hard doors, a windscreen or a back window, but I have seen these options on some local ORVs and I can imagine that for ranches working in inclement weather they’re a must-have.

Buy or Rent a Polaris ORV: Everything’s Bigger (and Better) in Texas

Starting at $24,299, the 2023 Polaris Ranger Crew XP 1000 Texas Edition is one of the biggest, baddest ORVs on the market and definitely the crown of the Ranger family. Yes, the NorthStar edition tries to outdo it with its hard doors and fancy name, but it’s not a Texan, and it doesn’t come in a beautiful bronze metallic finish.

It was fun to notice how many other Rangers we saw on the road and on farms around us. They definitely have a corner on the market around here. Their “task to trail versatility” is proven every weekend when we see all the neighbors heading home from their afternoon down at the river, ORVs covered in mud, and people appearing to have a grand ol’ time.

Did you know that you could rent a Polaris RANGER? There are even planned off-road adventures you can sign up for to experience the RANGER if you don’t have your own property. There are also Polaris memberships available where you can pay a monthly fee for credits that you can use to rent Polaris vehicles, including snowmobiles, pontoon boats, and motorcycles if you’d like to enjoy the outdoors in multiple ways without owning all the things.

Everything Changes When You Exit the Interstate

In recent years, my travels through Virginia typically involved a speedy road trip from New York City to Chattanooga to visit my parents. After making it through New Jersey to Pennsylvania, I’d hop on Interstate 81 through Virginia. As I passed exit signs for Roanoke, Wytheville, Abingdon and towns in between, I paid no attention unless there was a Starbucks handy with a venti iced tea waiting on me.

Occasionally, my husband and I would detour off I-81 toward the east and pick up the Blue Ridge Parkway or venture into Shenandoah National Park along the Skyline Drive for some fresh mountain air and maybe a short hike or two – all of which I highly recommend! But as for the Southwest corner of Virginia, I had no idea what this region rich in Appalachia history had to offer until I slowed down, exited I-81 and drove beyond Starbucks.

Day 1: Roanoke, Where Art, Nature and Trains Collide

Start your road trip adventure in Roanoke – also known as “Star City” for the iconic Roanoke Star that overlooks the city from its position atop Mill Mountain. A drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway above the city takes you to the star and there’s no better time to be there than at sunset. You can also hike from downtown to the Roanoke Star on the Star Trail – a 3.7-mile out-and-back hike with an elevation gain of 800 feet. Don’t worry, your breathless moments will be rewarded with captivating views of the city below.

While in town, learn about the region’s rich railroad heritage at the Virginia Museum of Transportation. Be sure to step outside to explore the collection of locomotives. For art lovers, the Taubman Museum of Art is a must-see. World-class art is displayed in the museum’s 11 galleries set in a venue purposefully designed to honor natural elements from the region including a 77-foot glass peak in the atrium representing the Roanoke Star. At Black Dog Salvage, browse the bounty of upcycled designs or take in a show at the Dog Bowl – an outside music venue. A collection of eclectic shops and tasty eateries await downtown.

Where to Stay:

  • Step back in time at the Tudor-style Hotel Roanoke built by railroad magnate Frederick J. Kimball in 1882. The city’s centerpiece, Hotel Roanoke retains its 19th-century charm with all the modern amenities of today.

Day 2: Floyd, Where Toe-tapping Music Reigns Supreme

From Roanoke, drive south on US-221 to Main Street in Floyd, Virginia. A favorite stop on The Crooked Road, Virginia’s Music Heritage Trail, the Floyd Country Store has hosted the Friday Night Jamboree for 40 years. Housed in an old-fashioned general store located in a one-stoplight town, the Floyd Friday Night Jamboree attracts music lovers from around the world. It’s good clean fun set against a backdrop of bluegrass, jam sessions, toe-tapping and dancing. Everyone’s welcome from overall-wearing farmers to tie-dye-clad hippies. Join the fun and be sure to get some ice cream while you’re there.

While in town, get a taste of Floyd’s down-home flavor in local restaurants and browse the shops and galleries highlighting the work of local artisans.

Where to Stay:

  • In the heart of town, Hotel Floyd is an ideal place to rest up after a night of country dancing.

Day 3: New River Trail State Park, Where Nature Beckons

Every road trip needs a stop for outdoor recreation, and in Southwest Virginia, there’s no better place than the New River Trail State Park. This 57-mile linear park parallels the historic New River as you bike, hike or ride horseback along an abandoned railroad right-of-way.

The park’s Foster Falls area provides bike and canoe rentals along with a horse arena and a gift shop. If you packed your fishing poles, try a little fishing on the banks of the New River.

Where to Stay:

  • If you choose to make a day of your outdoor adventures, the Inn at Foster Falls provides a lovely boutique lodging option. Near the river’s edge, this two-story brick building features 10 well-appointed boutique rooms and inviting wrap-around porches.

Day 4: Wytheville, Where Hidden Gems Entice

Located 30 miles from New River Trail State Park, Wytheville delivers a surprise at every turn. First, there’s Main Street where the can’t-be-missed “Big Pencil” extends from a Wytheville Office Supply store. Then, there’s nostalgic-filled Skeeters serving up “World Famous Hotdogs” since  1925. In another surprise, Edith Bolling Wilson, the only First Lady from Appalachia grew up in the residence above – which is now a museum.

When you’re not on the road, enjoy dinner at the 1776 Log House Restaurant with a storied history and the most unusual gift shop I’ve seen anywhere. Meandering through the many added on log cabin structures that comprise the 1776 Log House is much like exploring a museum. When you’re ready to dine, I recommend the “Blue Ribbon” – a ribeye steak topped with bleu cheese and sauteed mushrooms. Delicious.

For entertainment, head to the historic Mildwald Theatre on Main Street. Originally built in 1928, the theatre was recently restored and boasts a variety of shows from music to movies to live theatre.

Where to Stay:

  • Make yourself at home amid luxury at the Trinkle Mansion Bed and Breakfast. Innkeepers, Patti and Bernie Pizinger make you feel right at home in this 19th-century beauty. You’ll also awake to a 3-course breakfast – just the fuel you need to start the day.

Day 5: Dragon Trails, Where White-knuckle Driving Takes the Wheel

Wytheville sits at the heart of The Claw of the Dragon – a 350-mile drive wildly popular with motorcyclists. The Claw loops through portions of seven counties intertwining with numerous other not-for-the-faint-of-heart driving routes.

Unless you’re a hard-core adventure driver, you may want to break this beast up with a few less intense sections. Start your day with a drive south on US-11 to Marion, VA. From there pick up Highway 16 North to Tazewell. This 32-mile two-lane stretch of road known as the “Back of the Dragon” crosses three mountain ranges as it snakes around 300 hairpin curves. An ideal drive for sports car fans, but even those in an SUV can enjoy the fun…just hold on tight.

From Tazewell, meander south again to Highway 52 for a less intense scenic drive to Big Walker Lookout. Known as Virginia’s oldest privately-owned scenic attraction, the onsite Big Walker Country Store hosts regional musicians and artisans every weekend from May to October. Big Walker Lookout is also home to a 100-foot observation tower boasting a view of five states on a cloudless day. Reward yourself for the climb to the top with a big scoop of hand-dipped Virginia Homestead Creamery Super Premium Ice Cream. Trust me on this.

Day 6: Abingdon, Where Artists and Chefs Abound

Located approximately 30 miles south of Wytheville lies another charming Southwest Virginia town I passed over for years. Abingdon exudes an artsy vibe and with good reason. The town is home to The Arts Depot – a non-profit community-based fine arts center supporting local artisans. Abingdon also supports performing arts, especially at the Barter Theatre. Celebrating 91, the theatre opened with an admission price of 35 cents or an equivalent amount of produce earning it the moniker of “Vegetable Theatre.”  The Barter Theatre features world-class shows across a broad spectrum of genres.

After spending the past five days road-tripping along country roads, Abingdon chefs will be happy to feed you…and then feed you some more. For a small town, the selection of dining options is mind-blowing. I can’t pick a favorite, but I must confess, sake-based cocktails at Foresta on Main Street were amazing. I was fortunate to wrap up my trip by dining on the rooftop at Summers Roof and Cellar to the sounds of live Appalachian music. Hard to top that.

Where to Stay:

  • Fountain Inn on Main sits in the heart of Abingdon. If your family or friends are along for your road trip, this is an ideal vacation rental to share. It’s a stunner and you’ll have a full kitchen should you decide to cook. If not, you can reheat those delicious leftovers from all the incredible local restaurants in the microwave.

Elevate Your Road Trip with a roadsurfer Campervan https://agirlsguidetocars.com/elevate-your-road-trip-roadsurfer-campervan/ Thu, 16 May 2024 11:00:00 +0000 https://agirlsguidetocars.com/?p=633766 Camping is cool; the Right Van Will Make It Cooler.

As a lifelong road-tripper, there’s nothing I love more than escaping the madness of the city and hitting the open road. Recently, I elevated my road trip experience by exploring the mountains, national parks, and deserts in the Southwest USA by campervan. While I appreciate the lure of a big RV with all the comforts of home, I’m not up for driving something that big, and I certainly don’t want to tow a vehicle. The solution? A campervan.

The campervan offers many of the benefits of an RV – just not as elaborate. But it also provides the convenience of an easy-to-drive vehicle that can park in a normal-sized parking space and still give you a place to prepare meals and sleep. The campervan we chose also had a bathroom on board with a shower. It was small, but it worked.

The roadsurfer Experience

For our adventure, German-based roadsurfer loaned us a campervan. roadsurfer was started by a group of childhood friends with a passion for camping. Their goal was to make the process of renting a campervan seamless and simple. Europe has benefited from the roadsurfer experience since 2016. Fortunately, roadsurfer is now in North America with locations in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and, most recently, Las Vegas. The company also has two Canadian locations, Vancouver and Calgary.

For our campervan experience, we chose the Las Vegas location, which was ideal for exploring the Southwest. As the founders hoped, the process was simple. Once the van was reserved, we received an e-mail with a link to a tutorial to familiarize ourselves with the model we were renting. When we arrived to pick up the van, we also received in-person instructions. There was ample time to ask all the questions we wanted as an employee demonstrated how to use all the van’s features.

You’ll likely have many questions if you’ve never rented a campervan. I certainly did the first time I rented a campervan. My husband was the newbie this time, but I needed a refresher course. Here are some of the questions you’ll want to cover with your rental company before venturing off to explore.

What is Included with the Campervan Rental?

Most campervan rental companies do not provide an all-inclusive rate. The additional charges for amenities depend on the company you’re renting from. With roadsurfer, a “kitchen box” that includes eating and cooking utensils, coffee cups, glassware, plates, and pots and pans is provided free of charge. However, there is an additional fee for bed linens. In the Couples Condo van for two individuals, roadsurfer provides two camp chairs free of charge. Just be sure to ask so there are no surprises.

Is Your Mileage Unlimited?

Unlimited mileage is a perk I always look for, whether I’m renting a car or a campervan. Considering that hitting the road in a campervan to explore backroads, national parks, and the wide-open spaces we crave will rack up some serious miles, it’s best to find a company that includes unlimited mileage. With roadsurfer, mileage is unlimited. On our recent road trip through the southwest, where miles of desert begged exploration, not paying for excess mileage was a huge benefit.

What Insurance is Included with Your Rental?

No one wants a camping vacation to turn into a financial nightmare. To keep that from happening, but sure to find out what type of insurance is offered or included with your campervan rental. At roadsurfer, a policy is included that covers most potential situations. If you’re more comfortable with an upgrade to the policy, that is possible for a fee.

We chose to stay with the provided coverage and had no issues. But it’s important to know what isn’t covered. For example, the policy that comes standard with the Roadsurfer rental doesn’t include coverage for awning damage due to severe winds. We knew not to open the awning during high winds, so we had no issues. A little common sense goes a long way.

Who Should You Contact if You Have Any Mechanical Issues?

Each company has emergency contacts, and it’s important to know that number before you drive away in your campervan. In the roadsurfer campervan, there is a QR code on the dashboard that provides a link to the vehicle’s manual as well as contact information for emergencies. Be sure to download the manual and additional information before you drive away. If you happen to end up in a place with no cell service, you’ll be glad you took care of that in advance.

Does the Campervan Have Hot Water and Heat?

Exploring the southwestern deserts of Arizona, we experienced huge temperature swings. Days brought sunshine and highs close to 80 degrees, but at night, those temperatures dropped to 30 degrees at times.

Fortunately, the roadsurfer has heating and hot water, and everything is managed through an onboard panel. Still, sometimes things happen. One night we forgot to flip the switch located on the van’s exterior to turn on the propane that’s needed for the heater to work. My husband had to venture out in the freezing night air to correct that. He was rewarded for his efforts with a view of the Milky Way and a shooting star set to the backdrop of howling coyotes in the distance.

More Things to Know about roadsurfer

While there are many companies offering campervan rentals, I’ve been incredibly happy with the roadsurfer brand. My first roadsurfer experience was in the Liberty Lodge (formerly known as the Road House XL) – a pop-up Sprinter camper. That model sleeps four, making it the perfect choice for a girls’ trip I did last year. This time, we chose the Couples Condo since it was just my husband and me. roadsurfer also offers Class C RV motorhomes for those who prefer a larger vehicle.

If your road trip adventures expand into Europe, there are even more options. I’m scoping out the possibilities, so don’t be surprised when you learn that I’ve been driving all over Europe in another roadsurfer model. It’s inevitable!

School’s Out for Summer! 4 Sweet Summer Road Trip Ideas https://agirlsguidetocars.com/schools-out-for-summer-4-summer-road-trips/ Fri, 10 May 2024 11:00:00 +0000 https://agirlsguidetocars.com/?p=633173 Ready for the Summer? We’ve Got Destinations to Explore.

The kids are out of school, the sun is shining, and the often slower pace of the summer months is perfect for hitting the open road. Unlike travel squeezed in around school schedules or over the holidays, summer travel has a more unhurried vibe. The longer days give drivers more daylight driving hours, although I one thousand percent recommend using some of that precious daylight to make an unplanned stop when you see something interesting or simply think, “I wonder where that road goes?”

One of the drawbacks of summer road trips is that you’ll find lots of other people on the road with the same plan. However, the upside is that you might have more time and be able to prioritize slow travel. How nice is it to be able to really be present and absorb the place you’re in when you are having a summer adventure?

Whether your philosophy is “the more the merrier” or you seek to combat the crowds by choosing an off-the-grid destination, one of these TK summer road trips might be the inspiration you need to do that safety check on your car, load up, and explore.

Surrounded by water, there is no shortage of water activities on a summer road trip to Door County in the summer. Photo: Door County

Point Your Road Trip Wheels North to Door County, Wisconsin

Located between the waters of Green Bay and Lake Michigan, Door County was once a summer playground for affluent Chicagoans seeking to escape the city’s heat. Today, this 70-mile peninsula offers a bevy of activities all year round, although summer is especially beautiful. It remains a great place to enjoy being outdoors without sweltering temperatures.

I live in San Antonio, and despite my love of summer sun, the triple-digit temperatures are not my favorite thing, so Door County tops my list of road trip-worthy summer spots.

Surrounded by all the water, you are probably guessing that there are ample opportunities for water activities in Door County, and you would be correct! You can take part in all types of water activities near Door County’s beaches and waterways, including swimming, fishing, boating, paddleboarding, and even snorkeling and diving. The water will likely seem cold if you’re coming from the south and are used to warmer waters, but it is warm enough to swim safely. Research water activities ahead of time to see if you’d be more comfortable in a wet suit.

Summer Road Trip to Door County’s Parks

If you prefer to take in the water’s beauty without getting in it, Door County has gorgeous, scenic hiking and other opportunities to explore the outdoors. You can’t get very far without views of the water! Peninsula State Park offers everything from a lighthouse to explore to bike trails. There’s also Eagle Tower, a completely accessible viewing tower with gently sloping ramps that are both wheelchair and stroller-friendly.

One of the coolest things I did in Door County was to go stargazing. As a city dweller, I’m completely fascinated with the night sky in places less populated by light pollution. Newport State Park is the best place to see the stars in Door County. We put “International Dark Sky Park” into Google Maps when we were near the park and followed Newport State Park road into the park until we reached a dead end. Do not stop at the park entrance hut.

Once you’ve parked, take the paved path about 200 yards to the water. If you go before it gets completely dark, you’ll be able to see just fine, but if you go after dark, I recommend you make the trek without flashlights. I know that sounds crazy, but your eyes will quickly adjust to the dark, and you—and everyone else—will have a better experience if you keep light from flashlights or phones to a necessary minimum.

Sheridan Avenue in Cody, Wyoming has shops, lodging, places to eat, and more. And, walkable for when you’re ready to take a break from driving. Photo: Cody Yellowstone

Cody, Wyoming – The Gateway to Yellowstone National Park

Cody is 53 miles – about an hour’s drive – from Yellowstone National Park’s East Entrance. Yellowstone is a fantastic summer road trip destination in itself and the town of Cody is a perfect basecamp to explore the park. The drive from Cody to the East Entrance takes about an hour each way. Compliment the scenic drive with education and listen to the free Chief Joseph Scenic Byway episode on the Travelstory app. The episode lasts most of the drive, correlates with the scenery you will pass, and allows some historical context. Best of all the episode, created in partnership with Cody Yellowstone, does not require a cell signal, which is a good thing because you probably will not have one!

If you need another driving adventure, consider renting a UTV from Tread ‘N Trails in downtown Cody and exploring over 25,000 acres of public lands in a Polaris Side-by-Side UTV. The only requirement is a valid driver’s license and a sense of adventure. And, while a sense of direction is always useful, the UTVs are programmed with routes, and you’re likely to be within cell signal the entire time, even though the open skies and pristine, unspoiled scenery will suggest otherwise.

Downtown Cody has lots of options for shopping, dining, and places to stay, so once you’re ready to call it a day on the driving, this is an easy and fun place to explore on foot. From getting a slice of Old West history at the historic Hotel Irma to eclectic boutiques to a cool craft beer scene, strolling down Sheridan Avenue is an opportunity to build your own adventure.

Tips for Driving in Yellowstone National Park

Although Cody is fun to explore on its own, it’s almost inconceivable to think of going to Cody and skipping Yellowstone. You are right there! Driving through Yellowstone is one of the best adventures you can have in your car, so heed this advice to have the best experience:

  • Accept that you are going to sit in traffic. Whether that’s a line to get into the park or a congested bear jam, there are probably going to be times when you just want to go but can’t because someone else’s car is in front of you. Everyone loves Yellowstone on a summer road trip. There’s traffic. Know it going in and be patient. There’s lots to look at.
  • Don’t stop in the middle of the road. While that might sound like dumb advice, it’s easy to get distracted by the gorgeous scenery, wildlife, or other activities around you. There are pull-out spots along the parks’ main roads, so make sure to use them.
  • Wildlife has the right of way. Seeing bison, bears, and other wild creatures from your car is breathtaking. But sometimes, bison are gonna bison. They will walk into the road, often in front of your car, without looking, as if they expect you just to stop. And that’s exactly what you should do. While maybe you could reason with an errant three-year-old who lurched out into the street, that doesn’t work with a bison, and really, it’s their space. We’re just looking.
  • Bring Snacks. Once you’re committed to driving through Yellowstone National Park, there aren’t many choices for where to stop and get food. If you’re doing a daylong road trip through the park and driving back to Cody, you’re probably going to eat breakfast before you leave in the morning and a late dinner after you’re back. Make sure you pack lots of things to eat in the car, especially protein-heavy snacks like jerky and energy bars.

Whether you choose this Missouri city as a destination or see the Gateway Arch from Interstate 64 and think, “We should stop to check that out,” this is a summer road trip spot where you can pack in a week’s worth of fun or enjoy some highlights for an afternoon.

If you’re a national parks person, you can’t miss a stop at the country’s smallest national park, Gateway Arch National Park. Long the most visible, recognizable symbol of St Louis, the Arch is a tangible symbol of Westward expansion. You can ride to the top of the Arch, which is a fun, cross-it-off-your-travel-bucket list experience. The trams are in pods that seat four people and the ride takes about four minutes to reach the top. The observation area is narrow and on a clear day, you can see neighboring Illinois on one side and view the St Louis city skyline from the other.

At the base of the Arch is a very well-done museum that offers immersive exhibits that tell the story of St Louis’ role in settling the American West. Visitors can also walk around the base of the Arch to get a full sense of how massive it really is.

Fun fact: I lived just outside St Louis for five years and never went to the top of the Arch because I thought it was terrifying. I found the experience very mildly anxiety-inducing but I’m proud of myself for doing it when I visited last October. I it wasn’t the scary event, I’d made it out in my head to be, and I recommend doing it at least once in your lifetime.

What We Love Here: An Up and Coming City for Food

St Louis is also an incredible food and beverage city. While you might think the food is limited to St Louis style thin crust pizza and gooey butter cake – both legit examples of Midwestern yumminess – the city is a blend of food culture, brought in by recent immigrants and St Louis-born chefs who’ve trained and elsewhere and returned home. Eating in St Louis is a joy.

If you want to get your taste buds going, check out the short film The Flavor of St Louis. I recommend eating at each of the highlighted restaurants while you are in town, from freshly made sushi at Sado to an elevated veggie-forward experience at Vicia to the most to-die-for pastries at La Patisserie Chouquette.

Under-the-Radar Road Trip Near Houston: Sugar Land, Texas

I’ll end my list of sweet summer road trip picks with – what else? – Sugar Land. A mere 20 miles from bustling, busy Houston, Sugar Land’s name comes from the product it was once best known for producing – sugar. Early settlers brought sugar cane plants to the area, which thrived in the fertile soil in the Brazos River floodplain. The area’s sugar plantations were eventually absorbed into the Imperial Sugar empire, which had its refinery and distribution center in Sugar Land for 150+ years. The old sugar factor still stands as a local icon and landmark, although sugar isn’t produced in Sugar Land any longer.

Sugar Land has a quaint and walkable town square lined with shops and creative places to eat. The town square always has something going on, from free fitness classes to live music. Even if there’s nothing going on, the space is picturesque and Instagrammable, with clever seating, fountains, and fun sculptures that make imaginative photo backdrops.

For a super quirky experience in Sugar Land, book a time slot at the Department of Wonder, which is an interactive, mixed-reality experience. The experience is a little hard to describe, but a great way to summarize it is “Stepping into a 10,000-square-foot video game and going on a quest.” Anyone who has ever had any type of Meow Wolfe experience will find some similarities in the Department of Wonder. Guests enter through a “lamp shop” and are given a lantern, which they’ll use to solve clues to open the magic portal.

The Department of Wonder has indoor play equipment, live actors, and lots of whimsy. There are adults-only sessions and kids’ sessions, both of which must be booked in advance. The adult-only sessions include cocktails, and the role players are a little more spicy.

What We Love Here: Sugar Land’s Outdoor Spaces

Although you can park your car in downtown Sugar Land and have a world of fun things within easy walking distance, you’ll need to get in your car to explore Sugar Land’s green spaces. Even though Sugar Land is not the big city of Houston, it is still very much an urban area with carefully designed green spaces to get people outdoors and moving. Trust me, check out all the delicious food options in downtown Sugar Land, and you’re going to want a walk or a bike ride, if you’ve brought your bikes along on your summer road trip.

  • Cullinan Park: a 754-acre nature preserve with a four-mile network of soft, easy, shaded trails and a boardwalk over the lake, perfect for wildlife viewing. Warning: Heed the alligator signs! I didn’t see any, but they’re living in the park.
  • Brazos River Park: Three miles of paved trails, playgrounds, and public outdoor art.
  • Sugar Land Memorial Park: Peaceful paved walking paths, a pond with a self-service kayak rental kiosk, and monuments to military veterans. I also saw alligator warning signs here, but no gators!

Car Nap Kit – Because Sometimes in Between Here and There Is Our Only Moment of Peace.

Let’s face it – sometimes the hour-long wait parked in the school pickup line is the most peaceful alone time we get all day. There are times when we rush from a work event to wait the last half hour until after school sports are finished before heading home to put dinner and the table and get everyone to bed.

More brands continue adding comfort-focused features like the Toyota Sienna minivan’s reclining seats. The Ford F-150 pickup truck has options that can transform the cabin into a remote office. Our cars are evolving into more than just what gets us from A to B largely because of how much time we actually spend in them. Sometimes if we don’t steal a few minutes of nap time between destinations the side of us that my kids laughingly call “demon mommy” comes out. These items are a great car nap bundle, but you can definitely customize your car nap kit to specifically suit the moms in your life. Create a shareable playlist of relaxing music on Spotify or Apple Music to make it personal!

A LED Car Mirror Light Is an Awesome Mother’s Day Gift

We all pull down that visor from time to time for makeup touch ups or a quick teeth check before a meeting. But if there isn’t plenty of sunlight, the factory installed visor lighting doesn’t always do the trick. These car mirror lights will do the trick and transform the driver’s seat into an on-the-go vanity for the moments when mom really needs to check herself out.

Purse Hooks for Totes and Purses are THE Best Mother’s Day Gift

Lately some of the larger middle consoles give us a nice discreet place to store our purse when we don’t feel like hauling it around. But how many times have does an entire bag get dumped on the passenger floor board when we have to unexpectedly step on the brakes and mom’s purse slides off the front seat? Since purse hangers or bag hooks aren’t exactly at the forefront of car design, there are some great aftermarket options with the potential to be real game changers for moms on the run. Plus, there are so many styles to choose from!

Car Care Kit – But Take it Up a Notch

OK, let’s be real. While an awesome new vacuum or appliance can be the best gift ever, most moms clean all the time. So a gift that helps them clean more might not be the best idea. But, you can get her a car care kit and make some car cleaning vouchers to show that not only did you buy a kit to do the job the right way, but you are also willing to clean something for her so she can relax.

Another great alternative is to buy her some gift cards to a local detailing place, or offer to take the car for her while she relaxes for a win-win solution.

Towing While Using Hands-Free Driving? Yes, Using Chevrolet Super Cruise in the Silverado Pickup Truck https://agirlsguidetocars.com/chevy-silverado-super-cruise-passenger-princess/ Wed, 08 May 2024 11:00:00 +0000 https://agirlsguidetocars.com/?p=633523 Towing a Trailer… Without Lifting a Finger in the Driver’s Seat

When I was offered the opportunity to learn to use Super Cruise while trailering a load in the Chevy Silverado, I quite honestly didn’t know what to expect. I knew Super Cruise meant hands-free driving, but trailering in that capacity was… difficult to wrap my head around. Especially because so many of the times I’ve hauled a rig it’s been full of precious equine cargo. The idea of trusting tech to take the wheel while pulling a trailer was a little off-putting.

But I gave it a chance and came away convinced after driving and towing in a Chevy Silverado.

Now, It’s worth noting that Super Cruise is only available in the top of the line Silverado High Country edition which starts at $68,495 paired with the 5.3L EcoTec3 V8; $69,290 when paired with the 3.0L Duramax turbo diesel, or $71,185 with the 6.2L EcoTec 3 V8 engine. The base model Chevy Silverado starts at $36,800.

Regardless of the engine option, every Silverado High Country is equipped with a 10-speed automatic transmission with Electronic Precision shift (simply meant to give the pickup truck a super smooth ride).

Towing in a Chevy Silverado Truck with No Hands! Wait… What?

The truck I tested pulled a 22-foot enclosed trailer that I was told weighed between 3,000 and 3,500 pounds. We had the option to take the rig out alone or have a Chevy pro ride along. For me, that choice was a no-brainer. I came to learn, and what better way to receive an immersive knowledge dump on the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado High Country than hang out with someone who knows the product inside and out?

I did need some reassurance once we were on the highway to actually try the feature. The traffic was gnarly! Folks were changing lanes all over the place, pulling out in front of us; we saw a full gambit of frightening towing situations inside of about 90 seconds. It seemed way too variable to be able to entrust our lives and the towing rig to tech entirely. But, with my trusty co-pilot, Maria, instructing me on how to activate Super Cruise, I tentatively pressed the button on the left-hand side of the Silverado steering wheel.

Super Cruise Takes the 2024 Chevy Silverado High Country Up a Notch

Turns out the tech is on point. It only took me a minute or two to completely trust Super Cruise to the point where I was chatting with Maria and talking animatedly with my hands as the Chevy truck seemed to drive itself. Amidst all that highway chaos I found peace behind the wheel – even though my hands weren’t at 9 and 3.

The steering wheel and driver display colors coordinate between red, blue, and green. The system turns red if the driver needs to take back control. A big LED strip on the top of the steering wheel makes it easy to see which setting is in operation.

If you haven’t towed much, Super Cruise makes it way more doable. For anyone who’s no stranger to towing, the value of a truck staying in the lane in the absence of human interference is life-changing. When I have to go back to towing with my peasant truck that doesn’t stay in the lanes on its own, it’ll be a bit of a letdown.

We drove a predetermined route, and whether at speed on a busy interstate or in stop-and-go traffic, Super Cruise moved the 2024 Chevy Silverado High Country effectively. The hands-free driving system navigated traffic changes like a champ, and the pickup truck pulled the load with ease.

Super Cruise is Cool, but It’s Not a Self-Driving Car

As awesome as this all sounds, don’t get it twisted. This isn’t a self-driving tow rig. Drivers still need to remain alert. Super Cruise hands-free driving systems like the one I tested in the Chevy Silverado are exactly that – hands-free driving systems. The system is intuitive and able to handle a variety of possible driving scenarios safely.

In fact, when you aren’t trailering, Super Cruise can actually change lanes for you. That’s pretty cool. Still, it’s driving assistant tech—not a self-driving feature.

Here are some Super Cruise takeaways at a glance:

  • An industry first:

Super Cruise pioneers hands-free driver assistance technology, allowing drivers to travel without hands on compatible roads, currently spanning over 400,000 miles in the U.S. and Canada, with plans to expand to approximately 750,000 miles by 2025.

  • It’s the only hands-free driving tech compatible with towing:

Notably, Super Cruise stands as the sole hands-free driver assistance technology in the industry, offering trailering capability.

  • Safe deployment philosophy:

GM prioritizes diligence and safe operation in developing its advanced driver assistance features, a commitment the company refers to as its “safe deployment philosophy.”

  • GM consumers want hands-free tech:

Super Cruise ranks as the second most compelling reason for vehicle purchases.

  • It makes driving easier:
Feedback from surveyed owners overwhelmingly supports the claim that Super Cruise enhances driving experiences, with over 80% expressing that it significantly increases relaxation while driving.

How I Felt about Super Cruise and the Chevy Silverado

The 2024 Chevy Silverado High Country already puts its best foot forward in terms of an elevated driving experience. Saying trucks ain’t what they used to be is old news. Still, in terms of luxury and comfort, this Chevy truck delivered with decadent two-tone leather upholstery and open-pore wood trim.

I may have been in the driver’s seat, but the quiet, upscale interior, user-friendly multimedia system, and smooth ride, combined with the Super Cruise system, made me feel like a peaceful passenger princess. If I knew I would regularly use the truck for towing, that would definitely be a reason why I’d choose the Silverado over its competitors.

‘Tis the Season! The Best Cars for Your Summer Road Trip https://agirlsguidetocars.com/best-cars-for-road-trips/ Fri, 03 May 2024 11:00:00 +0000 https://agirlsguidetocars.com/?p=633640 Successful Summer Travel is Better in the Right Car

With the sun shining brighter and temperatures rising, it’s that time of year again. Road trip season is upon us, promising freedom, adventure, and endless possibilities. For me, road trips hold a special place in my heart, rooted in memories of my late father, a cross-country truck driver, who would take my sisters and me on his work trips in his 16-wheeler, opening our eyes to new states and cities beyond our Brooklyn neighborhood.

Now, with my own family, my husband and I continue this tradition, exploring beyond our comforts and diving into new experiences, whether it’s a spontaneous trip to the East End or a planned adventure like our drive to the Hudson Valley in the Lincoln Nautilus. Road trips are not just about the destination but the journey itself, offering moments of joy, discovery, and connection.

What Makes a Car Road Trip Ready?

Venturing to places like the Montauk Lighthouse or savoring a cheesesteak from Ishkabibbles in Philadelphia or a Vieux Carre from Dauphine’s in D.C., I’ve learned what works and what doesn’t for road trips, whether short jaunts or lengthy journeys with or without kids. It’s clear that not all cars and SUVs are created equal for road trips.

While models like the Subaru Outback, Toyota RAV4, or Ford Mach-E are ideal for couples, larger vehicles such as the Honda Pilot or Chevrolet Tahoe are better suited for road-tripping families. Opting for the wrong car for a road trip, especially one that’s a gas guzzler, could mean sacrificing funds that could otherwise be spent on enjoyable experiences.

  • Reliable Performance: A dependable car or SUV is crucial for long-distance travel, ensuring smooth operation and peace of mind on the road.
  • Ample Cargo Space: With plenty of cargo room, travelers can pack essential gear, luggage, and supplies for extended journeys without the car feeling cramped or cluttered.
  • Comfortable Seating: Comfort is paramount during long hours of driving, so opt for a car with supportive seats, ample legroom, and an ergonomic design to keep passengers content and relaxed. Depending on the climate you may want seats that are either heated or ventilated or both.
  • Fuel Efficiency: Fuel-efficient cars help stretch your travel budget by minimizing stops for refueling and maximizing mileage, allowing you to cover more ground on your adventure.
  • Advanced Safety Features: Safety should never be overlooked on road trips. Look for cars equipped with advanced safety features such as lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking to help keep you and your passengers safe on the road.

The Priorities Include the Memories

For me, road trips embody more than just transportation; they’re about the laughter, unexpected detours, and cherished memories created along the way.

Whether it’s recalling the time my daughter and I got lost on a back road en route to a Hamptons movie screening thanks to glitchy GPS, or eagerly planning our next escapade, road trips hold a cherished spot in my heart.

The NASCAR Cup Series first launched at the Circuit of The Americas (COTA) in Austin, Texas, for the inaugural EchoPark Automotive Texas Grand Prix in 2021. Its fourth year in, NASCAR plus Texas is still a heady combination and getting better all the time. Its latest NASCAR event took place last Sunday, and I got to bring two very special guests to the race with me: my mom and dad.

Toyota Motorsports communications manager Sam Mahoney met us at the circuit and guided us through the gauntlet of badge-checking and wristband-getting and made sure we all had a great time. Neither Mom nor Dad had ever attended a NASCAR race before this, and it was an adventure. Honestly, they couldn’t stop smiling.

NASCAR Still Thrills

I divested myself of any preconceived notions about NASCAR events and its fans several years ago when I attended my first race with Lexus at the Sonoma Raceway. It was there that I met Hailie Deegan, a member of racing royalty and now a racing star. I also met Jill Gregory, then the head of NASCAR marketing and later the general manager and executive vice president of the Sonoma Raceway itself.

This time, I joined Toyota for a Sunday full of fast-paced entertainment. While the general viewership of NASCAR has been trending down lately, it’s far from going away any time soon. As automakers like Toyota continue to compete and innovate with new features and engineering, there’s always opportunity for growth.

In fact, Toyota is killing it on the track as the only manufacturer competing in NASCAR with three different vehicles across the three national series. One is the Camry (NASCAR Cup Series, which is the one I watched in Austin), the GR Supra (NASCAR Xfinity Series) and the Tundra TRD Pro (NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series). Over the last 17 years, Toyota has notched 180 wins and three championships in the NASCAR Cup Series, 228 wins and nine Truck Series championships, and four titles in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. Very impressive.

If you’re wondering how the humble Camry sedan could possibly be a rowdy track monster, you’re not alone – I wondered the same thing. Equipped with a powerful V8 engine and special manual transmission, the NASCAR version of the Camry looks familiar, but it acts very differently. Kind of like NFL player Travis Kelce on the football field versus his gentle-giant demeanor around his girlfriend, Taylor Swift.

We Met Toyota Driver Christopher Bell

In the Toyota suite, we met Christopher Bell, who competes in the number 20 car for Joe Gibbs Racing. The Oklahoma native smiled throughout the meet and greet, patiently taking photos with every family who approached him after a brief question-and-answer session. He may have a baby face, but the 29-year-old has been married to his longtime girlfriend, Morgan Kemenah, since 2020 and has earned an impressive number of wins so far.

Christopher is known to be a doting husband. During our meetup, he mentioned that his wife travels with him and made it clear that she is an important part of his life. She understands the business of racing as the daughter of sprint car crew chief Brian Kemanah and niece of sprint car driver Chad Kemenah.

After meeting Christopher, my parents and I headed to the garage, where we got to see the car before it went out on the track. Then, we walked along pit road to watch the crews and drivers get ready to rumble. Sam led us to our seats for the start of the race, which was a rare treat – sitting behind the crew chief and an array of screens right there behind the pit crews. We donned headphones connected to a radio so we could hear the conversation between the drivers and crew.

Of course, we were cheering for Christopher Bell and watched intently.

The NASCAR Pit Crews Are Unreal

One of the coolest things to watch at a NASCAR race is the pit crew in action during a tire change and fuel stop. While street cars have five lug nuts holding the wheel in place, NextGen NASCAR cars changed to a single, powerful lug nut in 2021.

Every time a car stopped in one of the pits near us, we craned our necks to gawk at the incredible athleticism of the crews tasked with changing four tires and fueling up the car in about 10 seconds. We could tell when the crews were ramping up for a stop because hoods would go up, helmets would go on, and fire aprons would be donned. Some bounced on their heels, ready to rip as soon as the car pulled up.

The pace is dizzying and amazing, as these highly trained people used high-powered tools to ensure their driver could get back on the track as quickly as possible.

Pro Tip: Go VIP, if You Can

NASCAR is a singularly exciting experience. You can absolutely buy inexpensive seats on the lawn or in the bleachers, and the tracks do a great job providing family fun, food, and activities for everyone. But if you can swing it, splurge for a spot in one of the VIP suites, which cost upwards of $900 at COTA. That includes food, meet and greets like the one we had with Christopher, and access to some of the best seats in the house.

In the end, Christopher won the first stage and placed second in the championship. Watching my parents cheer for him was awesome for me; I have a grateful heart that I could do something special for the people who raised me to love cars. Thanks to Toyota, we got to create family memories I’ll never forget.

April Showers Bring May Flowers – Six Epic Spring Road Trips https://agirlsguidetocars.com/spring-road-trips/ Mon, 08 Apr 2024 11:00:32 +0000 https://agirlsguidetocars.com/?p=632889 Are the Tulips in Bloom? Let’s Make a Road Trip Memory

Spring flowers, mild weather, and “Whoo hoo, it isn’t winter anymore!” are all great reasons to hit the road in the spring. Road trips are also usually much cheaper than flying, and they solve the problem of transportation when you get to your destination since you’ll already have your car.

Spring is often a less-crowded time to visit traditional summer destinations. More people are on the road when kids are out of school during the summer. Spring vacations are more staggered, so you’ll often enjoy exploring attractions and destinations with fewer humans.

If you can swing pulling your kids out of school for the year a little early, or if you’re seeking to plan a kid-free spring road trip, mid-to-late May can be an excellent time for Spring travel. The weather is warm but not too hot – this depends on where you go since many northern locations still have chilly temperatures well into the summer, but spring travel means beating the blazing heat you’ll find in summer.

road trip

Moab, Utah

Moab, Utah, has two scenic national parks, Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park. The small, outdoor-focused city of Moab is a great base camp for exploring both parks. Spring is the best time to go to Moab weather-wise. Go too early in the year, and it will be too cold, and late snow and ice might make some of the hikes dangerous. Go during the summer and encounter fiery days and tons of crowds. A Spring road trip is just right. Arches is far more popular than Canyonlands, and current policy requires reservations for Arches, so plan for that in advance. Canyonlands is every bit as spectacular, and I recommend making time for both.

Pro-tip: The Moab Resort, a WorldMark by Wyndham Associate Resort, operates a hiking concierge program with former park ranger Ash Nudd. This is great for anyone wanting to save time on researching hikes or who needs help picking the appropriate hike for your skill level. I found some of the hikes in the Moab area to be daunting, and I loved having help choosing what hike was best for my fitness level, time, and level of adventure – there are a lot of trails to choose from.

For the ultimate thrilling drive experience in Moab, take a 4×4 tour of Hell’s Revenge trail. The trail is on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands just outside of town, and the tours start in downtown Moab. This one isn’t for the faint of heart, so make sure someone in your group is up for driving across the “Devil’s Backbone” at the beginning of the trail. It’s a narrow rock bridge that resembles a spine, and while it looks scarier than it is, this is definitely a high-adrenaline activity choice. The views and the remote vibes inside the BLM lands are worth it, though.

road trip

Ennis, Texas

Although the entire state of Texas celebrates bluebonnet season, a road trip to Ennis is the place to peep the state flower. Pick up a bluebonnet map from the Ennis Welcome Center, hit the road, and follow the famous Bluebonnet Trails, 40-odd miles of wildflower-laden scenery. Bluebonnet season is March and April, although this tends to vary by year, depending on how cold the preceding winter has been and rainfall. If you miss the bluebonnets, don’t despair. Texas has other spring wildflowers that are just as vibrant and photo-worthy: Drummond phlox, Indian paintbrushes, pink ladies, and Mexican hats.

Pro tip: It’s super tempting to rush into that field of flowers to pose for the perfect picture, but check for snakes first! I keep a broom handle or hiking stick in my car when I’m doing bluebonnet pictures and riffle it through the blooms – carefully – to make sure there are no surprises. Making lots of noise to scare off anything hiding in the grass is also a good thing to do. Snakes generally feel the same way about us as we do about them and will take the opportunity to scurry away if they hear you coming.

If you are into glamping or camping, Bristol, Texas, 16 miles from Ennis, has the cutest Airstream and vintage travel trailer campground. The Range has a variety of Airstreams and cozy vintage trailers for rent and they also have RV spots for rent, too. Amenities include a pool, fishing pond, and nature trails. Food and beverages are available on the weekends at The Range’s central gathering spot, The Barn. There’s even an adorable Airstream bar.

Wichita, Kansas

While Kansas might not seem like an exciting road trip destination at first blush, don’t write this one off as “Nah, I’m not interested in Wizard of Oz stuff.” There’s a lot more to Kansas in general, and a road trip to Wichita will surprise you. A friendly urban city with a decidedly hip and cool vibe and an eclectic and diverse food scene, it’s easy to build your own adventure in Wichita based on your interests.

One of the best things to do in Wichita is to view the Keeper of the Plains from the water. Self-service kayak rentals are available from mid-spring through the end of summer. The Keeper of the Plains is a 44-tall steel sculpture that guards the confluence of the Big Arkansas River and the Little Arkansas River.

If you’re not into kayaking, you can see the Keeper of the Plains from Wichita’s river walk. It’s a beautiful landmark any time of day but especially lovely at sunset or during the nightly Ring of Fire, where clay pots surrounding the sculpture are set aflame, illuminating the river area. The Ring of Fire happens at 9 p.m. during spring and summer, so this is a fun way to end the day.

If you are into museums, the Great Plains Transportation Museum is a great way to learn about Kansas’ railroad history. The Old Cowtown Museum is an open-air living history museum that brings the Old West to life. For foodies, there’s an endless supply of delicious places to eat in Wichita. My favorites are the Wine Dive and Kitchen, Doo Dah Diner, and Public. There’s also a great craft beer scene.

Chattanooga, Tennessee

Chattanooga is a great road trip alternative to glitzier Nashville. This small city has lots of opportunities for outdoor adventure, and downtown Chatt has a cool urban vibe with fun places to grab coffee or a drink atop a rooftop bar. Chattanooga is a solid spot to visit year-round, but mild spring weather makes it a perfect April or May destination. If you’re taking a road trip and want to take a break from driving, downtown is safe and walkable. There are also free electric streetcars that help you get around or a citywide self-service bike rental service.

Pro-Tip: If you’ve got your heart set on exploring Nashville, Chattanooga is 130 miles to the South and an easy drive. Why not make it a two-city road trip?

You’ve probably heard of the Chattanooga Choo Choo, but what you might not know is that this refers to a place and not a train. The Choo Choo opened in 1909 as a train station and closed in 1970. Since 1973, the space has been operated as a hotel and vacation complex. Two places near the Choo Choo worth checking out are the restaurant STIR and American Draft, where you can enjoy a beer inside a vintage train car.

road trip

Tupelo, Mississippi

This small Mississippi town is most famous for being the birthplace of Elvis Presley, but there’s more to a road trip to Tupelo than just Elvis. There’s a walkable downtown shopping district and a cocktail trail sponsored by Visit Tupelo, with a prize at the end. Stay at the Hotel Tupelo, and all the stops on the cocktail trail, plus great places to eat and admire local art, are within walking distance – you can leave your car parked and have a safe and fun cocktail experience.

Tupelo is on the Natchez Trace Parkway if you’re all about scenic drives. This 444-mile scenic byway traverses three states and offers a fantastic opportunity to chillax and view rural scenery. The Natchez Trace Parkway offers something different for every season, and spring visitors will be treated to fields of wildflowers.

If you’re into shopping, save some room in your trunk when you’re planning your road trip to Tupelo. In addition to downtown boutiques, Tupelo has antique shops and two other dedicated shopping districts, Barnes Crossing and Midtown. And don’t forget to visit the Tupelo Hardware Co., where Elvis bought his first guitar. The store still sells guitars, hardware, and a sampling of other merchandise.

Pro-Tip: Don’t sleep on Elvis’ birthplace, even if you think you’re not a huge fan. This historical site is very well done, with high-tech interactions and exhibits that focus on Elvis’ formative years.

road trip

Green Bay, Wisconsin

In the fall, Green Bay is all about Packers football. Truth be told, Green Bay is all about Packers football 365 days a year, but spring road trip visitors can get a better sense of the city’s personality outside of football. And what better way to celebrate spring than to spend some time among the blooms?

Green Bay has a stunning 47-acre botanical garden filled with plants native to Wisconsin and worldwide. There’s a newly-opened children’s area that is so cool that it will make you long for your childhood. The good news is that many of the children’s garden attractions can be enjoyed by all ages, so whiz down that slide if the mood strikes you.

For more outdoor fun in Green Bay, check out Bay Beach Amusement Park, a retro-style park on the bay – see stunning views of the water from the top of the Ferris wheel. This attraction opens for the year in mid-May and is a very budget-friendly activity. Admission is free, and visitors purchase per-ride tickets for 25 cents, and rides are between one and four tickets each. Also, check out Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary, which has an indoor interpretive center and outdoor animal habitats.

The center is currently home to a cougar wol, ves, and various migratory birds throughout the year. There are over five miles of trails to explore, and this is a completely free activity.

If you are looking for a fun activity on two wheels, check out the Green Bay Active Sports Organization, GBASO for short. This indoor skate park is designed for fun and features bikes, scooters, skates, and skateboards. Bring your own or use loaner equipment on site. This is a great way to meet people from the local community. And, although you won’t catch a Packers game on a spring trip to Green Bay if you’re a baseball fan, you can check out a Green Bay Rockers home game. The Rockers are a part of the Northwoods League, and you can get tickets for about $10.

ATVs and Off-Road Vehicles Are a Ton of Fun. And Dangerous. These Are Our Safety Musts https://agirlsguidetocars.com/atv-off-roading-safety-musts/ Fri, 05 Apr 2024 11:00:14 +0000 https://agirlsguidetocars.com/?p=632867 Read This Before You Go Mudding on Your ATV.

My good friend got the call no parent wants to get: her teenage daughter was injured while riding on an ATV with friends. The driver hit a ditch going too fast and the ATV flipped. Everyone was able to jump off except her daughter, whose leg was pinned.

Luckily, the mishap only resulted in a bad scar. It could have been much worse, and if the girl had been aware of the proper safety protocols, she might have avoided injury altogether.

All-terrain vehicles, or ATVs, and off-road vehicles, or ORVs, can be a blast, especially for young people or anyone with acres of open land to explore. And while they can be dangerous, the good news is that with the right precautions we can protect ourselves and our loved ones and most accidents can be avoided. Here are some ATV and ORV safety tips for a safe ride.

Who Should Drive an ORV or ATV?

One of the biggest mistakes I see in ATV and ORV safety is letting small children operate machinery that is big enough to squash them. Keep in mind, these vehicles weigh hundreds, sometimes thousands of pounds, and have enough horsepower to go great speeds, pull other vehicles out of the mud, and carry up to 6 people plus cargo. These aren’t toys, they’re tools. And just like you wouldn’t hand your child a power saw capable of severing a limb, you shouldn’t hand them keys to a piece of machinery.

While there is no magic age limit, you will need to consider your child’s size. Can they properly reach all the pedals while their back is against the seat and while wearing their seat belt? Can they operate the gear selector? Next, are they mature enough to understand the dangers and the power of the machine? You can even set rules that younger drivers can only operate the vehicle in low gear to avoid high speeds.

Who Should Ride in an Off-Road Vehicle?

According to manufacturers’ safety tips, passengers shouldn’t be in the vehicle until they can sit on the seat as it is designed and their feet can rest flat on the floor. Of course, there are no laws that state this, and ATVs and ORVs are normally used on private property anyway, but it’s a good rule of thumb to follow, especially when you’re thinking about teens driving and who should be in or on the vehicle with them.

Buckle Up. Every Time.

A lot of ATVs don’t have seat belts, for good reason. They don’t have roll cages, and you need to have a chance of jumping off or rolling out from under before one lands on you. But larger side-by-sides often have seatbelts, just like a car. And they are meant to be used. These vehicles can reach pretty high speeds, and passengers are usually passively sitting versus holding onto handlebars while driving, so seatbelts help to protect against sudden jolts and unexpected turns. And it should go without saying that the bed of an ORV is not a seat.

atv polaris ranger

Have Doors? Close Them.

We get it; you like taking your Jeep out without the doors, but most side-by-sides have some kind of doors, even if they are just mesh. Use them. You’ll still get that open-air experience, but you’ll be protected from branches, arms, and legs, more likely to remain safe in the vehicle, and less likely to lose your belongings to the great outdoors.

ATV and ORV Safety Gear

You don’t have to suit up like an astronaut in a space before you hit the trail, but there are a couple of fit checks to consider as you prepare for your adventure.

Number one: Helmets are a must. You might not think you need one, but you do. One strong jolt can send you flying, and your head could hit a rock, a building, or a tree. Put the helmet on. Every passenger should be wearing a helmet.

Number two: Protective gear. While you’re not on two wheels and worried as much about road rash the way you would on a motorcycle or dirtbike, there are plenty of opportunities for contact with brush and branches, and should a flip occur, you’ll be glad you were protected. So, wear over-the-ankle boots, long pants, long-sleeved shirts and gloves. Eye protection is also a good idea if your helmet doesn’t provide it. Ear protection should also be worn for long rides; extended exposure to wind and engine noise can affect hearing.

Know Your ORV or ATV

Does your ORV or ATV have a kill switch? Perhaps there is a regulator that assures the vehicle won’t exceed a set speed unless all passengers are belted. Make sure all storage compartments, dump beds, and belongings are fully secured before driving. Then have fun. Safely!
