Have you ever walked into a house and instantly felt at home? Has it ever happened to you when you first sat in a car? It can, and it does. There is something familiar, like a comfortable seat or the way the steering wheel feels in your hands. Something that moves you, that you are immediately receptive to, and that doesn’t feel foreign. For me, that is what driving a Volkswagen car is like, and of all the models I’ve driven, the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas is the most welcoming.

Soothing Vibes Inside and Out

For a few years, it seemed like gray and monotone interiors were all the rage for homes and cars. But we’ve matured past that, and we’re all looking for warmth. Volkswagen’s soft ivory interior, trimmed with warm woods and a little chrome, reminds me of the soft, relaxing vibes I feel when I walk into a spa. All I’m missing is that amazing scent of essential oils. And heck, with a car diffuser like this one, I could probably have that too!

And it’s not just the finishes that make me feel relaxed; it’s the attention to detail and the placement of everything from the buttons on the steering wheel to just the right amount of tactile buttons and knobs on the dash. The 2024 Volkswagen Atlas is not cluttered. But it’s not cold, minimalistic, or sci-fi futuristic, either.

Sophisticated and Capable

The Volkswagen Atlas is refreshing on the outside, too. I like the departure from the mom-car look, with a higher stance and more SUV than crossover shape. Depending on the color and trim level, the Atlas can look sophisticated urban, ready for a night on the town, or off-road ready and equipped for camping or kayaking. Example? Roof rails are standard on every model.

I have yet to see the Atlas Peak Edition in person, but I think I’d really like the more rugged front-facia and knowing it has underbody cladding to protect the car when I’m driving out here in the country. I think this car’s versatility is what draws me to it.

The model we drove had a gorgeous panoramic sunroof, easy-open tailgate, all-season tires, and a beautiful Platinum Gray paint job that I loved.

Practically Speaking, the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas has it All

The Atlas has a third row with impressive legroom, which makes it a great choice for families, but that’s not all there is to love. Behind that third row is a large cargo space, and roof rails offer the ability to have a cargo carrier on top as well. This makes the Atlas one of our top choices when it comes to a good travel vehicle for our crew.

The turbocharged 2.0 engine produces 269 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque for a punchy drive and plenty of strength – the Atlas has a 5,000 lb. towing capacity! With this kind of muscle, you can tow a small camper, boat, or utility vehicle on a small trailer.

Let’s Break it Down

The starting price for the Volkswagen Atlas SE is $37,995. This is the base model and the model we drove. There are five other models to choose from, and the starting prices are as follows:

The SE with Technology starts at $42,100. This car looks just like the Atlas we drove but comes with some extras, like larger wheels, a hands-free liftgate, sun shades, two extra USB ports (for a total of 6), and a 115v power outlet.

The Peak Edition SE with Technology has all of that, plus unique bumper and grille, panoramic moonroof, multi-color adjustable ambient lighting, and nicer leatherette seats. This starts at $46,990.

Then you have the SEL, which starts at $48,880 and offers real leather seats, an 8-way power driver’s seat and a power passenger seat, a heads-up display, a 12” multimedia screen, and adaptive cruise control. On top of the SEL trim, you can add the Peak Edition package (starting price $50,870) and then finally the Premium R-Line, which starts at $52,890 and gives you even more extras like 21” wheels, R-line exterior styling, premium leather seats, Harmon Kardon audio, overhead camera view, heated first and second-row seats, and stainless steal pedal caps.

Who Is the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas For?

I really enjoyed my time with the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas SE. I think family roadtrippers and people who want or need lots of space will enjoy this SUV. Those who appreciate the most modern technology will be pleased with the high-resolution screens and many other features. The Chevrolet Silverado EV May Be the Most Incredible Pickup Truck Ever  https://agirlsguidetocars.com/chevrolet-silverado-ev-pickup-truck/ Thu, 23 May 2024 16:00:00 +0000 https://agirlsguidetocars.com/?p=634133 I wasn’t ready to be so wowed. But then I learned about the “midgate.”

Please pardon my fan girling here, but the Chevrolet Silverado EV simply delighted me. This innovative electric pickup truck’s 440 mile range, 754 horsepower, 10,000 lbs. of tow capacity, 4 wheel steering and dual-motor four wheel drive are a great reason to put it on your wish list.

Priced from $74K to about $95K and eligible for US federal tax incentives (as well as any state, local and utility incentives that might be available to you), the Silverado EV has a distinct look with a light bar across the front of the truck and a lighted Chevy bowtie badge. “Sail” panels fill the corners between the bed walls and the rear wall, adding to its aerodynamics and streamlining the look a bit. And then, there’s the midgate.

Meet the Midgate, a Game Changer in Pickup Trucks

The mid-gate, which for now is only available on the top of the line RS trim, essentially creates a fully open fourth wall of the cabin by folding the seats and wall flat on the floor. This also creates a huge amount of contiguous open space—nearly 11 feet—from the cabin to the tailgate. You can remove that 4th wall to carry almost anything. Put the windows down and the Silverado EV becomes a pickup truck convertible

Expect to see this concept copied and touted in trucks everywhere. It’s just so good. Here’s how it works:

  • As with most pickup trucks, flip the rear seats forward to move them out of the way
  • Pull the strap loops on the floor to fold the rear seat backs into the floor 
  • Unlock the window clips (similar to the clips used to unlatch a convertible car top) in the ceiling to remove the rear window
  • Stow the window in a dedicated storage space in the rear wall just below the window opening
  • Tap a button under the window storage and the wall releases; lower it to fold it flat
  • You can also leave the window in and simply open one or both panels below it for extra space without opening the entire wall
  • There are tutorial images on the rear seats that are visible once the seats have been moved out of the way
  • The entire process can be managed by one person and done in less than 2 minutes. And I got it down in just a couple of tries. It’s actually pretty easy to use

Driving The Silverado EV Is Fun and Easy

The other unique thing about the Silverado EV is that it’s all electric. As you’d expect, it’s quiet and powerful. It’s powered on by pressing the brake pedal and it’s powered off by walking away with the key fob, though you can also press a button on the touch screen to power down. And it has true one pedal driving, as well as a regenerative braking paddle that allows you to recoup unused power on the go when you don’t want to use one pedal driving. Let me explain.

Tap the one pedal driving icon on the touch screen—it appears in the fixed panel of icons just to the left of the main screen when the truck is in gear—and the system is active. You can set it for “normal” or “high” or turn the system off if you decide you don’t want to use it.

I really like the “high” setting because this allows you to regulate your speed and braking just using the the accelerator. When I used it I hardly touched the brake, even coming to a full stop. 

Another notable detail is that this system acts as brake hold, too; when it’s active and you come to a full stop, you’ll remain in that position until you tap the accelerator. There is not a brake hold or auto hold button, so you have to be in regenerative brake mode in order to avoid holding your foot on the brake at a traffic light or stop sign.

For those times when we want to have a bit of fun with the novelty of the instant acceleration that EVs offer, Chevy added “WOW” mode, or Wide Open Watts. Just tap the Mode button, then tap the WOW Icon on the screen and floor it for all 754 HP at once. We tried it and, yes, it’s fun, if a bit scary to get up to top highway speed in just a few seconds.

Even With All That Range, The Silverado EV’s Battery Seemed Very Efficient 

I’m not sure if it was my great use of regenerative braking or just the efficiency of the Silverado’s Ultium system, but our efficiency was pretty good. We started out with about 80% battery charge and drove for about two hours and still had more than 65% of the charge left despite heavy use of the air conditioning. But, with a range of 440 miles on the RS edition we were driving, we didn’t have any anxiety about running down the battery. 

Then, we sat in the truck with the air conditioning running most of the afternoon. It was a very hot, humid day and we kept the A/C on so we could hop in and cool off. Despite about more than two hours of this we only used 8 miles of battery range.

The Chevrolet Silverado EV Has a Fancy New Multimedia System

Chevrolet is midway through the rollout of its new multimedia system, which takes center stage in the Silverado EV. While you’ll find it functions the same as systems in other newly redesigned Chevrolets—the Traverse and the Colorado, for instance—the beauty of this system is that it’s customizable to the particulars of the vehicle. So the system in the Silverado EV has specific screens and functions for an electric car, including charging information.

Among them, a one-pedal driving button that, when the car is in gear, pops up on a fixed menu just to the left of the main screen. Tap it and you can turn on one-pedal driving and set your preferred level of regeneration. 

This fixed set of icons is also where you’ll find the headlight function, rather than a dial or on a stalk, and it’s where you’ll find the off button. 

Unlike the versions of this multimedia system in Chevy’s gas-powered cars, the setup in Chevrolet’s EVs don’t support Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. This may be an inconvenience to some, especially those who have grown used to using these systems, but there are work-arounds. You can log into your Google account to get access to your maps and apps, and you can log into supported apps like Spotify. For music or messages, though, you’ll have to connect your phone to the system via Bluetooth. 

The new system is nicely organized and offers deep function for all aspects of this truck, from customized drive modes to organizing system settings the way you’d like them.

All The Fancy Stuff Is Included in the RS Edition

We test drove the RS edition, the top of the line Silverado EV. In our model we had lots of fancy features including a digital rear view mirror, head up display, voice assistance and Super Cruise hands-free driving, which will be available on all trims of the Silverado EV. 

I particularly appreciated the digital rear view mirror. Not only is it great for being able to see behind the truck when you’ve got a full load, but it’s a great tool for towing and it provides a brighter image for better visibility at night. 

I also really appreciated the head up display. With turn by turn navigation directions in the HUD, your co-pilot is free to tinker with the screens, scan radio stations and more without disrupting the navigation. 

Other fancy features include the multifunction tailgate which folds out and down to form a stair, a full fixed glass panoramic sunroof (it does not have a screen but you can buy one as an accessory) and Wide Open Watts mode.

A Huge Frunk Fit for Frunkgating, and Seats for Sitting

This was a pleasant surprise: The front trunk, or frunk, is large, about 10 cubic feet and big enough to hold a lot of stuff. But better than that, it has a low, flat front edge so loading things in should be easy, and you can even sit like you would a tailgate. Clearly that’s what Chevy’s designers were thinking; they included small cutouts for cup or bottle in the frunk area so if you’re there letting the hood shade you while you watch your kid’s lacrosse match, you’ll have someplace to place your iced latte. 

And true to pickup trucks, the cabin is roomy. Really roomy. I measured an astounding 35″ between the front and rear seats when the driver’s seat was set for me, and I’m 5’8.” Behind my drive partner Paul, who is 6′ I measured close to 33.” Then, the bench seat is nice and wide, with room for 3 kids car seats or some car seats and some people and still, lots of room to stretch out and enjoy the ride.

Chevrolet Silverado EV Trims, Range and Power 

For now there are 3 available trims but Chevrolet has said that an off-road Trail Boss version is in the works, and there will likely be others as well. The two WT trims—for Work Truck—are intended for fleet owners and professionals for whom a truck is key. 

These models are less fancy, with an 11” screen instead of the 17.7” screen, and an 8” driver display. They also don’t include the midgate, but they do have the sliding center console cupholder; slide it back to reveal a huge well large enough for something like a cross body bag, a tablet, or maybe, your lunch. It’s huge. And it sits next to another huge console under the arm rest that also can hold a few large things. A 6 pack of water bottles, for instance. Just forward of all this cleverness is a wireless phone charge pad and USB ports so you can easily power all the things. 

The WT models also have the Google operating system with “hey Google” voice activation, as well as 3 outlets in the truck bed — two 120V and one 240V. And they have reverse charging so with the purchase of a wall box system you can use your truck as a huge battery on wheels for those times you need backup power. 

Also standard is the soft bed cover; cleverly, it attaches with velcro. Its a clever and simple solution for covering the truck bed. 

Here are how the Silverado EV trims line up: 

  • 3WT: 393 mile range, 510 HP, priced from $74,800
  • 4WT: 450 mile range, 515 HP, priced from $79,800
  • RST: 440 mile range, 754 HP, $96,495

If the price of the Silverado EV is a bit shocking, maybe the idea that the federal tax incentive applies to all models will help. Or, the fact that pickup trucks are expensive to begin with, so yes, you’ll pay a premium, but that’s part of the bargain of truck ownership these days. 

And, then, there’s this: You’ll drive away with the coolest pick up truck on the road.

The attraction was palpable the day I first met the 2024 Ford F-150 Raptor R. And I feel it was mutual. I had no idea how enamored I would become with this rock star truck, or how quickly it would happen either.

Late spring in the Southern California desert brings lots of promise. You see brightly colored wildflowers dotting the landscape, sharply contrasting in nature with sandy trails and cooler temperatures. They serve as a reminder of renewal and curiosity and inspiration.

All that and the cooler temperatures, however, did not have an impact on the hot crush I was pursuing recently. You see, I have come to determine that I have a terrible crush on a truck. And that truck is the Ford F-150 Raptor R, which has a starting price of $110,225.

The Ford F-150 Raptor has been around since 2009, and the more powerful Raptor R debuted in 2022, outdriving others in its high-performance, off-road category. In fact, it is so well-received that its legacy now extends into the Bronco and Ranger models. It’s pretty clear I am not the only one dreaming of a truck like this, and with more passion than I realized.

Aside from some exciting new features, this truck has presence, confidence. This truck can do whatever you want it to do. And the best part? You’re in for a hell of a good time.

The Superior Components of the Ford F-150 Raptor R

The Ford F-150 Raptor is in its third iteration now. It’s clearly established itself as a sand-racing demon that takes no prisoners. I got to experience this firsthand in the beautiful and vast Johnson Valley in the Southern California desert. This is where Ford Performance development roads are located, as well as the racecourse for the Ultra 4 truck race. It is sand dunes and craggy brush as far as the eye can see, and it is quite striking.

To be honest, there really is no terrain or location that this truck could not handle, except maybe super tight passageways that don’t allow a spread for a full-size truck to pass. The 5.2 L supercharged V8 generates 720 hp and a substantial 640 lb.-ft. of torque, and sits on 37″ tires.

What’s new for the 2024 Ford F-150 Raptor R?

The most significant development in the Ford F-150 Raptor R is the addition of Fox live valve shocks with dual valve technology. For those of us who aren’t gearheads, this means the performance team has created a cushy ride to optimize comfort and control. The dual valve technology doesn’t just apply to articulating wheels on deeply rutted trails; it also applies to your comfort on the highway.

Combined with the five-link rear suspension system, this truck was built for superior traction, stability, and control, no matter the location, but especially in challenging off-road terrain.

On the front, they’ve lowered the hood just a little bit more to allow for maximum visibility. They’ve also included a modular bumper in front for marvelous aftermarket accessories, an improved performance view screen in the driver panel, and a head-up display for tech lovers to enjoy.

How did the Ford F-150 Raptor R Do in the Sand?

I was assigned the Ford F-150 Raptor R in my favorite Shelter Green finish. Feeling snug and comfortable in the Recaro leather seat with Code Orange stitching, we slowly proceeded in our caravan which was about an hour away from the base camp. And I started to get really excited.

At one point, I owned a Jeep Renegade, which I had bought after a rental car experience in Colorado. I wanted access to off-road adventures after my week with that small SUV, so I bought one. However, at the time, I was living in the city of Chicago, and there really aren’t very many convenient places to take trucks and jeeps to test their capabilities. So until I traded her in, she stuck to the paved roads that I knew so well.

I always wanted to drive it off-road, though I couldn’t. So, I take it whenever I get an experiential opportunity like this. There’s something very freeing, a little dangerous, and always exciting about taking your ride off the asphalt. Kind of like a hot summer romance.

After creating a trail of dust deep into the desert, we had finally arrived at the course. We were put through our paces on the way there to get a feel for the terrain, which was sandy and rocky and rutted on the way to the race course.

Wait. How Fast Can I Go?

I did the race course and a fun speed jump multiple times, and I definitely can say two things: 1) this was one of the best off-road courses I’ve ever been on, and 2) I tested the capabilities of this truck; oh yes, I did. They were tight 90° turns, soft sand curves and corners, and lots of elevation changes. It was glorious, and the best part was that I was allowed to go as fast as I wanted.

When I did that, maybe I did over-correct my steering a skinch because I did not expect the truck to handle so well when I hit a hard left turn. Maybe I straddled a bush or two. Maybe, just maybe, I knocked a few cones down on the racecourse… but I wouldn’t know how well I could drive the truck and how well the truck could handle me and my driving until I tried, right? I can thank Ford Performance for developing off-road algorithms that constantly monitor the truck and driver to ensure things don’t get too out of hand for my security behind the wheel.

Just like getting a crush, the Ford F-150 Raptor R made me sweat. Coming back down after the initial run, I felt hot and breathless. I noticed beads of sweat on my forehead. I had a death grip on the steering wheel. I received lots of good-natured feedback from the professionals standing by. And I got a feeling of relief and just a little sadness, crossing the course’s finish line. It made me want to do it over again, which I was able to do. What a thrill.

It Was a Total Chick Fantasy

A dear friend and longtime California resident mentioned to me that the desert is cleansing. Well, I can tell you this much—it’s totally true. This experience completely swept away all of my previous notions about being neat and tidy, tooling around town in my performance vehicle, which I love dearly. But this truck. Well, it’s something special.

The Ford F-150 Raptor R has a starting price of $110,255. It’s a truck for a badass who loves being a road boss. Incredible performance, incredible control, incredible comfort. More than a few times I flew up out of my seat testing the capabilities of the truck (and of me!) with my seatbelt on. I was the only one in the truck, so only the Raptor heard me laugh loudly and squeal whenever it happened. It was an amazing ride, altogether too brief, and left me wanting more. And isn’t that what a substantial, powerful and playful summer lover should do?

Or is that the Ford F-150 Tremor Rocks and the Platinum Kicks Butt? It’s really hard to say.

I had more of a hard time deciding what the title of this story should be compared to the magical experience I had driving a few versions of the 2024 Ford F-150. First, there was the Platinum series, which starts at $73,735, and then came the F-150 Tremor series, which starts at $64,150.

The location was perfect too, in the beautiful Southern California desert. Forest, desert, and lots and lots of highway. What I discovered was that it’s all about the balance. Not just when testing the capabilities of trucks, but with the pickup itself. The Ford F-150 offers a gorgeous array of choices, ones that can easily take you over rocks and into a new adventure you never even imagined, while sitting in a luxurious position.

I’m not sure that there is a more versatile and capable truck out there that could surpass this one. Every luxury you enjoy in your car can be found in these trucks, and then some. And some luxuries you may not have even experienced yet.

Ford has made some key improvements in the 2024 F-150 to elevate the artful combination of driving and pursuit of off-road adventure, and I’m so pleased to tell you all about it.

That F-150 PowerBoost Hybrid Engine

Let’s refresh our memory and talk about what’s under the hood of the 2024 Ford F–150 Platinum that I tested. It’s a 3.5L PowerBoost Hybrid engine with 430 hp, and it cranks the torque up to 570 lb.-ft. The hybrid engine has proven to be quite popular, to the point that Ford is dedicated to an uptick in production of this engine for the 2024 model year – from 10% of all trucks to 21%. And this engine is fully capable. In other words, this engine provides a responsive and smooth acceleration on entrance ramps, while saving you a bit more on gas too. It can also outhaul most everything else, with a max towing capacity of 11,200 lbs.

If you’re dead serious about towing, choosing this truck with the available 3.5L EcoBoost V6 ups your maximum available towing to 13,500 lbs, so bring all the things. Ford makes it easier too, with the Pro Trailer Hitch Assist. This is one of the things I find extremely convenient about this truck. It uses AI to automatically back up and align the hitch and trailer. And it all happens with one knob on the dashboard. No more “a little to the left, a little to the right” when it comes time to add your precious cargo.

The Art of the Tailgate

I wasn’t planning to lead with this feature. I had planned to work up to my favorite feature on the truck, but I can’t hold back. The Pro Access Tailgate is my favorite new feature on the Ford F-150, and here’s why: increased inclusivity.

The swing gate can open as little as 37° or as wide as 100°, and you can open it with one hand. If you open the gate for quick access at the first angle, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to see how much reach you have deeper into the truck bed.

This is a wondrous feature for those of us with shorter limbs or limited range of mobility. It’s nice to know that you can open the tailgate and grab something you might need without disturbing the trailer hitch.

At the presentation, I was told that 75% of Ford owners tow something, so it’s pretty clear to me that Ford listens to their customers and focuses on human-centered design improvements when it comes time to upgrade. As a potential new buyer, I appreciate that.

The Proof is in the Tech

Ford has upped the ante regarding update and connectivity facilitation, so they’ve put a 5G LTE modem on board. Along with that, there’s ProPower available onboard, which consists of a 2.4kW or 7.2kW battery that will provide exportable power. Enough power to operate a shop for 85 hours. For many F-150 owners, this means being able to run your shop remotely, but for some of us without those requirements, having an extraordinary tailgate party sounds like fun.

As we previously reported, the 2024 Ford F-150 will also be connected to Ford Stolen Vehicle Services, which can help locate your truck if you need help recovering it.

This truck has never been safer either, as there are 10 standard driver-assist features in the F-150 now. These include:

  • Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Blind Spot Information System
  • Cross Traffic Alert
  • Lane-Keeping System
  • Rear View Camera
  • Auto High Beams
  • Reverse Sensing System
  • Reverse Brake Assist
  • Post-Collision Braking
  • Auto On/Off Headlamps

Finally, the 12” multimedia touchscreen is now standard on all models, complementing the 12” driver info panel. A bright and clear head-up display is available that gives information for all modes, including BlueCruise 1.2, which I tried firsthand.

No Hands and No Crashes on the Freeway

My driving partner and I had a delightful stretch of the California interstate to drive on to test the Ford BlueCruise 1.2. This current Level 2 version of their hands-free highway driving assistant is the most up-to-date, and it includes new features like lane change assist and in-lane repositioning when the truck senses that somebody’s right on the line next to you.

I did enjoy watching the truck show off that feature when a big 18-wheeler appeared to drift over toward me. It wasn’t easy to keep my hands off the wheel, but I did. And I’m old-school. This type of option did not exist when I learned to drive back when the dinosaurs still roamed the earth, so I’m pretty proud of myself.

Sitting behind the wheel, letting the car work its way down the highway, I marveled at the ease of modern-day driving. It seems like more and more niceties are contributing to a more relaxing experience, even if it’s at rush hour on a Monday.

The Ford F-150 Tremor Made Me Forget the Highway

After marveling at all the new technology on the highway, Ford wanted us to experience their trucks on the Burns Canyon Trail. This trail took us on a lush journey through the San Bernardino National Forest. We were treated to a dense trail filled with pine and Joshua trees as we climbed and then descended over a variety of terrain, which was technically moderate. We ventured through loose rocks, deep ruts, hairpin turns, tight spaces bookended by big boulders, and a lot of dust.

The Ford F–150 Tremor was our sturdy companion. And sturdy is an understatement. It has presence. It’s a beefy ride which almost makes it seem like this truck is too easy to drive. Sitting on 33” all-terrain tires gave us additional ground clearance and a wider stance made it easy to keep a grip on the assorted terrain.

How Did The Ford F-150 Tremor Do on the Trail?

The Ford F-150 Tremor I drove had a 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine with 400 hp and 500 lb.-ft. of torque. We had multiple steep hills to climb, and I had no doubt that this truck would reach the destination summit, which it did easily.

This truck makes it easy to go off-roading too. It has a plethora of technical features, including:

  • Trail Control with One-Pedal Drive
  • Trail Turn Assist
  • Tremor-specific front and rear springs and shocks
  • An electronic locking rear differential
  • Special control arms and front knuckles uniquely designed for the Tremor

Additionally, some beautiful hot orange graphics on the Tremor exterior carry over into the interior, which has tactile surface materials that remind me of dark denim, with happy orange stitching, dashboard accents and embroidered badging on the seats. There is an available modular bumper that aftermarket accessories can easily be added to as well. An adventurous tone is set with the distinctive Tremor grille, with orange accents that play right into the turn signal lights, and very cool patterned running boards that are unique to this truck.

How much does the Ford F-150 Cost?

Who is the Ford F-150 Tremor For?

The Ford F-150 certainly has a wide appeal since it’s the only full-size pickup truck to offer gas, full hybrid, and all-electric powertrain options to customers. The Ford F-150 Tremor is the perfect truck for people who wish to incorporate off-roading as part of their lifestyle. Outdoor aficionados and petite people might be thrilled with the Pro Access Tailgate because the truck bed just got a whole lot easier to access. And, tech-oriented folks will appreciate the enhanced connectivity and precision of the Trail Control one-pedal driving, the thrill of circling a campfire using the Trail Turn Assist, or the excellent camera system to see how close they are to the edge of the path.

The Platinum series I drove on pavement made me feel so elegant, and the Tremor series I drove off-road was so easy to drive. I really do believe the value you get for the dollar will translate into a smile on your face every time you take this thing out, whether going for a fabulous dinner in the city or heading deep into the forest for some much-needed alignment with nature. Smiles are valuable currency.

I cannot emphasize how much fun I had driving, feeling relaxed and secure in every aspect in these trucks. We live in an era of modern, comprehensive technology. Isn’t it nice to know your truck behaves like a guardian and keeps you and your passengers comfortable on any adventure, no matter the details? I’d say a truck like that kicks some serious butt.

The Mazda CX-70: What This Car Is All About 

The CX-70 is essentially the CX-90 without the 3rd row, plus a few additions: 

  • The narrowed-down trim lineup is a bit more premium, with a higher starting price and more luxury details
  • 5 models are powered by an inline 6-cylinder turbo engine with a mild hybrid system that boosts power and performance with a small electric motor, noted by the “e-Skyactive G” badge on the rear liftgate
  • There are 3 versions—Turbo, Turbo S, and PHEV—and pricing starts at about $40K, a bit more than the CX-90, which offers more family-friendly features, including a lower entry-level price
  • There is slightly more cargo space and some nice under-floor storage

I spent half a day driving the Turbo S and then half a day driving the PHEV plug-in hybrid version and both just like the CX-90, are very nice, with solid performance and details that refine the experience. And I can appreciate the fact that the absence of a 3rd row is just as attractive as the addition of one: You get to pick the car that fits you best rather than making a compromise because it’s the best you can do.

Who The Mazda CX-70 is For

  • Drivers who need a sizable cargo space and appreciate smart storage under the cargo floor
  • Small families or singles who don’t need a 3rd row
  • Fur families who need room for a dog crate in the cargo area
  • Buyers who just like a full-size SUV 
  • Drivers who need all-wheel drive and tow capacity; this SUV can tow up to 5,000 lbs.
  • Buyers who love the power and style of Mazda

Three Engine Types to Choose From

The Mazda CX-70 comes in 3 engine types and two or three trims per type. There are two turbo lines and one plug-in electric hybrid. Keep in mind that Mazda’s turbo engines can use either premium or regular gas, but in order to get the horsepower quoted here, which Mazda touts, premium is required. Using regular octane gas is fine, but you’ll get about 25 HP less than the numbers here (and, if you ask me, you won’t feel the difference unless you do a lot of performance driving and are really sensitive to power levels).  

Here’s how they break down: 

The 6-cylinder models have a mild hybrid system that uses a large battery to operate a small electric motor to boost performance and fuel economy. They offer two power levels, both estimated to get about 25 MPG: 

  • Turbo, which generates 280 hp, comes in Preferred ($40,445), Premium ($45,900), and Premium + ($48,900) trims; 
  • Turbo S, which generates 340 hp, comes in Premium ($52,450) and Turbo S Premium + ($55,950) 

Then, the Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle, or PHEV, has a 17 kWh battery that generates 323 HP and delivers an all-electric range of about 39 miles. There are two choices: PHEV Premium ($54,400) and PHEV Premium + ($57,450)

Driving the Turbo S

The first day of my test drive I spent the afternoon in a Turbo S model, a nicely appointed, leather-upholstered model, and was reminded of all the things to like about the CX-90: the multimedia system that is dial controlled, the elegant wood and aluminum trim, the ‘zen’ of Mazda’s nicely edited interiors.

The Turbo S has three drive modes: Sport, Normal, and Off-Road which lets you put the standard AWD to work when you need it.

Driving the PHEV

On the second day, I challenged the PHEV to see how far I could drive on electric power. And it was nice. I started out with 39 miles of range, which I could see by clicking “information” on the multimedia screen and then looking at the battery details. From there, I selected EV mode in the drive mode menu; the driver display glowed in blue and away I went in lovely silence. 

I headed out for my morning ritual of a Starbucks stop for a latte and to see how this large SUV handled in a tight parking lot. It was great. Not only does it handle more like a car than a truck on the highway and local roads, but it was easy to park. I really appreciated the surround-view camera that allowed me to see all sides of the car, and the forward camera that shows you what you don’t see from the driver’s seat. 

I picked up my coffee, restarted the car, and went on my way, soon realizing that I was no longer in EV mode; I selected it on the drive selector again. Once I did I was easily back in EV mode. 

In all, the system seemed to work as expected, giving me about the number of electric miles it reported on the range when I started. Of course it’s what you expect, but not always what you get.

I headed up the Palms to Pines highway and soon depleted the electric range. At that point, the hybrid engine kicked in with all the power I needed to climb the hills. It was still quiet, though not as quiet as the electric system, but it was also powerful, giving me confidence through the twisty turns and steep rise of the highway. And it was fun.

How Kids Car Seats Fit 

Of course this car is perfect for those who don’t need multiple car seats, but it’s also ideal for families who have 3 kids in car seats and want them all within arms reach on a rear bench seat. And, because all the seats will be filled with car seats, a 3rd row is pretty useless. 

The CX-70 could be ideal. First, the Mazda CX-70’s rear seats are adjustable forward and back; you can slide them forward so they are closer to the front seat or adjust them for more leg room. 

Then, they should fit 3 car seats across the bench. I measured the rear seats and found the outboard seats are 19” wide and the middle seat is about 12” wide, meaning three car seats should easily fit across the bench. 

Measuring seat back to seat back, with the front seat set for my driving position (I’m 5’8”) I measured 32.5.” That is more than enough room for a rear-facing child car seat. It’s likely that if the driver isn’t taller than 6’, a second rear-facing car seat would fit behind the driver as well. And, a slim seat will fit in the middle seat. Good news for families with two or three kids in car seats.

Why Buy This and Not That?

The Mazda CX-90 is a winner for certain. The interior details are thoughtful, the materials are beautiful and the overall feeling is very premium. But in the CX-70 it gets just a bit better for buyers who want more refinement in the absence of that one thing that tilts the car toward family: a 3rd row. 

Even so, it’s still great for families who only want the rear seat or for rear passengers who want to stretch out. There’s a large space for the pups to rest (or to haul a dog crate), and there’s plenty of cargo space for your bags and hide-away things. 

Which is what makes it so nice: you can have your large SUV and not be pigeonholed into something that car carpool. It’s the power, and delight, of being able to say ‘No.’

Silence is golden. Listen, I know I sound like my mother right now, but let’s embrace it. As a mom to a loud-mouthed, I mean talkative, middle schooler, I finally understand what she meant by that.

The 2024 Nissan Rogue Platinum AWD, which starts at $40,200, received a gorgeous exterior refresh, new interior additions, and technology upgrades that make the daily commute anything but a grind. After driving the 2024 Nissan Rogue Platinum AWD for a week, I was pleasantly surprised at how quiet this SUV is. Sure, I was only driving solo a few times, but I relished those moments.

The 2024 Nissan Rogue has a powerful 12-valve turbocharged engine, so one would think it would rev up with some noise. Instead, the engine is quiet, and the inside of the car is soundproof against the noise of the road. With the panoramic sunroof open, I could enjoy the sunshine, warm breeze, and my thoughts without interruptions. A mom could get used to this.

The New Nissan Altima Exterior is Refreshing

Bold colors, grippy wheels, Nissan’s V-motion grille, inner taillights, and satin-finish exterior badges are the new upgrades and changes that happened during the Rogue’s 2024 makeover. The grille extends towards the headlights for a more put-together look, and I like it.

Along with the refresh, the Rogue still has its standard features that make this SUV a winner. The roof rails, multi-level headlights, and 19-inch aluminum alloy wheels give it a very modern and sporty appearance.

This small SUV is a looker, and the bright, two-toned, deep ocean blue metallic and super black paint colors will turn heads.

Ohhh, That Interior

The chestnut brown quilted leather upholstery gives this SUV a luxurious look without breaking the bank. The seats are comfortable and offer a heating option, making it perfect for road trips and everyday driving.

Once you sit in the Rogue, you might be pleasantly surprised at how soft and comfortable the leather seats are. Called Zero Gravity seats, they are designed to support you effortlessly, and it’s almost as if they mold to your body, which makes a long car ride a breeze.

The 12.3-inch touch-screen display (much larger than the previous 9-inch model) and the 12.3-inch digital dashboard are both easy to navigate. Combined with the prominent 10.8-inch head-up display, drivers can focus on the road and not be distracted by trying to figure out the technology.

A large wireless charging pad is located in the front center console. I couldn’t believe it when I discovered it would charge my phone, even though the case had a pop socket. I’ve noticed that in other cars, the charging pad typically does not work with that type of case. It’s a simple feature, but one that should be noted and much appreciated.

Along with the wireless charging pad, there are also 2 USB-C ports in the front seat and the rear middle console.

Google (and Cargo Space) to the Rescue

The 2024 Rogue is the first Nissan to be equipped with built-in Google Assistant, Maps, and Play+. This new feature is available in the Rogue SL and Platinum trims. Google Assistant allows drivers to navigate maps, call or voice text, and listen to music without having to pair or plug in a phone.

iPhone and Android users can still use Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Rogue allows drivers to choose the connectivity options they prefer.

A middle open console has space for a small bag or purse, which is handy when you have a car full of people.

What impressed me was the Divide-N-Hide cargo floor. The Rogue is equipped with movable floorboards in the cargo space that can be rearranged in a stacking format to separate the trunk space. This adds additional storage space and can hide any bags or other items. There is also a side cubby hole that is perfect for a gallon of milk or other bottles. No more milk rolling around and destroying the other groceries.

Swaddled in Safety

While I enjoy getting the scoop on all the middle school drama from my son, we can all agree that the non-stop chatter can be a distraction at times. But with the blind spot warnings, traffic alerts, and collision warnings the Nissan Rogue is equipped with, I was able to hear who received a detention on Monday all while backing up in the school parking lot with kids running around. That is a feat in itself!

What this Car Costs, and Who It’s For

The Nissan Rogue is for singles, couples, or small families, those who want good gas mileage, and those who seek an SUV that gives a lot of comfort and value at an affordable price.

Starting at $40,200, the 2024 Nissan Rogue Platinum AWD offers 201 horsepower, 225 lb-ft of torque with a towing capacity of 1,500 pounds and averages 31 MPG.

The Rogue I drove is priced at $45,145 with added features like external ground lighting, illuminated kickplates, heated rear seats, and a hands-free power liftgate. That’s a whole lot of features and safety for my family for the price. Add just a skinch of mom time with only the sound of wind and engine in my ears, and I’d say it’s a delightful car to spend time in when you’re not driving the kids around too.

New Tech and Design That Feels Familiar and Classic

The redesign of the Lexus GX was big news. This popular bucket-list SUV needed a makeover; while the exterior kept up with the Lexus design journey, the interior continued to feel clunky and old school, from oversized interior components and a gear shifter to an outdated multimedia system. 

But what it did so spectacularly was off-road and tow in the posh surrounds of leather seats and a rugged but refined cabin. 

The nature of this SUV hasn’t changed; it’s simply gotten better with the 2024 model. 

The biggest change is in the front seat. Lexus designers were able to increase visibility by flattening the entire dash and lowering it, setting the multimedia screen and driver display a bit lower. The result is a wider, more commanding view of the road. Head up display (a $900 option ) in our test model was a great addition, keeping my eyes on the road without interruption. 

The center console and climate controls under the multimedia screen were also streamlined with a more elegant look and feel. The entire console feels designed rather than assembled. 

But it still maintains the classic feel: the gear selector is still a lever that fits nicely in your hand; no push buttons here. Four wheel drive controls sit just below the gear shifter, and drive mode controls are at your fingertips on an angled panel. The climate control panel is a static bar on the multimedia screen so they are always easy to find, and radio volume and temperature controls are dials so they can be quickly accessed.

The Updated Multimedia System Is a Game Changer

The GX is among the last of redesigned Lexus models to get this new system, housed in a 14” touchscreen, but buyers will be grateful. It features a new look and function, including “Hey Lexus” voice activation and multitudes of vehicle settings that let you customize things like ambient lighting, head up display, driver assist features, voice-activated assistance and more.

The updated system also includes navigation and a 3 year trial of Lexus Drive Connect, a premium navigation system that updates and stores maps and destinations. Lexus parent company Toyota designed this system for off-grid travelers so they’ll always have the most updated maps even when there is no cell service. 

Additionally, the system offers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a panoramic HD camera system in all but the base model.

Lexus GX 550 Overtrail Edition: A Special Treat for Off-Roaders 

Lexus GX owners who trail ride and off-road are a special tribe and Lexus put a lot of thought into how these customers use their GXs. The Overtrail comes equipped with a number of features that will optimize time on the trail, including leatherette seats, adaptive suspension, locking rear differential, crawl control, downhill descent mode, multi terrain drive mode and all terrain tires. All GX 550s come with a trailer hitch to tow up to 9,000 lbs. Then, the Overtrail model is designed for customization; you can add enhanced roof rails, a rooftop box, ladders, fog lights and more to accommodate your overlanding needs. 

To make room for your gear, this model does not come with a 3rd row, though all the other models have the option. The cargo area has about 40 cubic feet of space, plenty of room for luggage and gear. And, to make room in your budget for all that gear and customization, it’s comparatively well priced at $69,250, just $5K over the base model

Yes, There are 3 Rows For Seven Passengers — Standard 

All models other than the Overtrail come with a 3rd row and a center row bench seat. And all but the base model offer second row captains chairs as a $440 option. This is great for families who need 3 car seats in the center row, but with caveats: Center row seats fold and flip for 3rd row access, so families who need the 3rd row every day may want to opt for captains chairs instead.

I did note during my test drive, however, that the middle seat in the center row bench is really only suited for small passengers, perhaps in a car seat or booster. The center console covers part of the transmission tunnel, leaving no foot space for a middle seat passenger.

How Kids Car Seats Fit 

There is great news here: First, the center row bench is large and wide. There’s plenty of legroom and space for rear-facing kids car seats. There are two full LATCH sets, and lower anchors are covered by an elegant leather (or leatherette) panel with a velcro closure. Outboard seats are 19” deep and 22” wide; the middle seat is 14” wide. Overall, most car seats should fit nicely and the bench should easily fit 3 seats across. 

One or two rear-facing car seats should fit, too: my seat back-to-seat back measurements came to 32” behind the driver’s seat when it was set for my height, which is 5’8.” So a rear facing seat should fit easily behind the passenger’s seat and possibly in the middle seat. I didn’t get a chance to test the 3-row model, which has about 10 cubic feet behind the 3rd row, but hope to and will report back when I do.

The Lexus GX 550 Knows What It Is and Who It Is For

It’s not trying to be everything for everyone. There are other cars for that—Lexus even makes a few. The GX 550 is for the off-roading family, even small ones, who need real 4 wheel drive and features that can support it, and who want top notch luxury for the long haul. Yes, it’s expensive but it’s an investment, just like those pearls or Chanel bag, that will pay off in spades with the experiences it will introduce you to.

I have a soft spot for luxurious and sporty cars—cars that can carry clients by day and handle corners in the mountains by night. I have yet to love any such car as much as I loved the 2024 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio.

In a scene that has stayed with me for years, one of my favorite television presenters, Jeremy Clarkson of Top Gear, drove his test Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio directly to the Alfa Romeo dealership, where he purchased one for himself. And after driving the car myself, I can see why.

The Sexy Exterior of the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio Gleams

Adorned in an eye-catching metallic green, the sleek exterior of the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, which starts at about $83K and carries a turbo V6 engine that generates 505 HP, draws stares as it cruises down the road. The iconic triangle-shaped Alfa Romeo grille is surrounded by aggressive headlights with sporty daytime running lights. Large intakes cover the bottom half of the bumper, funneling air toward the intercoolers for the twin turbos.

The Quadrifoglio, thoughtfully crafted by Alfa Romeo’s performance department, features an active front splitter at the base of the front bumper, generating downforce at higher speeds for increased handling. Along with its sportiness, the Quadrifoglio features multiple carbon fiber components for decreased weight, both visible and not.

The vehicle I tested had the optional exposed carbon fiber roof, as well as the standard carbon fiber front splitter and rear spoiler, visible to the average passer-by, and a carbon fiber hood and driveshaft, also standard. The weight-reducing features and careful planning of the drivetrain give the Giulia an almost-perfect 50/50 weight distribution, meaning almost exactly half the weight of the car sits over the front wheels and half over the rear. This results in an exceptionally well-handling sedan.

Bring on the Exhaust Noise

The suspension on the Quadrifoglio is adaptive, adjusting the stiffness depending on the drive mode. In sportier drive modes, the suspension stiffens, giving more exact handling, while in comfort drive mode, the suspension softens, giving a luxurious, comfortable ride. The 505-horsepower twin-turbocharged V-6 engine, which nearly doubles the standard model’s 280 HP, is derived from a Ferrari engine, so yes, it sounds incredible. In normal drive modes, the active exhaust is closed, creating a quiet purr that grows to a low growl on heavy acceleration. In Sport and Race modes, though, the exhaust opens, and the car’s entire attitude changes and it roars to life as it accelerates from 0-60 in just 3.8 seconds.

Did I Mention That it’s Fast?

And the Quadrifoglio is just darn quick. There is no other word for it. Thanks to the aluminum engine block, carbon fiber bits, and other weight savings, the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio weighs less than most other vehicles in its class. It may not be as quick off the line (and therefore in a 0-60 mph test) as the heavier 550-horsepower Mercedes Benz SL63 AMG, thanks to the AMG’s all-wheel-drive drivetrain, compared to the Alfa’s rear-wheel drive drivetrain, but it accelerates quicker from a roll and has a higher top speed at 191 miles per hour (this may come as a surprise, but I did not test this). This top speed makes it one of the fastest five-seater vehicles in production today.

In case the peppy driving in sport mode isn’t enough to remind you that this car is just a Ferrari in disguise, the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio is fitted with what I consider to be a true race mode. As a forewarning, do not turn on race mode in the rain, and be careful if you turn it on when driving on the streets. Race mode shortens the throttle response, steering response, and shift time to make the car more responsive and also turns off traction control to give you full mechanical control of the car. The Giulia really transforms into a sporty beast.

The Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio Has a Racy Interior

The interior also features a wireless charging pad, Harman Kardon premium audio, and 3D navigation. The carbon fiber is carried into the interior, as well, with carbon fiber trim on the dash, center console, and doors. The steering wheel has sporty grips and the red start/stop button, located under the left spoke of the steering wheel, reminds you that this sedan is a cousin of Ferrari.

If you ask the internet, the biggest drawback to the Alfa Romeo is the reliability. While I do not have firsthand experience with the reliability of this vehicle in general, I always take comments on reliability lightly. No, the Alfa Romeo surely won’t run like a Toyota, which seem to be able to run their whole life without even an oil change. As with other higher-maintenance luxury cars, I am sure the Alfa will require more attention to the maintenance intervals and will likely be more expensive to maintain.

That being said, modern cars are much more reliable than cars were, even just 20 years ago. Even the least “reliable” modern cars seem to survive to 100,000 miles and beyond. With some preventative maintenance and a careful eye, I feel that any car can be kept up and live a very long life.

How did it Feel Behind the Wheel?

Driving the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio is nothing short of invigorating. The eight-speed transmission can be fully controlled by paddles on the steering wheel (and the exhaust makes great noises on downshifts), allowing full control of the car.

Somehow, the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio makes commuting FUN. Starting at $83,570 ($86,030 for the Carbon edition with additional carbon fiber accents) and $90,865 as tested, I expected the Quadrifoglio to be an exciting drive, but even with high expectations, it impressed me.

From Newcomer to Honored Host, the Transition of Genesis

Genesis, which emerged in 2015 as the first Korean luxury automobile to enter the US market, first exercised “son-nim” by offering customers an online shopping concierge and a white-glove sales valet to deliver a test drive or build and deliver a Genesis model to a buyer’s home.

Today, the idea of hospitality is more personal, with 35 standalone Genesis showrooms across the US, and Genesis House in New York City, which welcomes guests to experience the its distinctly Korean culture.

The 2025 model boasts some updates, from more jewel-like headlights to a “mood curator” that features a fragrance diffuser hidden in the glove box, to a biometric starter that can you can personalize with your fingerprint, making the Genesis GV80 more welcoming and delightful than ever.

The GV80‘s Engine Options Treat You Like a VIP, Too

For me, everything was new, as this was my first experience in a Genesis. And it was rewarding. While the 2025 model had a makeover (keep reading for more on that) the two available powertrains remain the same as in the current 2024 models—a 2.5L inline turbo 4 cylinder that generates 300 HP and a 3.5L V-6 Twin Turbo (which we drove) that generates 375 HP. And that’s a good thing.

My favorite place is always the driver’s seat, and there I felt completely at ease driving the GV80 – the handling, turning, acceleration, braking, and parking left nothing to be desired. Just as one might expect with Korean hospitality, the GV80 was attentive and ready to gently assist without my having to ask.

Subtle New Changes Elevate the Genesis GV80

What has changed, ever so subtly, are a few exterior details that visually signal a bespoke, elevated experience. There’s nothing shallow here, the exterior design elements of the GV80 are deep, rich, and purposeful

The first visual that embodied the spirit of Genesis is the new color added for 2025, Storr Green. Inspired by the Scottish greens of the Isle of Skye, this distinctive new paint choice is available in both glossy and matte finishes. When I saw it, I was really drawn in by notes of mist-laden moss against the earthy cliffs, and sensed the fresh salty air of the Hebrides. I noticed subtle changes in color as the sky shifted from grey and overcast to crisp and sunny, just like the Scottish landscape. I won’t deny that for a moment, the color made my mouth water for an aged single malt whiskey.

All of the colors that Genesis selected are inspired by travel destinations and evoke nostalgia or wanderlust – Capri Blue of the Mediterranean island, Uyani White of the Bolivian Salt flats. Naturally, the entire palette resonates with the traveler’s spirit and had me wistful to re-visit or discover beautiful far-flung destinations.

On every paint color the exterior details are exquisite; the double mesh grille adds a bold touch of class, with larger air vents and distinctive micro lens array of headlamps. The Genesis badge now rests flush in the hood because elegance doesn’t need to be show-y. The rear design accentuates width, with a cleverly hidden muffler disguised as a “V” shaped design element. And the 22” wheels (on the Prestige trim we drove) are eye-catching, both while parked and in motion.

“Son-nim” Inside The Gv80, Where Every Seat Is a Seat Of Honor

When I arrived for my test drive I was transferred to the venue in a truly beautiful and distinctively luxurious GV80. My first experience in the 2025 model was that of a backseat passenger. The driver could have taken me anywhere, clear across Texas for all I cared. I was delightfully comfortable in a car that literally treated me as an honored guest when I sat down, and the driver didn’t have to lift a finger. Spacious legroom? Check. A place for my water bottle? Check. A USB port to charge my phone? Check. A sunshade for my passenger window? Check. How about a fold-down vanity mirror for passengers in the second row? Check.

With the push of a button I perfected the angle of my seat back recline so I that could enjoy the view through the panoramic sunroof, or even doze off if I so desired. Alas, just as I was about to drift into slumber, we’d arrived. That short drive was just a palette-teaser, an hors-douevre served at the beginning of a full course Michelin-starred meal that is the drive experience inside the cabin of the Genesis GV80. 

When my drive partner and I set off for our drive experience the following morning, I rode in the passenger’s seat for the first portion, again feeling like I had taken the seat of honor. Like the driver, I also had a heated/ventilated power seat with 4-way lumbar support, and individual climate controls at my fingertips.

As we meandered the single lane highways outside of Fort Worth, all of a sudden my drive partner swerved slightly and began apologizing profusely for not seeing the giant potholes in the road…what potholes? We rolled right over them and felt nay so much as a slight rumble. I was enjoying the passenger view out the window – had she not said anything, I’d have been none the wiser. We agreed we could relax about road conditions and simply allow the GV80’s Son-Nim hospitality treat us to a pleasant and comfortable journey, wherever the road took us.

Driving: The Genesis GV80’s Smart Cruise Control Reflects True Hospitality

As nice as the passenger’s seat is, there’s no place I’m happier than in the driver’s seat. With the 12” head up display, being in command was effortless.

This was most apparent and appreciated when I tested out my trust issues with the Genesis adaptive cruise control system, particularly Highway Driving Assist, which is their hands free driving system. I would normally reserve cruise control for straight freeway driving, but we were driving on winding rural highways. Using the functions on the steering wheel, which are easy to initiate by thumb, I reached a comfortable speed and engaged adaptive cruise control.

The system also has speed limit assist, which monitors the speed limit on the road. Lane follow and lane keep assist read the road and kept me in my lane, even on a single lane highway, and even on a curving highway. I could rest my legs and relax my hands while the GV80 quietly took over and hosted my drive.

Still, I had to maintain control of the car. The Driver and Forward Attention Warning system kept me from getting distracted looking at scenery; all that was required was my attention on the road ahead, and the GV80 did the rest. While initially I was nervous to relinquish control, I actually found that my stress was reduced and I could rely on the GV80 to keep me safe on the road. When I arrived at our destination, I let the GV80 park itself with Remote Smart Parking Assist, like a built in valet, because that last bit of stress is the last thing I want after a long drive.

The Star Attraction Is Not Out The Window, It’s In The Cabin Of The Gv80

The elegant and purposeful technology enhancements in the 2025 GV80 served to assist, rather than distract from, the drive experience. The most stunning design element boldly takes center stage sweeping across the dash – an impressive 27-inch widescreen HD display. A digital display rests in front of the driver, with navigation, audio, comfort and settings menu spanning across the center console, demanding attention and admiration. Unlike other brands where you have to upgrade for such a stunning centerpiece, this display is standard in every Genesis GV80 model.

Yes, it functions as a touchscreen, but that doesn’t mean you’ll be wiping smudgy fingerprints off after every drive. The magic happens with a sophisticated crystal-topped dial in the center console, at the driver’s fingertips, to move through the screens, toggle and select settings. Additionally, there are in-dash push button options, and a touch type dual zone climate control panel, giving you options. I quickly adapted to using the dial and loved the intuitive ease with which I was able to scroll through the menus.

Mood Curation For Those Ever-changing Moods On The Road

The GV80’s attentiveness to emotion and sense is served up in a Mood Curator. Four different mood settings are built in to create an ambience in the cabin, with lighting, sound, scent, and even touch! 

  • Vitalty is energizing with colorful lighting and fast beat  music that makes you feel ready to go; 
  • Delight was my happy place, with bright tone lights and upbeat music that had me smiling and dancing in my seat;
  • For a more calming atmosphere, Care softens the lighting and music, and even adds a gentle massage to the driver, easing away all stress; 
  • Comfort also incorporates massage, with relaxing music and lighting, and is great for going the distance. 

I would be remiss not to mention the audio system behind the sound: the Bang & Olufsen premium 18 speaker surround sound, with intuitive touch base tone control and elegantly designed speakers, lending an even more refined feel and sound to the cabin of the GV80.

Luxury is “Standard” in the 2025 Genesis GV80

I have never seen a more comprehensive list of inclusions for the standard base model, but that’s in line with “Son-Nim” and Genesis anticipating your every need. To share all  the standard inclusions here would be exhaustive, so I’ve picked out my personal highlights:

Trims and Pricing for the 2025 GV80

  • The GV80 Standard trim starts at $57,800 for the 2.5T AWD, and also includes a full suite of safety features, wireless Apple Car Play and Android Auto, leatherette seating, Mood Curator, digital phone-as-key and 19” wheels
  • The Advanced model starts at $65,600 (2.5T) and $73,800 (3.5T) abd adds leather seating, surround view mirror, and Bang & Olufsen Premium Audio, panoramic sunroof, power folding 3rd row is available only in this trim for the 3.5T.
  • The Prestige 2.5T model starts at $70,450 adds 22” wheels, 3-zone climate control, Ergo Motion Seats;  
  • The Prestige 3.5T model starts at $79,000 and adds Nappa leather seating with heated and ventilated rear seats, and a power second row.

As a “Son-Nim” Guest of Honor, the Honor Was Truly Mine

It was as much an honor to drive the Genesis GV80 as it was to be the honored guest in the passenger’s seat or being chauffeured. The elevated environment of the exquisitely designed cabin make you feel like royalty, and that about says it all. I’ve tried my best to put my “Son-Nim” into words, but you may just have to experience it for yourself. Genesis is more than a brand. It’s a culture, it’s an attitude. And it was an honor to drive.

In September of 2022, after five years of declining health following surgery to remove a blood clot, my grandmother was taken from her home for the final time to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with dementia. From that point on, she has lived in a nursing home minutes away from what was her home.

On the last weekend of October 2022, I moved into the house my mom once shared with her mom. I received help with the move in the form of the 2021 Honda Ridgeline Sport. The midsize truck handled the move well, though, much like my grandmother, it needed professional attention via a tow to the nearest Honda dealership. Unlike the dementia diagnosis she received, the Ridgeline’s issues were easier to resolve by replacing its dead battery.

Fast-forward to April 2024. My grandmother instructed Mom and me to give away everything in her house that belonged to her. She happens to have a lot of belongings that either need to be donated, recycled, trashed, or sold. To handle all of this, a 2024 Honda Ridgeline TrailSport helped with the start of this process.

Who Is the Honda Ridgeline TrailSport For?

One of four trim levels of the 2024 Honda Ridgeline, the TrailSport – which replaces the RTL-E trim level for 2024 – is aimed at tackling tougher roads and trails. Yet, there are many consumers who would appreciate what this midsize truck offers, including:

  • Honda and Acura owners looking to keep their garages and driveways Honda/Acura-Only zones
  • Those seeking a truck that isn’t the usual body-on-frame rig most trucks are
  • Those wanting a truck that can do it all and then some

The More Things Change, The More They Stay the Same

For the 2020 model year, the trim levels were cut from seven to four, Honda’s own six-speed automatic was replaced by a nine-speed automatic, and the Honda Sensing suite was made standard across the entire range along with an 8-inch touchscreen. The following model year, the Ridgeline received a facelift front to back, as well as the Honda Performance Development Package for extra rugged points, and the entire range went all-wheel-drive-only.

No matter which of the four trim levels—Sport, RTL, TrailSport, and Black Edition—you choose for 2024, the powertrain is the same across the board: a 3.5-liter V6 also found in the current Honda Odyssey and Passport. Total output from the V6 comes to 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. The TrailSport trim plants its power to the road and trail through all-terrain tires wrapped around 18-inch alloys.

Sensing the World Around You in 2024

The centerpiece of the 2024 Ridgeline lineup is the new tech occupying the dash. There’s a 9-inch touchscreen display equipped with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto plus HondaLink and – except for the Sport trim – SiriusXM; you also get a wireless charger on all trims. If you’re a fan of HD Radio, though, you’ll need to upgrade to the Black Edition to get that feature.

The driver also has the same 7-inch display found in the newest Honda models, featuring an analog speedometer on the right and a full TFT display on the left to tell the driver exactly what’s going on. To keep everyone safe on the road, the Honda Sensing suite offers features like collision mitigation, road departure mitigation, lane keeping and departure, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control.

The Trails Get Luxurious

The last time I had a Ridgeline, it had cloth seating for five, which my friends found comfortable on the trek to and from Martinsville Speedway in Ridgeway, Virginia, for the NASCAR Cup Series final playoff round before the championship the following week in Phoenix.

This time around, the new TrailSport trim toughs it out with a steel underbody plate to protect the oil pan and an off-road-tuned suspension to handle the toughest of the soft-roading trails. Inside, however, the seating is a mix of luxury and sporty, thanks to the orange TrailSport branding on the front headrests and orange stitching on the seats, steering wheel, and door panels. The seats are durable synthetic leather for that bit of luxury and durability this trim level requires. The front buckets are heated along with the steering wheel to keep the driver and lucky passenger warm, while the updated center console armrest can fit a full-size tablet. Finally, the all-season floor mats also feature the orange TrailSport logo, just to let everyone know they’re in for something special.

Memories Made in the Honda Ridgeline TrailSport

In late 2022, I moved into the house Mom shared with my grandmother to help Mom out. In early 2024, it was time to move as many of my grandmother’s belongings out of the house as I could. In both instances, a Honda Ridgeline was involved.

On one of those days of moving, the rains fell upon my Old Dominion home. Luckily, I could store some of the departing belongings inside the in-bed trunk, which is also lockable should truly precious belongings (or a couple bags of ice and a few 24-packs of beer) need extra security from would-be thieves. Alas, there wasn’t a tonneau cover to protect a few other belongings (clothes, in this case) from the rain; thus, they were put in a plastic bag and dumped into the clothing recycling bin near the Dollar Tree.

Speaking of lost belongings, more than a few of my grandmother’s items had to go to the waste disposal and recycling drop-off in Riner. So, all of it went into the bed of the Ridgeline, for the one-way trip south of my Old Dominion home. The flexible tailgate helped with the unloading of the trash and recycling, though it would be nice if the tailgate opened to the right in addition to dropping it down and swinging out to the left.

A Few Challenges in the Honda Ridgeline TrailSport

As far as the ride quality, it wasn’t too bad. The adaptive cruise control had one quirk, in that it couldn’t maintain the speed limit when going down or up hills; my 1997 Toyota RAV4’s non-adaptive cruise control is exactly the same in behavior. It also has a threshold of 25 mph before shutting off entirely; other vehicles I’ve reviewed turn off below 20 mph, but do remember the last speed it held so you can get back up to speed. The off-road tuned suspension didn’t get much of a workout off the paved path, but it did handle the mountain curves and two-lane highways of my usual final-day photoshoot loop, just like the 2021 Sport did on its round-trip to Martinsville Speedway on my moving weekend in 2022.

Just don’t ask how much it’ll cost to fill the Ridgeline’s 19.5-gallon fuel tank. Though rated at 18 mpg in town and 23 mpg on the highway for a combined 20 mpg, the best I could do was 17 mpg, as most of my driving was to and from Mom’s workplace in town just before dawn. It’s a good thing, then, that it takes regular instead of higher-grade fuels.

Parking the 210-inch-long midsize truck was also just as challenging now as it was in 2022 due to a lack of a front-facing camera and/or a 360-degree setup. Perhaps a lower hood for the next-gen Ridgeline could improve visibility, too.

What The Honda Ridgeline TrailSport Truck Costs

The 2024 Honda Ridgeline TrailSport is quite the midsize truck when compared to competition like the Ford Ranger, Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, Jeep Gladiator, Toyota Tacoma, and Nissan Frontier. As far as price goes, the made-in-Alabama Ridgeline falls into the pricier end of the midsize truck pool.

  • The TrailSport starts at $44,980, $46,830 as-tested with destination and optional Sonic Gray Pearl paint
  • The base Sport starts at $39,750
  • The next trim level up, the RTL, starts at $42,580
  • The top-tier Black Edition starts at $46,350

Memories Fade, but this Truck Will Not

I don’t have a lot of memories with my grandmother, as I was never close with her nor the majority of my family on both sides; living several states away in Kansas with only Mom while growing up didn’t help. And what memories I do have aren’t pleasant ones, especially those from the past few years as her health declined further and further, putting strain on the relationship my mom had with her until she was taken out of her home for the last time.

The 2024 Honda Ridgeline in all trims is built to take the strain of everyday tasks like towing trailers loaded with lawn equipment or hauling bags of mulch from the local lawn and care center. Or, in my case, removing the belongings and debris of my grandmother’s former life from what was once her home. When it comes to doing the right thing, whether it’s helping a friend move into a new home or helping Mom and me move forward with our lives, the Ridgeline is right there, ready to help.
