The 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV Is My Highly Personalized, 3-Row Bubble
Good things come to those who wait, and Mercedes fans do we have something good for you..
The 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV is the largest SUV in Mercedes-Benz’s electric lineup. Mercedes has already launched the EQB, and it’s got another special SUV coming soon. But let’s focus on the now, which is the EQS SUV.
We expect perfection from Mercedes, and they have delivered yet again.
The EQS SUV is nothing short of spectacular. To be in the vehicle is like moving through the world in your own personal space bubble. Part of this is because of the attention to every detail you can think of (and some you can’t). Another part of this is from some customizing of the lighting and mood, which can add a pinch of personality that is distinctively yours.
The seats are cushioned, but not squishy, and are heated and ventilated. They bolster a little bit and provide a nice support that is a perfect springboard for the customizable massage feature. Beautifully detailed leather has stitching and perforations that elevate the look. The center console and door sills have gorgeous inlaid wood, pretty brushed metal window switches and mirror adjusters. Just sitting still with the SUV off was a lovely experience.

But then I turned the EQS SUV on. It was great fun to get all my settings dialed in while parked in an underground garage. This helped me see all the ambient lighting in the EQS. Although I should have been in a hurry to depart, I was enjoying selecting my lighting from 64 different options, which ran along the doors, dash, floor, and even outlining the seat cushions. Simply beautiful.

A Little Razzle Dazzle for your Morning Commute Makes the Day Better
I drove the EQS 450+ that had the MBUX Hyperscreen upgrade. This dashboard setup is pretty dazzling. There are three screens, one as your instrument cluster, one as the central touchscreen multimedia system, and a third screen in front of the passenger seat. The passenger seat screen cannot be operated without someone sitting in the seat, by the way. But when they do, they can connect their phone, customize their environment, or even help with navigation. I think the Hyperscreen is at its finest when you’ve got an Energizing Comfort Mode selected.
Energizing Comfort modes are a theme that you can activate from the central multimedia screen. These preset modes adjust the lighting, sound, and even activate the fragrance diffuser to put you in the right mood. It’s so fun, and I would have it activated all the time, whether I needed to chill out or get amped up, or just be in a unique space.
There are environments like the ocean or the forest! The screen shows trees, the lights adjust to green, and the sound is foresty! I love it! Cleverly, there is a Power Nap mode. Think of it! You can activate Power Nap mode while you’re filling up your battery. You can recharge while your EQS does, too. Rear passengers can set their screens for these modes, as well.

Mercedes Understood the Assignment in this SUV
That’s right, the second row has screens as well. First and second-row passengers have priority, but with some adjusting, the third row is accommodating for shorter adults or kids. The EQS is on the same electric platform as the EQS sedan, so the interior is roomy.
However, because the people in the first two rows are so spoiled, the people in the third row might feel slighted. They do have cupholders and charging ports. Probably the biggest issue is that the third row does feel more closed in, which is not atypical of a third row. Be aware that passengers may prefer to rotate out of that third-row seat for long adventures.

It’s Gorgeous, but How Does it Drive?
Like most electric vehicles, the EQS has instant power and responsive braking. You can engage different drive modes like Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Sport+. The EQS SUV also has an “Individual” mode, and you can customize your driving preferences. Within those modes, you can adjust how grabby the brakes are. The brakes are regenerative (“recuperative” in Mercedes-Speak). You can adjust them based on how much recuperation you give back to the battery, or you can shift between these settings using the paddle shifters, like downshifting in gears. It’s quite fun.

Driver Assistance Systems Abound in the 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV
Adaptive cruise control, steering assist, braking assist with cross-traffic functions and lane-change assist are all there. You also get speed limit assist with traffic sign assist (one of my favorite functions ever), and blind spot assist with exit warning, so you won’t open your door into a cyclist or motorist coming up beside you.
Navigation systems will not only guide you visually and audibly, the EQS has an augmented reality feature. A screen pops up within your navigation map and shows your real-time driving from a camera in the front of the car. Arrows illustrate where your turn actually occurs, or which oncoming ramp is the one you want to take. It’s a lot to take in at first, but I imagine I’d get more comfortable with it over time.

Oh wait. She Off-Roads Too?
Well, no one is likely to do any really serious off-roading in their EQS SUV. But you can if you want to. There is an off-roading mode in the models that have 4-Matic. Are you going to be surprised to learn that you can access this mode from the screen inside the car, and your gearing will be adjusted for steep inclines, and/or loose sand or gravel? No, you won’t be surprised, but you will be dazzled! We actually took the EQS SUV off-roading on some ATV tracks in the mountains. There was all of the above, plus some tight, narrow turns.

Because the EQS SUV has rear steering, I could maneuver around trees, and hairpin turns were nothing to conquer. This rear-wheel steering gives the EQS SUV 4.5 degrees of extra radius. If you want more, you’ll be able to buy more to get 10 degrees total. It’s an over-the-air update if you decide to buy it. The future is here, people!

I Know, I Am Just Scratching the Surface
It’s a lot to take in on my first adventure with the Mercedes-Benz EQS. I was enamored with it, and though it has some features I’m not totally at ease with yet, I know I can either take some time to adjust or probably find the menu to turn it off. Who knew that the age of electrics would also be the age of ultimate personalization?
